Overview

Mitsuboshi Colors is probably my favorite anime of this season so far. The show follows the Colors as they protect the peace of their town from all kinds of danger such as a cat that looks like a panda.

The adventures of the Colors take them to all kinds of places like the underground market, the zoo, and the museum where they search for crime to fight. The cases the colors take on can be divided into three primary levels based on their severity. On occasion, however, cases can be downgraded to level 0 or upgraded to level 4.

Like with any slice of life anime, the chemistry between the characters is what makes the series good. In the case of Mitsuboshi Colors, the Colors all act like kids normally would and have the same view of the world as kids which is what makes this series so great. An example of this is how a dog getting loose in school is considered a higher level case than murder.

Characters

The leader of the Colors is Yui; the girl with her hair in a side ponytail. She’s the timidest of the Colors and actually seems to feel bad about the things the Colors do every once in a while unlike the other two. She reminds me of Akarin from Yuru Yuri because although she’s the leader, she’s often overlooked.

Kotoha is the one with long blue hair and serves as the “evil influence” of the Colors. She tends to have a dark outlook on life and is interested in finding cases involving murder. Kotoha is also frequently seen playing handheld video games, although she isn’t any good at them.

Sat-chan, the one with blonde hair, is the wildcard of the Colors. She’s the most energetic of the three and speaks her mind the most without caring who she’s talking to. Although the colors are supposed to protect the peace of the town, Sat-chan often makes trouble instead. She’s my favorite character due to her unpredictable character.

Saito, a police officer, is the designated enemy of the Colors. The Colors often comment on how he’s lazy and should get back to work while he’s out doing his rounds. However, the Colors do concede that the reason Saito is able to slack off is that they work so hard to keep the peace so he doesn’t have to. He’s also the one the colors play the most pranks on when they’re bored.

Pops is the owner of a general store called Whale Factory in town. The Colors frequent his store because he gives them cases and various other items to keep them from getting bored. Every episode, or maybe even every time we see him, he’s wearing a different pair of novelty sunglasses.

There are three other lesser characters in the series. These are Sat-chan’s mom who owns a fruit store, Nonoka, a high school girl who works at her family’s bakery, and Momoka, Nonoka’s older sister who wants to turn the bakery into an onigiri shop.

Conclusion

Mitsuboshi Colors is easily an 8/10 as far as I’m concerned. There were a few parts that kept it from being a 9, but even so, it’s probably my favorite anime of the Winter 2018 season. I’d say it’s even better than Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san and Darling in the FranXX which were my other two top anime this season.

If you’re looking for a wholesome comedy, then this is the perfect anime for you. The Colors’ endless antics are guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
