Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 27 Review

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 27 Review

Preparing for the Final Test

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 27 started off as I expected. After the first test of the First-Class Mage Exam, we got a “cooldown” episode. So, it makes sense that we’d get the same thing after the second test of the exam.

But, we only got half of a cooldown episode. Only the first half of Episode 27 caught up with mages who took the second test. And, we only got to see a few of them: Kanne, Lawine, Denken, Richter, and Laufen. Where was Wirbel, Übel, Land, and Methode?

Something I liked about this part of the episode, though, was that we saw a combination of winners and losers. Kanne passed the second test, while Lawine didn’t. Likewise, Denken and Laufen passed the second test, while Richter didn’t. This is important because it reinforces that failing the exam isn’t the end.

Richter repairing Fern’s staff

As long as you’re alive, you can take the exam again in three years. And, this is something Denken makes sure to point out to Richter. He says that Richter is a strong mage who got unlucky. And, in three more years, Richter will be even stronger.

Speaking of Richter, we also saw him repair Fern’s staff in his shop at Frieren’s request. Initially, Frieren told Fern to get a new staff because repairing hers wasn’t worth it. And, Richter even says the same thing. But, both Frieren and Richter come to realize that they’re wrong.

Sure, a new staff would be better than Fern’s old staff. But, a new staff wouldn’t be Fern’s staff. This staff is important to her. She’s had it since she started training as a mage. And, she’s taken good care of it over the years. In the world of magic, that probably counts for something.

The First First-Class Mage

Who was the first First-Class Mage? Thanks to Episode 27, we know his name is Lernen and he still serves as a First-Class Mage today. Typically, he’s the one who proctors the third and final test of the exam. But, this year is going to be a bit different.

Do we know anything else about Lernen? Well, we know that, until this episode, he was the most skilled of the First-Class Mages. How do we know this? Serie herself holds him in high regard. And, he’s also the only one of the First-Class Mages who knew Frieren was suppressing her mana.

None of the others realized she was doing this. They simply thought that, despite being an elf, she had the same mana as a human mage. Lernen noticed her mana output waver for a moment and recognized this as evidence of mana suppression.

First-Class Mage Lernen from the anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 27
First-Class Mage Lernen

He hasn’t seen what Frieren’s true mana output is. But, he estimates that it’s on par with Serie’s. However, in doing so, he reveals his own limitations. Serie does indeed output a massive amount of mana that seems to be on par with Frieren’s unsupressed. But, that’s not Serie’s true mana output.

You see, despite saying that this kind of mana suppression is useless, Serie does it, as well. The vast amount of mana that Serie puts off is what remains after she suppresses her mana. So, I can’t even imagine how much mana she truly has. She might have the most of any living creature.

Also, since Lernen has never noticed this, we can assume Serie is even better at suppressing her mana than Frieren. Frieren’s mana wavered in such a way that Lernen noticed it. Serie’s never has. And, this is why Lernen is no longer the most skilled First-Class Mage.

An Anomaly Calls for an Anomaly

Frieren ruined this year’s First-Class Mage Exam. She’s too skilled of a mage. But, how does that work? How does one mage being too skilled ruin the exam? Shouldn’t it simply mean that she has an easier time passing? Yes, but there’s more to it than that.

The problem is that Frieren dragged other mages along with her who aren’t First-Class material. For example, Kanne and Lawine. Without Frieren on their team, they likely would have failed the first test. And in the second test, you could, as Serie does, argue that Frieren carried everyone who passed.

Yes, if Frieren wasn’t there, then the replica of Frieren also wouldn’t have been there. But, Frieren (and Fern) dealt with Frieren’s replica alone. And, they helped the others come up with a plan. So, at the end of the day, having Frieren there was a net positive.

Fern talking to Serie from the anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 27
Fern talking to Serie

This is why Serie chooses to proctor the final test herself. She needs the test to be so hard that almost none of the remaining mages pass. And, her test of choice is a one-on-one interview with her. If she decides the mage she’s talking to is too weak, they fail.

Kanne is the first mage we see get tossed out. She fails immediately because Serie senses that Kanne is too overwhelmed by her mana. This is the same for everyone else we see other than Frieren and Fern. Frieren still fails for personal reasons. But, Fern passes.

Fern is the first person (we don’t know about Frieren), who realized that Serie was suppressing her mana. That’s why I said Lernen is no longer the most skilled First-Class Mage. Fern usurped him. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Denken meet Serie. So, he may have passed the test, too.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 27? Were you expecting to get the final test in this episode? How do you think Lernen compares against Frieren and Fern? And, do you think Denken passed the test? I’m expecting to find out in the final episode.

Chained Soldier Episode 11 Review

Chained Soldier Episode 11 Review

Formation S and Himari’s Secret Weapon

Chained Soldier Episode 11 was all about the battle between the MDF and the humanoid Shuuki. Kyouka and Tenka were fighting Aoba. Shushu and Sahara were fighting Coco. And, Himari and Yachiho were fighting Naon.

At first, these fights weren’t going the MDF’s way. But, the MDF members have a few tricks on their sleeves. The first of these that we saw was Shushu and Sahara’s “Formation S.” What does the S stand for? Small (shrink?). This might be the first time we saw Shushu shrink herself in a combat situation.

Shushu shrunk down and had Sahara throw her directly into Kuma’s mouth (Kuma is the bear Shuuki). Then once swallowed by Kuma, Sahara uses her Paradigm Shift to become giant. Of course, this didn’t end up well for Kuma, who was ripped in half from the inside. Though, his wounds healed not too long after.

Himari using her secret weapon

Okay, so while I liked Shushu’s “Formation S,” I wasn’t really a fan of how Himari helped to defeat Naon. Himari tells Yachiho that after the exhibition match, she did some serious training. And, the result of this training was the creation of a new, secret weapon.

What is this secret weapon? Himari can now have an afro of guns. Alright, so that’s not quite what the secret weapon is. But, it’s the most prominent way that she can use it. The actual secret weapon is that she’s further mastered the weapon ability that she often copies.

I don’t remember if we’ve seen her transform her legs into guns. But, at the very least, she could transform her arms into guns. Now, she can transform even more of her body into guns — like her hair. So, basically, her secret weapon is that she’s more proficient with this ability.

Tenka’s Bright Future

Episode 11 didn’t include any rewards for Yuuki. But, that doesn’t mean we didn’t get any fan service. We got to see Shushu imagining some ecchi content involving Coco, Naon, and Aoba. We also got to see some ecchi content involving Tenka. And, we even got a random panty shot of Himari.

But, the best fan service of the episode wasn’t ecchi fan service. Well, most of it wasn’t. It was when we got to see the bright future Tenka was imagining for herself. She imagined her future with Yuuki and her sister-in-law, Aoba.

First, we see Tenka having a nice dinner with Yuuki and Aoba. This appears to be a date at the Wakura family home where she’s getting to know her future sister-in-law. Next, we see Tenka and Yuuki kissing at their wedding, with Aoba in attendance.

Tenka imagining her future with Yuuki from the anime series Chained Soldier Episode 11
Tenka imagining her future with Yuuki

After that, comes the ecchi part of Tenka’s bright future. Here we see Tenka spending some quality time with Yuuki from Yuuki’s perspective. Surprisingly, in this scene, Tenka’s on the bottom. I assumed she’d be more of a top considering her personality. She’s pretty assertive and calls Yuuki “Slave-kun,” after all.

A few months after that last shot, we see a heavily pregnant Tenka. And, Aoba is pressing her ear up against Tenka’s stomach so she can hear the baby’s heartbeat. Finally, the baby’s born and we get a scene of Aoba holding it while Yuuki and Tenka look on.

This was some wholesome fan service. But, I think my favorite part was how Aoba was still a humanoid Shuuki throughout it all. I guess that makes sense since Tenka never saw Aoba when she was a human. However, it’s still funny, to me, that she pictures Aoba this way in her “bright future.”

The Eight Thunder Gods

In Episode 10, Shikoku told Jouryuu that it was time for them to make their God’s declaration. I took this to mean that they were going to declare something about the God they followed. You know, their God.

But, apparently, that’s not what she meant. Shikoku wasn’t talking about the declaration of their God. She was talking about their declaration as gods. That’s pretty different. Shikoku, Jouryuu, and Rairen aren’t the followers of some God. They’re gods themselves — at least, according to them.

Shikoku also now refers to them as the Eight Thunder Gods. That’s very interesting considering there are only three of them, that we know of. So, I guess over the course of the series, five more are going to be revealed. And, it should be noted that Aoba, Naon, and Coco are not included in this.

Jouryuu and Shikoku of the Eight Thunder Gods from the anime series Chained Soldier Episode 11
Jouryuu and Shikoku of the Eight Thunder Gods

Well, at least, these three aren’t included right now. Shikoku refers to them as mutts, heavily implying that she views them as beneath her. But, if that’s how she really feels, why has she been searching for them? It seems like there’s more to this than Shikoku’s saying here.

My prediction is that — at the very least — Aoba is set to become one of the Eight Thunder Gods. That doesn’t mean Aoba herself is one. She might be a vessel for one of them to take over. And, that doesn’t mean this will happen. But, my guess is that’s Shikoku’s plan.

What evidence do I have to back this prediction up? Well, there must be some reason Shikoku’s interested in the humanoid Shuuki. And, it was said that Aoba’s the only one who can handle eating multiple Mato Peaches to power up. So, there’s something special about her.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Chained Soldier Episode 11? Do you like Himari’s secret weapon, or do you think it’s dumb like I do? What was your favorite part of Tenka’s bright future imaginary scenario? And, do you think Aoba is meant to be one of the Eight Thunder Gods?

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 Review

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 Review

Leoparde’s Secret Stars

Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11 was delayed for something like seven hours. But, it was finally released internationally. Not that this will matter for the majority of you reading this review. But, I figured it was worth mentioning in case the remaining episodes are also delayed.

Now, I want to start this review off by continuing our discussion of Leoparde’s stars from Episode 10. In Episode 10, Leoparde revealed that she has three stars. That’s the same number as Nero Alice, Loco Musica, Leberblume, and Sister Gigant.

But, it was unclear how or when she acquired those stars. Did she always have them? Did she only manifest them during this fight? Or, did she get them from some off-screen training arc that mirrored Magia Azure’s? At the time, we didn’t know. But, now we do, and the answer was kind of obvious.

Leoparde about to finish off Sister Gigant from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Leoparde about to finish off Sister Gigant

So, it turns out that Leoparde had three stars all along. She didn’t gain them during this fight or through training beforehand. And, that makes sense for two main reasons. The first is something I pointed out last week, which is that we had never seen her chest before.

The second, however, is even more important. At no point before this did we ever see a girl permanently increase her star count. Sure, Magia Baiser can multiply her stars when she gets really worked up. But, once she calms down, she reverts back to only having two.

We never saw a character start with fewer stars and work their way up to having more. So, it wouldn’t have made much sense if Leoparde had to do that. The other girls had their stars all along. The only things they gained were special transformations like Leoparde’s cat form.

Magia Azure’s Veritas Transformation

Speaking of special transformations, they aren’t limited to the Enormita girls. In Episode 11, we saw Magia Azure use a special kind of transformation after saying “La Veritas.” I don’t know if there’s an official name for this transformation. So, for now, I’ll call it a Veritas transformation.

If we find out that there’s an official name for it in the future, I’ll start using that name for it then. But, regardless of what the name is, it’s clear that the Tres Magia needed something like this. Otherwise, they were about to get power crept out of relevancy.

We can assume that Baiser’s special transformation is when she multiplies her stars. She looks a bit different when this happens and she becomes more powerful. We also know that Leoparde has a special, more powerful transformation. And, it doesn’t seem like a stretch that the other girls will awaken them, too.

Magia Azure's La Veritas transformation from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Magia Azure’s Veritas transformation

If the Enormita girls were the only ones getting power-ups, the Tres Magia wouldn’t be a threat at all. In fact, the Tres Magia weren’t that much of a threat even before this. So, these Vertias transformations are really only helping them barely keep up.

I mean, do any of us expect the Tres Magia to be able to defeat Enormita ever? If they could, the series wouldn’t be as entertaining as it is. They need to remain at least a little weaker than the Enormita girls — or at least weaker than Baiser.

If the Tres Magia are too strong for Baiser to dominate, then what’s the point?

Anyway, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get to see too much of Azure’s Veritas transformation. The shot we got of her from behind reminded me of Yuki Yuna, so I wanted to see more.

Throwaway Pawn, Lord Enorme

I can’t say I was expecting Baiser to be able to defeat Lord as easily as she did. But, I thought how she managed to do it was pretty entertaining.

Baiser thought Lord’s goal of world domination was childish. That goal and Lord’s appearance weren’t matching up in Baiser’s mind. So, what did she do? She imagined that Lord was a child. And, apparently, that got her in the mood to fight because Baiser likes bullying the weak.

I was hoping for a little more ecchi content involving Lord. The spanking was good. But, we only saw that happening while she looked like a child. I would have liked to see more of it from the perspective of the other girls.

What’s more important, though, is the effect this spanking had on Lord. As Baiser was spanking her, Lord was losing her stars until one remained.

Magia Baiser punishing Lord Enorme from the anime series Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11
Magia Baiser punishing Lord Enorme

At the very end of the episode, we find out that Lord was using borrowed power. She only ever had one star naturally. The other three stars were all the result of power she borrowed from Venalita. And, as Venalita says, Lord was only ever a throwaway pawn.

Venalita used Lord in order to bring out the true power of the other girls. So, we have to once again ask, “What is Venalita after?” At this point, we still don’t know. Though, as I theorized after Episode 1, it may be that Venalita wants to see magical girls and villains fight.

The answer may be that simple. Or, it may be that Venalita wants to defeat Vatz because of some rivalry. But, whatever his reason is, I don’t think it’s going to be complex. This is a parody anime. I doubt he’s collecting soul energy to power the universe.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Gushing over Magical Girls Episode 11? Were you waiting to watch the episode because of the international release delay? How strong do you think Azure is now that she has her Veritas transformation? And, was the fight against Lord all that you hoped it would be?

Sound! Euphonium 2 Review

Sound! Euphonium 2

Gearing Up For Season 3

Sound! Euphonium 2 (Hibike! Euphonium 2 / 響け!ユーフォニアム2) is, you guessed it, the second season of the Sound! Euphonium anime. It’s been a long 4+ years since I watched and reviewed the first season. But, the third season is airing in about a month.

I doubt I’ll be reviewing the third season on a weekly basis — there are other anime I’m going to prioritize. However, I still want to watch it while it airs and be able to review it not too long after it ends. That means it’s time for me to catch up.

Unfortunately for me, the second season isn’t the only part of Sound! Euphonium I need to watch. There are two canon movies between this season and the upcoming season. So, if you like this series, you have those reviews to look forward to over the next few weeks or months.

Reina Kousaka and Kumiko Oumae watching fireworks together

There’s also the Liz and the Blue Bird spin-off movie. I’m not sure if I’m going to watch that before the third season begins airing. And, I was originally planning to skip it entirely. But, now that I know it’s about Mizore and Nozomi, I want to watch it.

Mizore and Nozomi are two of the major supporting characters in this season. These two were at the center of one of the big pieces of drama from season 2. So, watching that movie might be pretty important for their backstories.

So, anyway, watching this season was the start of my new Sound! Euphonium journey. I’m going to be ingesting a lot of content from this series. And, hopefully, that doesn’t burn me out on it. But, as you’ll see in the next section of this review, it might already be too late for me.

I’m Too Old For This

I want to preface this section by pointing out some good things about this season. The art and animation are amazing, of course. The soundtrack is good (as expected of a music anime). And, it has good (cute) characters.

To me, it’s pretty easy to see the good parts of Sound! Euphonium. That’s why I want to focus on the part that I didn’t like, which was the drama. Well, to be fair, not all of the drama was “bad.” Some of it, like the stuff with Asuka toward the end, was pretty good.

Asuka’s mother was forcing her to quit the band so she could focus on her studies. To an extent, I agree with her mother since Asuka has to take entrance exams. This caused a whole meltdown within the band, though. Luckily, it all turned out alright and Asuka was able to get the best of both worlds.

Mizore Yoroizuka with her Oboe from the anime series Sound! Euphonium 2
Mizore Yoroizuka with her Oboe

That’s the kind of drama that I think is good. How does one balance their studies and club activities? It’s something I’m sure many people have had to deal with at one point — even if not to this extent.

The whole Mizore and Nozomi situation, however, is what I would call bad drama. This was petty, childish, interpersonal drama that was annoying to watch. It was all about the internal politics of the band that began with a bunch of students walking out the year prior.

Sure, I guess if you’re in the band, you’d be invested in this stuff. But, as an outsider looking in, I couldn’t care less. Okay, so Nozomi left the band and now she wants to rejoin. What’s the problem? Let her join. Why are they gatekeeping a school club? It literally doesn’t matter that she left.

The First Year Is Over

Maybe, as implied by the preceding section’s headline, I’m too old. It’s been a very long time since I was in high school. So, maybe I’m too far removed from the drama that’s going on in this series to be interested in it.

But, I have hope that things will get better. The second season ends with the graduation of the third-year students and the end of the school year. And, this should be good because it means a lot of the issues I had with this season should be going away.

Let’s go over the core issue that rocked the band in the year before the series began. The third-year students wanted to perform in the main band during their last year. So, they did, at the expense of the younger students. Seeing this as being unfair, many first-year students left the club.

Asuka Tanaka with her Euphonium from the anime series Sound! Euphonium 2
Asuka Tanaka with her Euphonium

Those third-year students then graduated and everyone else moved up a grade. However, that didn’t solve everything. Once the problem third-years were gone, some lower-classmen rejoined the band. But, those who never left felt betrayed. They felt like the quitters shouldn’t be allowed back in.

Now, at the end of this series, another class has graduated. This means the only people left from that original incident are the current third-years. And, it appears that they’ve all resolved their issues by this point. That’s what the whole Nozomi and Mizore arc was about. So, there shouldn’t be any more of this particular drama.

Of course, Sound! Euphonium is a drama anime. There’s going to be drama. But, my hope is that it can now move on to better drama. Sure, the incoming freshmen will likely shake things up. However, I want to see the drama have more to do with the competitions.

Final Thoughts

I’m going to give Sound! Euphonium 2 a 6/10, which probably seems low to a lot of you. It’s a good anime in many ways. But, I couldn’t get very invested in it due to the pointless drama in the middle. However, as I said, I have high hopes for the future of the series.

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig- Review

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig- Review

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig- anime series cover art
Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-

Finally, An Isekai For Me

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig- (Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro / 豚のレバーは加熱しろ) likely doesn’t seem like a good anime to most people. It’s an isekai series about, you guessed it, a man who was reincarnated into a fantasy world as a pig.

But, to me, this sounded like a great premise. Why? I like pigs. They’re pretty neat. So, when I heard about this series, I thought that this was going to be good. Well, “good.” I thought it would, at the very least, be an entertaining watch. And, I actually think it was — at first.

Now, I admit that Butareba’s comedy isn’t for everyone. I saw a lot of people hating on it from the very first episode. There are plenty of sexual jokes, which are always divisive. But, I thought it mostly used these jokes in a decent way.

Jess and Pig from the anime series Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-
Jess and Pig

Pig — we never get his real name — is a virgin loser with some depraved thoughts. The gag is that his outward appearance now reflects his inner thoughts. And, to reinforce this, Jess, the other main character, can read Pig’s thoughts. Every time he has a dirty thought, she knows.

But, the dynamic between Pig and Jess isn’t quite what you’d expect. Yes, Pig thinks some unsavory things at times. However, at the end of the day, he’s a good guy who would never do anything to harm Jess. And, Jess believes in Pig’s good heart unconditionally. She’s never worried that he might be a bad person.

Now, to me, this dynamic is sort of the first piece of evidence that this isn’t a great show. Like, if Jess reacted negatively to Pig’s dirty thoughts, that would make it better. Her not seeing issues with the things Pig thinks doesn’t make for an interesting series.

Okay, So It’s Actually Bad

Despite my high hopes for Butareba, it didn’t take very long to see that it’s bad. Pig’s and Jess’s dynamic is only the very start. That’s probably the least bad thing about it. Problematic? Sure. But, that’s not what makes the series a bad series.

The entire premise of the series is the worst part. Jess is a magical slave called a Yethma who needs to go on a one-way journey to visit the king. This is a pilgrimage all Yethma have to make — and it’s unclear if any have made the journey successfully.

Along the way, the Yethma have to survive the wilderness and hunters who kill them for bounties. And, when they finally make it to the capital, it’s unclear how to actually get inside. This is why there are no confirmed accounts of Yethma completing the pilgrimage.

Pig from the anime series Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-
Pig

So, does this sound like a good plot to you? It has some interesting parts, like the Yethma hunters. But, overall, it’s a pretty basic story of a journey that Jess is going on simply because she’s supposed to. It’s hard to get invested into the plot at all — there’s not much to it.

The next major issue with Butareba is the animation quality. It sucks. I mean, I thought it was fine at the start of the series. But, once you get farther into it, the poor animation is hard to ignore. Later in the series, there are more action scenes. And it’s in those scenes that the animation fails.

Animation quality is a funny thing. For a lot of slice of life and drama series, it doesn’t matter that much. Good animation improves those series. But, it’s not necessary. For action anime and action scenes, the opposite is true. Good animation is necessary.

Is This Only The Beginning?

The wildest thing about Butareba is that this season might only be the beginning. This entire journey with Jess and Pig may have only been the prologue. And, I say that because of the terrible ending to the season.

Jess and Pig successfully make it to the capital and receive an audience with the king. They request that the king to turn Pig back into a human, which he accepts. But, the king can’t simply turn Pig back. He has to kill Pig, at which point Pig’s soul will return to his body in his old world.

So, yeah, at the end of the journey, Pig gets slaughtered and goes back home. If the series ended right there, that would be a bad enough ending. It pretty much erased everything that happened throughout the story and reset it to zero — but not in the Re:Zero way.

Jess from the anime series Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-
Jess

What made the ending even worse, however, is what happens next. Pig writes a fantasy book about his time living as a pig in another world. And, some people who read it reached out to him about their own experiences in that same world.

At first, Pig thought these people were coming up with their own fan fictions based on his story. But, it then becomes clear that these people had also lived in that world for a time. And so, together, they devise a plan to send Pig back into that world so he can be with Jess.

And, I guess the other people are also going to be sent back into the fantasy world, as well. I don’t know what happens after that. But, I’ve seen art from the series where there are now multiple pigs. So, to me, that says there’s a lot more to this series.

Final Thoughts

Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig- is a 3/10. It’s very bad and I’m not going to watch a second season if it ever gets one — probably. I might still watch it. But, I’ve been trying to hold back and not continue to watch series I know are bad.
