Boruto Episode 69

Boruto Episode 69

Introduction

I know this is being uploaded later in the day than usual, but since my Naruto/Boruto content is the most popular of everything I write, I couldn’t just skip this week or put it off until tomorrow. After all, today’s episode concluded Cho-Cho’s filler arc, and that’s something to celebrate!

In case you missed them, episode 67 and episode 68 were the first two parts of Cho-Cho’s filler arc. However, if you didn’t get around to watching them, I don’t really blame you, but you can just read my reviews of them rather than watching those episodes yourself.

Summary

The title of episode 69 is “Super Cho-Cho Love Upheaval!”

So even after Tomaru told Cho-Cho that he doesn’t like fat girls at the end of last episode, Cho-Cho still has a crush on him because she has bad taste in men apparently. Throughout the episode, Cho-Cho learns to have some self-respect, and a variety of other characters learn lessons as well.

As I somewhat predicted earlier on in the arc, Ashina was behind the terrorist plot on the drama set all along. She wasn’t the shinobi who attacked, but she was the one who hired him, making her the true mastermind. However, she didn’t really have a good reason for doing this.

She simply states that she was jealous that her co-star, Tomaru, was famous simply because of his looks. Ashina wanted to be the one in the spotlight, and since she was being dropped from the drama, she decided that being at the center of this terrorist plot was a great way to get attention.

In the end, she was caught by Konohamaru Sarutobi in a manner more fitting of an episode of Scooby-Doo than Boruto, which is something I predicted would happen as well (albeit more precisely than who the mastermind was going to be).

However, unlike I expected, the Hidden Rain shinobi wasn’t important in any way. I figured he’s be somehow connected to the next group of main antagonists for the series, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. It’s also strange that nobody even mentioned his Hidden Rain affiliation.

After Ashina is captured, some rocks fall off a cliff and Cho-Cho ends up saving Tomaru from being crushed by using her true form and Partial-Expansion Jutsu. It appears she realized the importance of her inner beauty after Mitsuki gave her a pep-talk by using a chip analogy.

But, Cho-Cho wasn’t the only one to learn a valuable lesson at the end of the episode. Ashina and Tomaru also learned that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, not the outside, just like Cho-Cho. And, believe it or not, Mitsuki even learned a similar lesson as well, although in a slightly different way.

Mitsuki had previously asked Orochimaru whether he was his mother or father, and Orochimaru gave him a non-answer by saying he’s been male, female, and something not of this world. However, at the end of this episode Orochimaru is about to give Mitsuki (and us) a real answer, but Mitsuki stops him and says it doesn’t matter either way.

That’s great and all, Mitsuki, but maybe the rest of us wanted to know what Orochimaru was about to say. As an aside, I’m going to continue referring to Orochimaru as male even though he’s probably technically not at this point.

Finally, I want to mention a little something that many people may have missed. At the end of the episode Cho-Cho mentions that she only gives chips to people she likes, and then proceeds to not give her chips to Tomaru. This is expected and isn’t surprising.

However, she then hands the bag of chips to Mitsuki as she’s walking away afterwards. This could be read in two ways. Either she’s acknowledging that it was Mitsuki’s words which inspired her to remember that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, or the writers are trying to make Cho-Cho x Mitsuki a thing.

I’m hoping for the former, but there is precedent for the latter. In one of the early episodes of the series, I’m fairly certain that Cho-Cho makes a comments about Mitsuki being one of the more attractive boys in their class, even if she does think he’s a bit strange.

But, as I said, I’m hoping that Mitsuki’s character doesn’t get paired up with Cho-Cho. I really enjoy Mitsuki’s character so far and it would be a shame to see him weighed down (both figuratively and literally) by a mediocre character like Cho-Cho.

Next Episode

Since this week’s episode was the final piece of Cho-Cho’s filler arc, and we’re not quite ready for another real arc yet, the next filler episode is going to be about Metal Lee. Now, although this is filler, I see this episode as having the potential to be good.

The episode is going to be about Metal learning to get over his anxiety as well as learning the Eight Inner Gates technique from his father, Rock Lee. Might Guy is also going to be making a special guest appearance, so that alone should make the episode fairly decent.

I know it’s a long-shot, but I’m hoping that Metal actually learns to get over his anxiety in this episode or the near future. I get that the Boruto series is trying to teach kids that it’s okay to be overweight, or have anxiety, or be a nerd, or whatever else with their new characters, but I’d rather see characters who are more than just lessons at the end of an episode.

Honestly, if Metal Lee could get over his anxiety and also learn the Eight Inner Gates technique, he’d instantly jump up in my rankings of the Boruto 12. The only real problem is that then he would be exactly like Rock Lee which also isn’t really what I want.

If only they could somehow make him fill a similar role as Rock Lee, yet still be a completely different character, much like how Mitsuki is essentially the Sasuke of the new generation, and yet is actually nothing like Sasuke at the same time.

So, do you think Metal will become a competent ninja? We’ll just have to wait until next week to find out.
