Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Overview

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is an anime I haven’t seen in a few years at this point so I don’t really remember much of it other than that I liked it at the time. It’s almost like the bridge between most other fantasy shows and KonoSuba.

While I would say that some of the characters are precursors to those in KonoSuba, there are portions of the plot which resemble other fantasy shows. The dungeons in tower form with treasures awaiting at the top is reminiscent of Magi and the different dungeon floors reminds me of Sword Art Online.

In this anime, adventurers and support characters alike join familias which are essentially guilds led by a god or goddess. In the case of the Protagonist, Bell, the Hestia familia is the one he belongs to, but he is the only member other than the goddess herself.

The adventurers, and potentially the supporters, have levels and stats that go up after they defeat monsters in the dungeons. Typically the higher level players are in the larger familias and I believe level 6 is the highest that we know of in the anime.

Characters

Bell is your typical fantasy main character-kun, at least from what I remember. He is fairly well-rounded as far as stats and abilities go, and he’s oblivious to the romantic advances of his female compatriots. The one thing that isn’t standard about him is his hair which is white instead of the stereotypical main character-kun brown.

Hestia is a goddess and leader of her own familia. After failing to get anyone to join her familia, she finally recruits Bell. I view Hestia as a precursor to Aqua in KonoSuba in that she’s an apparent reject of a goddess since nobody would join her familia, but she isn’t quite on Aqua’s level of uselessness. Hestia is also the most popular character in the show by far.

Next we have Lilly and Welf. Lilly is a demi-human who basically serves as a pack animal for adventurers; carrying their supplies for them when they go into the dungeon. Welf on the other hand is a blacksmith who creates weapons and armor solely for Bell because he appreciates even low-level armor for what it is or something to that effect.

Finally we have Ais who is the primary love interest of Bell. Ais is the opposite of the damsel in distress. She is one of the strongest adventurers in her familia and she once saved Bell while in the dungeon, which is when he fell in love with her. Ais is also the protagonist of the spin-off series Sword Oratoria.

Conclusion

As I mentioned at the start, it’s been a few years since I last watched Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? so I don’t really remember most of the details. That said, I remember it was a good watch at the time and I ended up giving it a 7/10.

If you’re looking for a dungeon crawler anime that isn’t bad like Sword Art Online and also happens to have one of the most popular characters in recent anime, then this is probably the anime for you.
