Boruto Episode 65

Introduction

It’s been two weeks since the last episode of Boruto, and episode 65 “Father and Child” is finally here to wrap up the Boruto movie arc. I actually expected this climax of the arc to be spread over two episodes, but luckily it was fit into one action packed episode.

Normally, a week break from a series is a disappointment for many fans like myself, but I have to say that this episode was worth the wait. Just about every scene in this week’s episode was pure sakuga (dramatically increased animation quality).

After this episode, we’ll probably have to wait roughly another year to get an episode with this much sakuga. The last episode with animation this good was when Sakura fought Shin Uchiha which was about a year ago.

Summary

The episode begins just after Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki devours Kinshiki. By doing this, he drastically increases his own power, appears to gain Kinshiki’s chakra weapon jutsu, and changes his appearance to match his increased power.

As I believe I mentioned at the end of last episode’s review, in the movie version of this fight Momoshiki’s powered up form is red and oni-like (ogre-like). However, this time around he has a much more “godly” appearance with a black, white, and gold color scheme.

As soon as the battle begins, Momoshiki quickly dispatches the four kage who came with Sasuke and Boruto to rescue Naruto. After this, they don’t help out in the rest of the battle and it’s left up to our trio of Hidden Leaf shinobi.

Since most of the episode is simply fighting, there’s not too much to say about it except that Boruto is the secret weapon Sasuke was planning to use all along. At one point, after Naruto and Sasuke have all but defeated Momoshiki, the guy from the Scientific Ninja Research Lab shows up to mess everything up.

He fires off a few jutsu from his Scientific Ninja Tool, which are just absorbed by Momoshiki and temporarily restore his power. One of the jutsu which was absorbed is the Shadow Paralysis jutsu, which is then used against Naruto, Sasuke, and the other kage.

This is finally where Boruto gets to shine, just as Sasuke had intended. Boruto uses his newly “mastered” Rasengan and throws it at Momoshiki who puts his hand up to absorb it on contact. However, the Rasengan disappears before it gets to him, so Momoshiki lowers his guard once again.

Then, just when he least expects it, Momoshiki is hit with the force of the Rasengan Boruto threw. It turns out that Boruto was unknowingly infusing his lightning style chakra into his Rasengan, which caused it to go invisible, because why not?

In the end, Naruto helps Boruto create a Giant Vanishing Rasengan to use as a finishing move against Momoshiki (which works even though Momoshiki could definitely just have absorbed it). While creating the Giant Rasengan, we see phantom images of all the people who helped Naruto along the way, including Jiraiya, his parents, Sasuke, and Hinata (no Iruka, Kakashi, and Sakura?)

After defeating Momoshiki, Boruto is visited by him in a vision and we get some interesting foreshadowing. Momoshiki mentions that Boruto has inherited something from the Ōtsutsuki clan which most likely refers to his Jōgan.

During this same vision, Momoshiki is grabbing onto Boruto’s left arm which was injured by his own Giant Rasengan. While this may not seem like an important piece of information at first, let’s think back to the very beginning of the Boruto series when Boruto confronts an enemy known as Kawaki.

During this encounter, Boruto uses some currently unknown jutsu which causes his left arm to gain tattoo-like markings which appear to have chakra flowing through them. This could potentially be an ability given to Boruto by Momoshiki during their exchange.

Next Episode

While I’m sure the next episode will have some important information about Boruto’s future, it’s unlikely to actually begin the next important arc of the series. We’ll probably see Boruto figure out his own ninja way, or at least start to have an idea of what it is.

In the preview for next episode, we also hear Sarada asking Boruto if he actually wants to become the Hokage like his father. It seems as though Boruto continues to deny wanting to become Hokage one day, and hopefully that’s foreshadowing the future of the series and franchise.

I’d much rather see Sarada become the Hokage after Konohamaru instead of Boruto.

Well, that’s all for this week’s episode. Hopefully now that we’re done with the Boruto movie arc we’ll be able to get back to content that actually has surprises, and not outcomes that I already know. Come to think of it, we never saw what happened to Urashiki Ōtsutsuki.
