Overview

To start, this is mainly a review of the first season of Blue Exorcist because I actually dropped the anime during the second season. Typically I don’t want to review things that I’ve dropped, but since I at least finished one season of this I’ll consider it fair game.

It’s been a long time since I watched Blue Exorcist so this review might be on the shorter side, but let’s get into it.

The general plot is that there are twin brothers, Rin and Yukio who are demi-demons (Satan is their father) and they have been raised by an exorcist. Rin eventually exhibits some demonic powers while Yukio doesn’t. One day their adoptive father is killed by Satan I believe and then Rin goes to an academy to train as an exorcist under his brother Yukio so he can defeat Satan.

Complaints

We’re skipping the characters section today because I don’t really like or care about any of them. This ties into my first complaint in a way I suppose which is: why did they make everyone look the way they did? (see cover art above for reference)

They’re supposed to be exorcists who are part of the Catholic Church so why does that one kid have a yellow mohawk? Why does that lady look like a Yoko knock-off from Gurren Lagann? Why does the headmaster of this exorcist academy clearly look like the stereotypical anime demon trope and yet nobody else recognizes it?

Putting the character designs aside, the relationship between the Rin and his brother Yukio never made much sense to me. I can understand why the other students would be afraid of Rin because he shows clear signs that he is Satan’s son (the blue flames), but I still don’t understand why Yukio dislikes Rin so much.

They’re twins. They’re both the sons of Satan. So how can Yukio hate Rin for being Satan’s son when in reality he’s no different? It should be that Yukio is the only one who understands Rin, but in reality it’s the opposite.

My other complaints about the show are mostly minor as well, but many minor complaints do eventually add up.

Conclusion

I didn’t really care that much about the story in Blue Exorcist either and so in the end I gave it a 5/10. I hear it gets better, but I also ended up dropping season 2 partway through because I cared about that story even less. It seemed to focus more on the side characters who I didn’t like.

While I ended up dropping the anime, I have heard that the manga series is better than the anime so if you’re interested in this one, maybe that’s the route to choose.

Finally, here’s the OP for Blue Exorcist which I also don’t like very much. *This video has been taken down.
