Overview

Soul Eater is a strange anime. It’s about students at an academy called Death Weapon Meister Academy where weapons are created for the shinigami, Lord Death, to use. Half of the students can transform into these weapons, and the other half are the meisters who wield them in their transformed state.

In order to become an official Death Scythe, a weapon must be used to defeat and consume the souls of 99 monsters and one witch. Meisters and weapons are paired up together based on the wavelengths of their own souls and through Soul Resonance, they essentially become extensions of each other.

The story follows Maka and Soul as they work towards turning Soul into the newest Death Scythe.

Characters

Maka is one of the two protagonists of the series. She is a meister who is also the daughter of a successful meister and the current Death Scythe. Maka works hard and wants to do everything by the book, which occasionally puts her at odds with her partner, Soul.

Soul is Maka’s partner and weapon. He’s essentially the opposite of Maka in that he’s pretty lazy and isn’t above using shortcuts to get to his goal. The one thing both he and Maka have in common, though, is their drive to become/create the strongest Death Scythe ever.

Black Star is another meister at the academy. He’s considered a ninja assassin, but he prefers to do everything as loud as possible and with style rather than stealth. Characters who are similar to Black Star are Naruto from the original Naruto series, and whatever the main character’s name is from the new anime, Black Clover (I haven’t seen it, but I hear he yells everything he says).

Tsubaki is Black Star’s partner and weapon. Unlike Soul who can just turn into a scythe, Tsubaki can transform into a variety of ninja weapons. As with Maka and Soul, Black Star and Tsubaki have different personalities. Tsubaki is quiet and patient which is what enables her to deal with being paired up with someone like Black Star.

Death the Kid is the final of the three main meisters. He’s the son of Lord Death and is one of the most proficient meisters at the academy. He has an obsession with things being symmetrical, which is occasionally an issue due to his own hair coloration being asymmetrical.

Because of his obsession with symmetrical things, Death the Kid actually has two weapons, Liz and Patty, who take the form of pistols. The elder sister, Liz, acts more mature than her sister but gets annoyed with Death the Kid’s obsession with symmetry. Patty, on the other hand, isn’t the brightest, but she makes up for it with her happy-go-lucky attitude and her motivational pep talks.

Conclusion

I thought Soul Eater was pretty good, but it still wasn’t anywhere near the best anime I’ve seen. It probably could be a 7, but apparently, I gave it a 6/10 so that’s what we’re sticking with like always.

If this anime seems like something for you, then you’ll be glad to know there are 51 episodes so it’s not that short. There’s also a spin-off called Soul Eater NOT! which I haven’t seen but is rated lower than the original series.
