Overview

Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? (Nande Koko ni Sensei ga!? / なんでここに先生が!?) is an ecchi series with 12-minute episodes. However, rather than being a 12-episode ecchi series, I think it would have been better as a 4-episode hentai series with each episode being around 30 minutes in length.

The reason I think this is that the source material is a hentai manga, so obviously the contents of the series fits more in that category than ecchi. And unfortunately rather than slightly changing the events of the series, the anime simply censors them in one of the worst ways possible.

Typically there are two major ways to censor anime. The first is to use objects and camera angles to obscure things from view. This is the preferred method. The other is to use random shadows, beams of light, or steam. This method simply feels lazier to the viewer.

However, some series choose other methods of censorship. Chibi versions of characters’ faces covering things is another fairly popular option, and that’s part of what this series did. Another ecchi from the Spring season, Nobunaga-sensei’s Young Bride, did something similar.

But Nobunaga-sensei’s Young Bride also had an even more censored version which colored the bodies of the characters in question rainbow to censor the whole thing. Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? goes one step further and censors the entire screen when extremely explicit things are happening.

As a pure ecchi series, there are quite a few scenes that are completely censored in each episode. After all, this series follows four high school boys as they continuously get into “lucky pervert” situations with their female teachers.

The general layout of the series is that each of the four boys, and their respective teachers, have three episodes dedicated to each other in a row. However, there’s definitely crossover between them, and the final episode in particular features the entire cast.

Characters

Let’s go through the pairs of students and teachers in the order their arcs appear in. First up we have the best pair, Ichiro Sato and Kana Kojima. Sato is a third year student and Kojima is a Japanese language teacher who is known to her students as Kojima the demon because of her bad attitude.

However, when she’s alone with Sato, and in embarrassing situations, we see a very different side of her. Kojima is actually much more shy and bashful than the persona she puts on in front of her class. Sato meanwhile is what the kids would refer to as a “Chad.”

Next we have Rin Suzuki and Mayu Matsukaze. Suzuki is a second year student while Matsukaze is the school’s art teacher. Despite his massive size and intimidating appearance, Suzuki is actually a timid boy. His only real friend is Sato, whom he knew back in middle school.

Matsukaze is very similar to Suzuki in how she acts. She wants to get closer to her students (in more ways than one apparently), but doesn’t quite know how to express that desire. However, physically she is the opposite of Suzuki due to her small stature.

The third pair is Takashi Takahashi (great name) and Hikari Hazakura. Takahashi is a first year student who looks like a middle schooler. Hazakura is the physical education teacher, as depicted by the fact that she has a tan.

Of all the pairs, this is the only one which attends a different school, though it’s implied that the two schools are related somehow. Since they have always been neighbors, Takahashi refers to Hazakura as Hika-nee. While Sato and Kojima have also known each other for a very long time, their relationship isn’t as open as Takahashi and Hazakura’s.

Finally we have Ko Tanaka and Chizuru Tachibana. Tanaka is a third year student and close friend of Sato (though all of the boys seem to be friends to some extent). Tachibana is the school nurse, so I guess not exactly a teacher, but a faculty member.

In this relationship it’s the student who is the more forceful one, as Tanaka hopes to have a girlfriend by the time he graduates. Tachibana, on the other hand, doesn’t really know how to express her emotions. She’s also typically pretty shameless and sees everything from a logical perspective.

Conclusion

Overall I think Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? is a fairly solid 5/10. It probably would have been a 6 if it was uncensored just because the way it censored the entire screen was a bit obnoxious to say the least. And, as I previously mentioned, I think it should have just been a hentai.

Oddly enough, this series had one of the strongest OP/ED combinations of the season. The OP was great, though I still think I liked the one from Ao-chan Can’t Study! more. The ED, however, was definitely the best of the season.

There were actually at least four different versions of the ED. The teacher in each arc is the one singing the ED for that arc. I couldn’t find the actual ED videos, but here’s the full version of the song with all four teacher versions put together. My personal favorite is the Kojima-sensei version, though I know a lot of people liked the Matsukaze version.

Did you watch Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? If so, which teacher was your favorite? I suppose they all have their perks, but if I had to rank them I’d say Kojima > Hazakura > Tachibana > Matsukaze. Though Hazakura had the worst student paired with her so it’s impressive that she still ranks that highly.
