Boruto Episode 68

Boruto Episode 68

Introduction

This week we continue on with the filler arc centered around Cho-Cho Akimichi, so I don’t really blame any of you if you decided to skip the episode. If you keep up with these reviews, I’ll be sure to let you know when the series gets interesting again.

That said, the title of this episode is “Super Cho-Cho Kiss Mode!”

Summary

Today I’ll be doing the summary in a bit more of a relaxed way since the episode doesn’t really matter all that much. Basically, Cho-Cho has to fill in for one of the cast members who got injured during the attack on the drama set last episode, and she has a kiss scene coming up.

Of course, since this is Cho-Cho we’re talking about, this kiss scene is the most important thing to ever happen to her, especially since she has a crush on the male lead, Tomaru. However, as you might expect, this kiss scene never actually comes to pass, both on and off-screen, for a variety of reasons.

That’s probably for the best considering Tomaru is an adult and Cho-Cho is like 14 at the oldest.

Anyway, while the genin are protecting Tomaru and Ashina, except Cho-Cho who’s just trying to score a kiss, the jonin, Moegi and Konohamaru, are tracking down the shinobi who previously attacked the set. While they don’t find him, they do determine that it’s either someone from the set, or was at least tipped off by someone on the inside.

Due to how Tomaru and Ashina act around each other, it seems likely that one of them is involved. At first I was expecting Ashina to be the culprit, but as the episode goes on and we see what a terrible person Tomaru is, he seems much more likely despite not having a clear motive.

In the end, Cho-Cho gets fed up with everyone ruining her first kiss and so she attacks Mitsuki (who she clearly would never stand a chance against) and is subsequently restrained by Shikadai’s Shadow Paralysis Jutsu. During this altercation, Cho-Cho is wearing a dress meant for Ashina.

In order to break free from Shikadai’s Shadow Paralysis, Cho-Cho releases her Butterfly Mode and goes back to being her normal size, thus ripping all the seams of the dress and destroying it. Tomaru and Ashina then come to see what all the commotion is and Cho-Cho learns that Tomaru isn’t the person she thought he was.

With her heart broken, Cho-Cho goes back to thinking of the mission as, well, a mission, and says that their job is to protect Tomaru and Ashina. But before we get to the credits, there’s a scene of the shinobi who attacked the set and it appears to be an actual enemy, not someone from the set.

As a final note before moving on to the “Next Episode” section, in the picture above, the dress Cho-Cho is wearing has a small butterfly on her choker. I thought this was a nice touch to add considering her secret technique is called “Butterfly Mode.”

Next Episode

It seems that in the next episode we’ll be getting more actual action than we have over the past two. The Hidden Rain shinobi kidnaps Tomaru, and the genin must go to his rescue. This is likely to be the final episode in Cho-Cho’s mini arc, so we can expect a few things to happen.

First, Cho-Cho is likely going to be the hero because it’s her arc. Second, however, is that we can assume Tomaru is going to learn Cho-Cho’s true identity as she rescues him, likely using her Partial or Full Body Expansion Jutsu.

Remember, although Tomaru saw Cho-Cho in her natural state, he didn’t realize it was actually her, so this is still something that needs to happen. I say “needs to” because this is a common trope and so it’s highly expected to happen.

The third thing we can expect from this episode is that it will likely set up the main part of the filler arc. Cho-Cho’s mini arc is sure to end, but that doesn’t mean the filler is done. In fact, I’ve already seen that the next three episodes after this one will focus on Metal Lee, Boruto, and Mitsuki respectively.

Unfortunately, these three episodes are unlikely to follow the same overarching filler arc involving whoever attacked the drama set. But that brings me back to my third point, whoever attacked the set is most likely not going to be apprehended next episode, but will instead be the filler antagonist.

While I’m calling them the filler antagonist, they may actually be a real antagonist as well, just present during the filler arc as a way to hint at what’s coming up ahead. Kind of like how before the Ōtsutsuki invasion arc we saw Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki multiple times.

At the very least, no matter what happens, we should get an ending to Cho-Cho’s arc, and really that’s all I could ever ask for. I don’t want to have to sit through any more Cho-Cho-centered episodes, and I’m sure most of you don’t either.
