Overview

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions is an anime that is sure to make you cringe. It’s about high school students, mainly one high school student, who has what is known as chunibyo, a temporary condition typically seen in middle school students where they believe themselves to be special in some way.

Chunibyo often results in the afflicted doing embarrassing things in public such as acting as if they are fighting off monsters with a sword which actually happens to be an umbrella.

This is basically a slice of life anime about high school students doing embarrassing things to the point where the viewer feels secondhand embarrassment. That said, it’s a fun watch and it has a very popular character in Rikka Takanashi, the female lead.

Characters

Yūta is the protagonist of the series and has overcome his chunibyo since entering high school. Unfortunately for him, his new neighbor, Rikka, discovered his chunibyo past and won’t let him get away from his past so easily.

Rikka is the main character of the show even though she isn’t the protagonist. She has a severe case of chunibyo, but she also has no intentions of giving up the chunibyo life even though she is well into high school.

Her signature eye patch is part of her persona and she believes that a cursed demon or something to that effect resides in her right eye. She has fairly strong physical and mental similarities to Mei Misaki from Another.

Dekomori is the next character and probably the most entertaining one. She’s still a middle school student and is in the prime of her chunibyo, especially when paired up with Rikka. She has a strong dislike of Shinka originally because she believes her to be a fake. Dekomori tends to use her twin tails as weapons.

Shinka is also part of the group with Yūta, Rikka, and Dekomori, although not by choice. She’s the most popular girl in school, but like Yūta, she has a dark chunibyo past she would rather forget. When she was in middle school she wrote an online book that was filled with her chunibyo thoughts and Dekomori is now in possession of a physical copy of it which could ruin her reputation if anyone else ever sees it.

Conclusion

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! is a pretty good romantic comedy even though it can be painful to watch at times. Overall I think it’s a solid 7/10 and that includes both seasons.

The second season introduces another main character I chose to skip over in the character section. She is another chunibyo character who is Yūta’s childhood friend from back when he was in his chunibyo prime. Rikka views her as a rival who is trying to steal Yūta away from her.
