Okaa-san Online Episode 1

Okaa-san Online Episode 1

The Boy Thought He Was Embarking on a Great Adventure… But, Uh, What’s Going on Here?

Before diving into the first episode of Okaa-san Online, let me first make a few things clear. To start, the actual title of this series is Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, but obviously that’s way too long. For this reason, I’ll generally be referring to it as Okaa-san Online.

Next you may notice that the title of this first episode, The Boy Thought He Was Embarking on a Great Adventure… But, Uh, What’s Going on here?, is also way too long. This is a sign of things to come. Long titles are nothing new for series which begin their lives as light novels, but an episode title of that length is a red flag.

And this brings us to the thing I really wanted to say, this series isn’t good so far. The basic premise has potential, but the execution is pretty bad. At this point in time I can’t guarantee that I’ll continue to do weekly episode reviews for Okaa-san Online just because there may not be enough I have to say about each episode.

But this is where you come in. I’m not going to run a poll for this one, but if you want more reviews of this series click the like button at the end of this post. If you don’t want more of this series, leave a comment with the series you’d like it to be replaced with.

I was pretty excited about an isekai about some guy who was sent into another world with his mom, I really was. There’s so much potential for this to be a great comedy series, but it just isn’t as of now.

Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks

So as the full title of the series implies, Masato Oosuki, Ma-kun’s, mother has a two-hit multi-target attack as what’s essentially her base attack. How she achieved this is simple, she started off life in this new world with two sacred swords which she dual wields.

I should also mention that this is a video game world so Masato and Mamako weren’t reincarnated here. However, it’s not exactly like other MMORPG isekai series we’ve seen before. In SAO the players weren’t physically in the game world, and in Overlord Momonga was somehow summoned into the game world while playing.

Okaa-san online takes on a different angle in that the government, or some game company I guess, made a game and allowed players to “willingly” be sent into it. By willingly I mean they were pushed right through the screens of their computer monitors. It’s unclear how exactly this works.

How they got into this world aside, since it probably won’t ever make sense, Masato and Mamako now each have sacred swords and are sent off to become minor heroes.

Back to what I was saying about Mamako’s dual swords, I assumed they would be fire and ice elemental due to their designs, but that wasn’t the case. Instead the “fire” sword represents the Earth and the “ice” sword represents the heavens. So basically they’re much more powerful than I anticipated.

Masato on the other hand is stuck with a different, yet still technically sacred, sword. His doesn’t have the destructive power of those wielded by his mother, but it does shoot out a long-range attack which had a similar appearance to the fully charged sword from the first The Legend of Zelda game.

What does this Series want to Be?

I’m not convinced that Okaa-san Online really knows what it wants to be as a series. As mentioned, the premise is perfect for a satirical comedy, but unfortunately it just isn’t funny. Other than occasionally commenting on the state of gaming in our world, it doesn’t do anything the other isekai don’t.

I hate to say it, but even That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime had a more original premise than this series one episode in. And no, having the main character be a slime doesn’t count as an original premise.

Neither does having the protagonist’s mom brought into the other world with him, but it’s what you do with those quirks that can become an original premise. For now, Okaa-san Online seems to be nothing more than a standard isekai with a mom involved.

I can’t think of any other isekai anime with family members sent into another world together, but just how is that going to make the series deviate from the standard formula? Although it’s hinted that his mom will get in the way of his harem dream, I don’t believe she actually will.

That could have been a decent twist, but we already know from the cover art that it doesn’t end up that way. It could have even ended up as a reverse harem as his mom gathers male party members much to Masato’s dismay, but again, that’s not what seems to be happening.

Conclusion
