Overview

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World is one of my favorite anime as you may have noticed if you read yesterday’s Figure Friday post about Aqua. Along with Re:ZERO, KonoSuba is probably the best anime in the parallel world genre because it’s actually making fun of the genre as a whole.

The general plot is that the main character, Kazuma, is a NEET who died when he left his house to go buy a new game. In the afterlife he meets a goddess, Aqua, who offers to send him to a fantasy world instead of being reborn in our world.

His goal in this fantasy world would be to defeat the demon king and bring peace to the land, and to do so he is allowed to bring one item with him from the afterlife. This could be something like a magical sword to help him defeat monsters.

Instead, Kazuma decides to bring the goddess, Aqua, with him as his one item as a way to get back at her for laughing at how he died.

The fantasy world Kazuma and Aqua go to is set up in a similar way to a game. There are different classes of adventurers and they’re able to spend points they gain when they level up on different skills to help them.

Characters

Kazuma is the main character as I mentioned earlier. He was hoping that his abilities would be so amazing that everyone in the adventurer’s guild would be stunned, but instead all of his stats were average other than his extremely high luck.

He originally uses a sword to fight, but eventually gets a bow as well. He also uses his skill points on a wide variety of skills such as a thief skill, an energy drain skill, and a water creation spell. As the main character, he is generally well-rounded.

Aqua on the other hand is not so well-rounded. As a goddess, her magic stat was maxed out from the start and so she was able to claim the class of Arch Priestess. Other than that, however, her stats are nothing special and Kazuma even notes that her intelligence stat is lower than that of a normal human’s.

While Aqua already has powerful skills and attacks she can use as a goddess, she spends all of her skill points on party tricks to impress the other members of the adventurer’s guild.

Even though she is a powerful goddess, Aqua tends to act like a helpless child in the fantasy world and is the sole cause of most of the misfortune which befalls her party.

The third party member is Megumin, my personal favorite character. She is a few years younger than Kazuma, and we’ll say Aqua as well even though an age for her is never really given.

Megumin is of the Crimson Demon race which excels in all things magic. Due to this, she already has the class title of Arch Mage. She seems like the perfect party member except for one key issue; she only uses explosion magic and she can only use it once per day.

Megumin is so obsessed with explosion magic that she refuses to learn any other type of magic even though it takes so much energy that she is left unable to move after using it. She also has a severe case of something called chuunibyou which causes her to blow every situation out of proportion.

She also occasionally wears an eye patch because she thinks it looks cool.

The fourth and final member of the party is Darkness. Darkness is a holy knight who, like the other members of the party, has some fairly large issues. She’s able to take a lot of hits for her team which is good, but she’s also a masochist who enjoys both physical and emotional pain.

On top of that, she fights with a sword, but is unable to hit a single thing with it; making her completely useless offensively.

She is the oldest of the group and does act more mature than the rest occasionally which probably has less to do with her age and more to do with the fact that she is a holy knight with a noble upbringing.

Conclusion

KonoSuba is very close to being a 10 for me, but it’s just not quite there so I gave it a 9/10. The characters and plot are great, but it’s just missing something and I can’t quite figure out what.

That being said, other than the Monogatari series, it’s the series that I most look forward to a new season of. The first season came out in 2016 and the second in 2017 so hopefully we’ll get a third season at some point this year.

The OP for the second season of KonoSuba is available here.
