New Season, New Characters

I’d argue that Overlord IV is the best Overlord has ever been. In general, I think the series gets better with each season. And the fourth season is no exception. The characters, world, and plot all develop further and become more interesting.

Also, for the first time, this season actually looked better than the season preceding it. It had been the norm for each new season of Overlord to look worse than the last. Do you remember how terrible the CGI used in Overlord III was? Well, Overlord IV doesn’t look that bad even though it still uses subpar CGI at times.

To me, one of the biggest improvements of Overlord IV is the cast. Overlord has a lot of characters. And this season introduced even more. We met some dwarves, dragons, and most importantly, adventurers. Right now, I want to talk about the adventurers.

Ainz and Albedo from the anime series Overlord IV
Ainz and Albedo

Before this season, we knew of 2 adventurer parties. These are Darkness and Blue Rose. Darkness is Ainz’s Adamantite-ranked adventurer group. The members are Momon, Nabe, and Hamsuke. Blue Rose is the all-female Adamantite group of Lakyus, Gagaran, Tina, Tia, and Evileye.

In Season 4 alone, we learned of 4 additional adventurer groups. They are Silver Thread Bird, Four Armaments, Red Drop, and Black Scripture. Technically, we don’t know if Black Scripture counts as an adventurer group. But, they’re from the Slane Theocracy and seem to be the strongest characters we’ve met other than Ainz.

Silver Thread Bird and Red Drop are both Adamantite groups, like Darkness and Blue Rose. Red Drop and Blue Rose are actually “sister” groups. The leader of Red Drop, Azuth, is the uncle of the leader of Blue Rose, Lakyus. Four Armaments is a Mithril group, 2 ranks below Adamantite.

Of Dwarves & Dragons

The middle third of this season is all about Dwarves and Dragons (and Quagoa). Basically, Ainz wants to forge an alliance with the Dwarves. He believes that their rune technology has the potential to revolutionize warfare. If they can advance it enough, it’ll be far cheaper and more effective than enchanting.

But, the Dwarves have some issues they need Ainz’s help with before they can consider an alliance. Their capital city was overrun by two other races: Dragons and Quagoa. The Quagoa are werewolf-like creatures that aren’t very interesting. The Dragons, however, are Dragons.

From what I remember, we saw a single Dragon in one of the earlier seasons. I don’t remember anything else about it, though. This time, we have a whole Dragon community ruled over by a king. And I thought this Dragon king could have been a match for Ainz. I was mistaken.

Aura meeting Hejinmal

The dragons are probably the most disappointing part of the entire season. I love seeing Ainz and his followers obliterate anyone who stands in their way with ease. But, at the same time, I do want to see them have to actually fight every once in a while. The Dragons could have been an opportunity for that.

On the other hand, we have the Dwarves. Individually, the Dwarves aren’t all that interesting. But, I’m excited to see how Ainz’s alliance with them will impact the series down the line. The idea that runes could be the next warfare “meta” is intriguing.

This is a technology that was cast aside by most. Enchanting is better than runecrafting in pretty much every way. But, Ainz has reason to believe that the current limits on runecrafting can be overcome. Sure, it’ll make his army even more overpowered. But, it’s neat to see him innovating.

Re-Estize Is Dead; Long Live Ainz Ooal Gown

Something I wasn’t expecting to happen so soon was the downfall of the Re-Estize Kingdom. Ainz completely destroyed it. And the season ends with a shot of him sitting on a thrown of rubble. It was a great shot.

On the one hand, I like that the Re-Estize Kingdom is no more because it shows the world isn’t static. The lines on the map can change. Just because a country, a ruler, or a people are around right now doesn’t mean they will be in the future.

Ainz’s attack on the Re-Estize Kingdom also made the other countries in the region take notice. After all, he destroyed it to make an example out of it. This is what happens when you betray the Sorcerer Kingdom. But, at the same time, it now means the other countries recognize the threat of the Sorcerer Kingdom.

A female adventurer fighting a Death Knight from the anime series Overlord IV
A female adventurer fighting a Death Knight

The one thing I don’t like about the fall of the Re-Estize Kingdom is that it coincided with the death of Prince Zanac. Prince Zanac was a good character. He had a lot going on and I wanted to see how he navigated “ruling” under Ainz.

In fact, Ainz was also interested in him. When Zanac’s men mutinied and killed him, Ainz lost interest in the Re-Estize Kingdom. He did say he was going to attack anyway. But, it seems that Zanac’s death sealed the fate of the rest of the kingdom.

I’m still holding out hope that Ainz resurrects Prince Zanac. However, that could set a dangerous precedent. We know resurrection exists in the world Ainz is in. But, I kind of like that when a character dies, they stay dead. I wouldn’t want resurrection to become a normal thing in the series.

Conclusion

Overlord IV is a 7/10 from me. It’s a good season of a good anime. And I’m looking forward to what comes next. Also, while I wasn’t a huge fan of the OP for this season, I did like the ED quite a bit.

Overlord IV Episode 13

Overlord IV Episode 13

Time For the Kingdom to Burn

The final episode of Overlord IV was good. Well, most of it was good. There was one part of Episode 13 I wasn’t a fan of. Can you guess which part it was? It’s something I’ve complained about before with other series.

If you guessed that I didn’t like Princess Renner breaking out into song, you’d be correct. I thought I was watching an episode of Love Live for a second there. Other than that, though, I enjoyed this conclusion to the season.

At the start of the episode, Mare said some interesting things. His task is to burn down the capital city. But, he’s worried that he won’t be able to do a good enough job. He’s concerned that some people may be able to escape from the fire. What a considerate thing for Mare to think about.

Mare about to burn down the Kingdom from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 13
Mare about to burn down the Kingdom

Anyway, the interesting part is how Mare’s actions later in the episode go against what he said. Despite his concerns about there being survivors, he told Climb to get to safety. At the time, this was pretty confusing. I started doubting what Mare meant at the beginning of the episode.

Later on, we learn why he did what he did. Ainz’s followers had orders not to kill Climb. I’ll get to why that is in the next section. But, again, at the time I didn’t understand why Mare let Climb go. And that’s even considering I knew Princess Renner was working with Nazarick.

So, my question to you is, did you realize what was going on when Mare let Climb escape? Or, like me, were you wondering why he would do something like that? After all, Mare doesn’t seem to have any qualms about slaughtering humans — even women and children.

Princess Renner’s Master Plan

As I mentioned, Ainz’s followers were under orders not to harm Climb. This comes at Princess Renner’s request. But, why did she want Ainz to spare Climb? And why did she betray her kingdom in the first place?

According to her, it was all so that she could spend the rest of eternity with Climb. Princess Renner’s goal from the start was to be with Climb. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn’t have been able to marry him. But, even when her father offers Climb her hand in marriage, that’s not good enough.

By selling out the Kindom, Princess Renner struck a deal with Ainz. In return for her planning out the Kingdom’s downfall, he’ll turn her into an immortal demon. And as a bonus, he threw Climb in as well, so she can be with him forever. This is what all the people of the Kingdom died for.

Princess Renner's demon form from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 13
Princess Renner’s demon form

Honestly, the sacrifice of those tens of thousands, –or even hundreds of thousands — was worth it. Not because Princess Renner and Climb get to be together forever. It was worth it because we got to see Princess Renner’s demon form. She suddenly has the best character design.

Now, what I’m left wondering is what Princess Renner being a demon actually means. Allegedly, that means she’s immortal now. And we can see that she has little bat wings growing out of her back. Her canines also seem to be more pronounced than before — like fangs.

So, when she says that Ainz made her into a demon, does she actually mean a vampire? I want to say yes. But, if that was the case, wouldn’t she be Shalltear’s underling instead of Albedo’s? From what I remember, Albedo is supposed to be a succubus.

The Kingdom Has Fallen

I think my favorite scene of the episode was Ainz sitting on a thrown of rubble out front of the castle. That was such a power move. I can’t think of a better way for him to celebrate his hard-earned victory.

But, there was something missing from the end of the episode. You may recall that I predicted Ainz would resurrect Prince Zanac. He resurrected Climb for Renner. So, we know it’s within his ability to do so. But, unfortunately, it would seem that my boy Zanac isn’t making a return.

Although, I’m going to hold out hope that it could still happen in a future season. When the local lords arrived at the capital, Ainz told them to continue governing as they were. But, he also mentioned that he’d let them know when a new governing system was in place.

Ainz sitting on a thrown of rubble

Even I’ll admit that Zanac making a return seems unlikely at this point. And it’s not like his character is necessary. There are still a lot of characters — and there will undoubtedly be a lot more introduced. I hope that one of the new characters will be able to fill the void left by Zanac’s death.

Maybe Princess Renner will be the new Queen of Re-Estize. That is if the country gets to maintain its “autonomy.” Of course, it won’t actually be an autonomous nation regardless of what happens. Ainz will be in charge. But, there’s no guarantee he’ll make it into a part of the Sorcerer Kingdom.

We should also remember why Ainz destroyed the Kingdom, to begin with. He did it to send a message to all the other nations that this is what he does to his enemies. So, could he leave the capital in ruins forever?

Conclusion

What do you think of Overlord IV Episode 13? Did you think it was a good ending to the season? Do you like Princess Renner’s new character design? And what do you think will become of the Kingdom in the future? Let me know in the comments.

Overlord IV Episode 12

Overlord IV Episode 12

Blue Rose Assassination

Overlord IV Episode 12 went by way too fast. It felt like a few minutes had passed, and then the episode was over. If I wasn’t reviewing the series weekly, this is one that I’d prefer to binge once all the episodes were out.

So, what happened in this episode? Well, we saw what at first appeared to be the members of Blue Rose assassinating their leader. This was quite a surprise — especially since it happened during an audience with the Princess. But, we soon learned what was really going on and why it happened when it did.

First, why did the members of Blue Rose jump Lakyus when they did? The answer is that they knew she’d be disarmed and would let her guard down during a meeting with the Princess. Even outnumbering her, they wanted these additional assurances.

The members of Blue Rose meeting with the Princess from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 12
The members of Blue Rose meeting with the Princess

So, what happened to Lakyus? Well, it started with Tina leading Brain away so he wouldn’t interfere. Then, Tia gave Lakyus some poisoned tea and stabbed her with poisoned needles. Gagaran pummeled her. And Evileye cast spells on her to weaken her. But, why did they do this?

At first, I really did think they were going to kill Lakyus. And as for why, I assumed they must have found something out about her. It could have been that she was secretly working with the Sorcerer Kingdom. That could have been pretty intense considering the Princess is doing exactly that.

But, it turns out they weren’t actually trying to kill her. They wanted to weaken her so Evileye could use Charm Person on her. Once Lakyus was under Evileye’s control, they planned to teleport out of the Kingdom. Their reason? They didn’t want to let her die fighting Ainz’s army.

Fleeing the Kingdom

It’s a bit curious that Ainz didn’t set up any way to prevent people from teleporting out of the Kingdom’s capital. But, I guess that’s not something most people can do. And I’d imagine that even adventurers with teleportation skills can’t do it on a large scale.

The fact that Evileye has a teleportation skill seems to be unique. But, as I said in my Episode 10 review, Evileye herself seems to be unique. And from what we saw in this episode, I have some theories about her. I don’t believe she’s human.

Now, as a disclaimer, I don’t remember if anything about Evileye got revealed earlier. Maybe everything I’m about to theorize was already confirmed or denied in the past. But, in case it wasn’t, I’m going to put my theory out there. Between Episodes 10 and 12, I’m pretty convinced.

Blue Rose teleporting out of the Kingdom from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 12
Blue Rose teleporting out of the Kingdom

So, in Episode 10, we established that Evileye is stronger than most Adamantite-ranks. On top of that, we saw her use the skill Charm Person in both episodes. Why is that important? Well, I can only remember one other character using the Charm Person skill. That’s the same skill used by Shalltear.

One last piece of evidence is where Evileye is teleporting Blue Rose. She says they’re going to a country that fell into ruin a long time ago. And she also comments that it’s far, far away and the Princess wouldn’t have heard of it.

To me, that kind of makes it sound like this country existed before anyone else alive was around to witness it. So, how does Evileye know about it? I’m pretty convinced that Evileye is a vampire. She’s powerful enough and has the right skill. And this forgotten country is probably her homeland.

Brain Freeze

That’s a pretty good section title, isn’t it? Do you get it? It’s because his name is Brain and Cocytus froze him. Brain freeze. Do you get it? Anyway, Brain Unglaus is dead and he didn’t stand much of a chance. Though, Cocytus did appear impressed by Brain’s abilities.

The fight between Brain and Cocytus doesn’t really matter. It was obvious that Brain never stood a chance. Instead, what I want to discuss now is what Cocytus did after killing Brain. It’s pretty interesting, and you may not have understood why he did what he did.

So, first of all, Cocytus freezes Brain’s body. He could have done this for 2 reasons. The first is so that Ainz can resurrect and recruit Brain at a later date. After all, Cocytus mentioned that Brain would be a good addition to Nazarick. He killed him because he didn’t want to dishonor his warrior’s spirit.

Brain Unglaus challenging Cocytus from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 12
Brain Unglaus challenging Cocytus

The second possible reason is to preserve the honor of Brain’s final moments. And this ties into what Cocytus did after freezing Brain. He doesn’t walk directly passed Brain’s body. Instead, he walks around the block to continue toward the castle. Why?

I interpreted this action as Cocytus acknowledging Brain’s effort and last stand. Even though he killed Brain in one attack, Cocytus goes the long way around as a sign of respect. It’s kind of like he’s saying that Brain was able to hold him off, even if only for one block.

Anyone who comes to that intersection later will see Brain’s body frozen there. They’ll also see that Cocytus’s frozen path doesn’t pass Brain’s body. So, the implication is that Brain did his duty as a soldier and defended the capital to his death. I like Cocytus’s code of honor.

Conclusion

What do you think about Overlord IV Episode 12? Did you think the other members of Blue Rose were going to kill Lakyus? What are your thoughts on my Evileye theory? And did you understand why Cocytus walked the long way around Brain? Let me know in the comments.

Overlord IV Episode 11

Overlord IV Episode 11

Kingdom Annihilated

Overlord IV Episode 11 was good, but also a disappointment at the same time. This isn’t confirmed yet. But, it would seem that we skipped over the battle that wiped out the Re-Estize Kingdom’s forces. Though, now that I think about it more, do I really care about the battle?

Without Ainz playing a role, would the battle be all that interesting? I don’t know. But, what I do know is that one of my favorite parts of Overlord is seeing Ainz’s forces decimate their opponents. And this battle would be perfect in that regard.

I want to skip to the end of the episode now, though. At the end, the dragon lord says something interesting. He mentions not being able to silence someone completely. And the reason for not being able to do this is the existence of resurrection magic.

Ainz and Albedo prepared for battle from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 11
Ainz and Albedo prepared for battle

Who exactly the dragon lord was referring to when he made this comment is a bit unclear. I’ll go over my theory later in the review. But, for now, I want to focus on the existence of resurrection magic. That seems quite important. Though, not for the reason you might expect.

In Episode 10, we lost one of my favorite characters, Prince (King?) Zanac. Zanac’s death is what caused Ainz to lose interest in the battle. And now, we have the dragon lord bringing up the existence of resurrection magic. So, my bet is that we’re going to see someone bring Zanac back to life — probably Ainz.

Ainz told Albedo to bury Zanac’s head. But, we don’t know what actually happened to it. Ainz also inquired about the whereabouts of the rest of Zanac’s body. He asked about the armor, but what if the body was his real goal? Zanac better return.

Platinum Armor of the Nameless Warrior

Episode 11 revealed that the Drop of Red member in the mecha suit is none other than Azuth. I assumed it was going to be a different member of the guild. But, I don’t have any strong opinions about Azuth being the one in the armor one way or another.

The bigger reveal had to do with the warrior in the platinum armor. As far as we know, this is not a member of Drop of Red. That might seem obvious to you since we saw that the armor was being remotely controlled by a dragon lord.

But, that fact doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no connection. The dragon lord could be the true leader of Drop of Red, with Azuth only appearing as the leader. Still, that’s likely not the case. Instead, the dragon lord and Azuth teamed up because they both perceived Ainz as a threat.

"Riku Aganeia" from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 11
“Riku Aganeia”

It may be important to note that Azuth seemed very familiar with the dragon lord. He referred to him as a dragon lord and by the name Tsa, which I assume is his name. So, the dragon lord at least trusts Azuth enough to let Azuth know his identity.

Anyway, Ainz (Pandora’s Actor?) recognizes the platinum armor the dragon lord is controlling. He doesn’t know the name of the warrior who wore it. But, he knows that one of the 13 Heroes wore platinum armor. So, the obvious conclusion is that this is the same armor.

What became of the hero, though? It’s possible that the dragon lord killed him and that’s how he came to possess the armor. Or, it’s possible that he died some other way and someone entrusted his armor to the dragon lord. Either way, the “made-up” name of Riku Aganeia is probably the hero’s real name.

The Strongest Dragon Lord

Azuth calls Tsu the strongest dragon lord. But, Tsu is probably nothing compared to Ainz. After all, he wasn’t even fighting against Ainz when he said that Ainz was stronger than him. He was fighting against Pandora’s Actor — not exactly the strongest member of Nazarick.

Speaking of Pandora’s Actor, I’m glad we got the reveal about him standing in for Ainz at the end of the episode. If that scene didn’t happen, I was going to be complaining a lot more in this review. When he begged on his knees for Riku Aganeia to listen to him, that was very out of character for Ainz.

But, because we learned that it was actually Pandora’s Actor, I no longer have an issue with that scene. Though, maybe Pandora’s Actor should refrain from doing something like that as Ainz. It wouldn’t be good if someone else saw that.

Dragon Lord Tsa from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 11
Dragon Lord Tsa

Back to the dragon lord, I do think he was telling the truth when he said he was fighting to save the world. In his mind, the players are a dangerous faction originating from another world. As long as they exist within this world, the balance of power will be thrown off.

Why are the players so dangerous? Well, look at Ainz. He’s so much stronger than any natural being from this world. He can single-handedly take down entire nations. The mere existence of a being as powerful as Ainz is enough to disrupt the way nations interact with each other.

But, with Ainz, it’s much worse than that. He’s not existing off on his own. He’s getting involved in the affairs of all the surrounding countries. The players are a plague that descended upon the world. And from what we’ve seen, Ainz is the biggest threat of them all.

Conclusion

So, what are my takeaways from this episode? I think Zanac is going to make a return. He’s too good of a character to leave dead. And I also think that the dragon lord is an old ally of the hero who wore the platinum armor. But, what stood out the most from this episode to you?

Overlord IV Episode 10

Overlord IV Episode 10

Blue Rose and Drop of Red

Something I like about Overlord is that we get to see various adventurer teams. They add a bit of intrigue to the world. It’s neat to think about how there are adventurers out there going on quests even if we don’t always see them.

Last week, we met the mithril adventurer team known as the Four Armaments. Now, in Episode 10, we got to learn a bit about one of the adamantite adventurer teams, Drop of Red. And we learned a little more about the Blue Rose adventurer team, as well.

Blue Rose is the adamantite adventurer group we’ve followed since the start of the series. Or, close to the start. I don’t remember exactly when they first showed up. But, I didn’t realize how notable their distinction as adamantite adventurers is. According to Albedo, there are only 3 adamantite teams in the Re-Estize Kingdom.

Blue Rose adamantite adventurer team from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 10
Blue Rose adamantite adventurer team

Obviously, being an adamantite adventurer is a big achievement. But, I guess I assumed there would be a bit more of them than there are. At this point, I don’t think we know what the third adamantite team in the kingdom is. However, we now know Drop of Red is the second.

Well, it may be more accurate to say Drop of Red is the first and Blue Rose is the second. Based on the way everyone spoke of Drop of Red, they seem to be the top adventurer team in the country. Even the Blue Rose members respect them.

For now, we don’t know much about the Drop of Red members. We know their leader is the uncle of the leader of Blue Rose. And we know another one of their members has mecha armor. I’m hoping it won’t take too long to see the rest of them.

The Black Scripture

I guess technically speaking, The Black Scripture isn’t an adventurer team. Azuth of Drop of Red calls them the Theocracy’s elite heroic unit. My best guess is that the main difference between them and an adventurer team is that they work for a country.

Normally, adventurer teams don’t get involved in things like wars between nations. But, I have a feeling the same doesn’t apply to The Black Scripture. They seem to be on a mission from the Theocracy to defeat the Sorcerer King (Ainz). And they want to recruit Drop of Red and Blue Rose to help them in this mission.

As a whole, The Black Scripture has the best character designs of all the adventurer teams we know of so far. Their leader’s design isn’t that interesting. But, the other three have good designs. The large guy is cool, the invisible guy is cool, and the witch has a big hat.

The Black Scripture of the Theocracy from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 10
The Black Scripture of the Theocracy

I mentioned in the review of Episode 3 that the adamantite rank of adventurers doesn’t have a “level cap.” Ainz (Momon) is an adamantite adventurer despite being far stronger than any others (as far as we know).

Why am I bringing this up again? Because one of the members of The Black Scripture implied this is true of Evileye as well. The Black Scripture seem to be stronger than most adamantite adventurers. At least, the large guy doesn’t view Azuth or most of the Blue Rose to be threats.

But, he does single out Evileye. He says she’s as strong as him, maybe even stronger, and that she’d be “a bit troublesome” to deal with. Now, that doesn’t mean Evileye’s on the same level as Ainz by any means. However, it shows that other adamantite adventurers recognize that she’s not normal.

A Meeting Between Royalty

In my Episode 8 review, I said that Prince Zanac is one of the more interesting characters in the series. I actually like his character a lot. So, you can probably imagine that I wasn’t too happy about his death at the end of this episode.

And, it would appear that Ainz wasn’t too happy about Zanac’s death either. He sentences the nobles who killed Zanac to be tortured until they beg for death. And he also loses interest in the battle, telling Cocytus and Mare to slaughter the opposing army.

But, why would Zanac’s death affect Ainz in this way? Well, Ainz seems to have come to respect Zanac from their brief interaction. Yes, Zanac asked for Ainz to show mercy. But, he also accepted Ainz’s choice to follow through with the attack. Even when he knew he and his people would die, Zanac didn’t act like a coward.

Prince Zanac meeting with Ainz from the anime series Overlord IV Episode 10
Prince Zanac meeting with Ainz

Ainz left his meeting with Zanac thinking Zanac acted as a true member of royalty. And this even goes back to the fact that Zanac approached Ainz for an audience without guards. Despite how he looks, Zanac is a good ruler, as I’ve said before.

I should also point out that Zanac left his meeting with Ainz with similar feelings. He views Ainz as a good ruler because he puts the happiness of his people above all else. Though, he obviously disagrees with the methods Ainz is choosing. As Zanac said, there are other ways for Ainz to achieve his goal.

The last thing I want to mention here is that Ainz was very interested in Gazef’s sword and armor. Even after he found out Zanac died, he asked about the armor he was wearing. There must be some reason for his interest.

Conclusion

What do you think about Overlord IV Episode 10? Will we meet the third adamantite team of the Re-Estize Kingdom? Which member of The Black Scripture is your favorite? And are you disappointed to see Zanac killed off? Let me know in the comments.
