Spring 2018

This season I’m watching eight currently airing anime which makes this a slower season than Winter 2018 in which I was watching 13 if I’m not mistaken. However, for the purpose of this post I’ll just be going over the five new series/seasons I’m watching this Spring and skipping the three continuing series.

Boruto is the first of the three continuing series and the only one I currently have a post up about. The other two, Darling in the FranXX and Record of Grancrest War, will have posts about their first halves within the next few days.

For each of the five anime listed below I’ll just be covering what’s known only from the first episode since, for most of them, that’s all that’s aired so far.

Love To-LIE-Angle

Love To-LIE-Angle is the anime I’m watching this season that has the least potential. When I originally added this series to my Plan to Watch list before it started airing, I was under the impression that it was going to be a full-length series. However, as I learned after watching the first episode, it’s actually a short with five-minute episodes.

This short series follows Hanabi Natsuno as she moves back to her childhood town to attend high school. While she originally believes she’s going to be living in an extravagant manor, she finds that her lodging is actually a run-down building filled with a bunch of other girls.

Basically, this anime is just a yuri short which is why after only one episode I already have this series rated as a 4/10.

My Hero Academia Season 3

My Hero Academia is the only one of my five series this season that is a continuation of a previously aired series (I’m not counting Gun Gale Online because that’s a spin-off, not a continuation). As a continuation, this is the series on my list which I think is the most predictable.

Since the first two seasons were good, there’s a fairly good chance the third season will be good too. However, just as I enjoyed season two more than season one, I’m hoping for season three to be even better than the second.

If you don’t already know by this point, this anime is about a high school where the students train to become superheroes. The main character, Midoriya (Deku), originally didn’t have a power, known as a quirk, but was given the quirk called One-For-All by his childhood hero, All Might.

For now, I have this season of My Hero Academia rated as a 7/10 like the previous season.

Megalo Box

Megalo Box is my early prediction for best anime of the season. This is a futuristic anime about an underground boxer known as Junk Dog who participates in fixed fights. However, Junk Dog hopes to one day fight an opponent who’s actually worthy of his skill.

While this is a boxing anime, it’s not your typical boxing. The fighters use upper body exoskeletons to increase both their own power and the entertainment factor of the sport.

The art and general feel of this anime reminds me of Cowboy Bebop so if that’s anything to go off then this series should be good as well. I currently have Megalo Box rated as an 8/10.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

As someone who’s already watched the first two seasons of Sword Art Online, I’ve decided that despite how I feel about the series, I’m in too deep at this point and so must continue to watch whatever the series puts out. So, that said, I started watching the spin-off Gun Gale online.

It’s surprising how the simple removal of Kirito as the main character of the series was already enough to make Gun Gale Online a better anime one episode in than Sword Art Online. Instead of Kirito, this time around we get Llenn, a young girl who dresses in all pink and uses a pink P90 sub-machine gun which she has named P-chan.

The Gun Gale Online series is about a virtual reality name of the same game in which teams of players fight against each other in a battle royale-style game. Although I’m not completely sold on the idea of the series yet since there hasn’t been any real plot, I do have it rated as a 6/10 and am hopeful that it will continue to be better than SAO.

Comic Girls

Comic Girls is an anime about some girls who draw manga comics as is implied by the title. In this series, Kaoruko Moeta moves into a house for female manga artists to live and work together.

Along with Kaoruko, there is another girl who moves into the house at the same time and is made her roommate. Besides these two girls, there are also two other girls who are already serialized manga artists and have been in the house for some time. These four make up the main cast of the series.

Although I’ve never actually watched it, this series seems like it will be fairly similar to Hidamari Sketch so if you’ve seen that then you can probably imagine what this series will be like. For now, I have Comic Girls rated as a 6/10, but I’m hoping for it to surprise me and be even better than I’m expecting.

My weekly Spring 2018 season reviews start with week 4.
