Boruto Character Chakra Natures

Boruto Character Chakra Natures

Now that 123 episodes of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations have passed, I think it’s fair to say we have a decent understanding of the abilities of the characters. Previously I’ve discussed which chakra nature is the strongest, but I didn’t really dive into which characters have which natures.

This was touched on a bit in my ranking the “Boruto 12” post, but that took a look at each of the characters as a whole, not just their chakra natures. And, to be fair, that post is a little bit outdated by this point — though I think I still largely agree with those rankings.

So in this post, I’ll be focusing on the chakra natures of each of the main characters from Boruto. This includes confirmed and unconfirmed natures, how team dynamics can be shaped by the chakra natures within each team, and why some characters have the natures they do.

Boruto Uzumaki

Boruto Uzumaki is an interesting one (not really) because he’s the only character whose chakra nature affinity has been confirmed. I think in Naruto: Shippūden we had Naruto’s, Sasuke’s, and Kakashi’s affinities confirmed, but for this generation, we just have Boruto’s.

His affinity is for the Lightning nature, but he’s also able to use both Wind and Water as well. His Wind nature likely comes from his father, as that was the only nature Naruto was naturally able to use. Likewise, he probably gets his Lighting nature from his mother, Hinata.

What we don’t know is why he’s able to use the Water nature. Chakra natures aren’t necessarily passed down between generations, but from what we’ve seen throughout the entire franchise so far, this is usually the case. So, as for his Water nature, that’s just something he happened to manifest despite neither of his parents having it.

But let’s go back to Boruto’s affinity for the Lightning nature for a moment. It actually is quite interesting that this would be his affinity considering we have Sarada on the team as well — though it’s not like only one member per team can have any one affinity.

And, what you’ll notice about Team 7 in particular is that every single member of it is able to use the Lightning nature. Also, the only basic elemental nature they don’t have on their team is Earth.

Sarada Uchiha

Sarada Uchiha is almost a carbon copy of Sasuke from the original Naruto series. The chakra natures she’s confirmed to use are Fire, Lightning, and Yin, just like Sasuke. However, while we knew Sasuke had an affinity for Lightning, we don’t know if that’s the case for Sarada.

In fact, I’d say that Sarada’s affinity likely isn’t for lightning since we don’t see her use it all that much. Her affinity is probably either for the Fire nature, or she may not have a particular affinity. However, it was just potentially revealed in Boruto episode 123 that you can have an affinity for Yin or Yang natures.

So, where do Sarada’s chakra natures come from? First, her Lightning nature is almost certainly a direct result of this being her father’s affinity. However, the Fire and Yin natures are a bit different. She has these two natures specifically due to her bloodline — the Uchiha clan.

All Uchiha clan members are able to use the Fire nature, and her Yin nature is directly related to her Sharingan. All Sharingan users have the Yin nature.

But, there is one more nature Sarada may have although it’s unconfirmed: the Yang nature. Her mother, Sakura, is able to naturally use four different natures, one of which is Yang. This is the nature used when Sakura strengthens her body to supernatural levels, which is something Sarada can do as well.

Mitsuki

Surprisingly, Mitsuki is the member of Team 7 with the least chakra natures. He’s only able to use Wind and Lightning — or at least those are all that are confirmed. If Mitsuki were to have an affinity it would definitely be Lightning as he uses that much more than Wind.

But something we have to keep in mind is that Mitsuki is an artificial human — a homunculus. This means that his chakra natures weren’t necessarily passed down to him from his parent, Orochimaru. But this then brings up the question of where his natures came from in the first place.

If you were to create an artificial ninja, wouldn’t you want to give them all five basic elemental natures at the very least?

What’s also interesting is that Mitsuki isn’t able to use the Yin nature. This may actually be a direct result of him being a homunculus, but all the other “snake ninja” in the franchise have been able to use Yin. Perhaps later on in the series, we’ll see Mitsuki manifest this nature as well.

I also want to point out that his jutsu which turns his arms into snakes doesn’t appear to have a nature associated with it. I thought this might be attributed to the Yang nature, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Shikadai Nara

Shikadai Nara’s chakra natures are fairly straightforward. He knows both Yin and Wind natures, which makes complete sense based on who his parents are. And, it was with Shikadai in episode 123 that Yin and Yang chakra nature affinities may have been confirmed.

This actually makes a lot of sense. We already knew that someone could have an affinity for any of the five basic elemental natures (Water, Fire, Wind, Lightning, & Earth), but what about those who specialized in Yin or Yang? Shikadai is someone who really specializes in Yin despite being able to use an elemental nature as well.

The Yin nature, of course, is used for the Nara clan’s Shadow Paralysis jutsu. This is the main jutsu Shikadai uses, but also really the only Yin jutsu he knows. He knows other Yin jutsu, but they’re mostly derivatives of the Shadow Paralysis jutsu.

So because he’s not pulling out his Wind nature jutsu all that often, we can assume that if he were to have any affinity at all, it would likely be for Yin.

Chōchō Akimichi

As with her teammate, Shikadai, Chōchō Akimichi’s chakra natures are pretty straightforward. She has the Yang nature from her father and the Lightning nature from her mother. Also like Shikadai, the elemental nature she can use doesn’t appear to be what she would have an affinity for.

We rarely see Chōchō use Lightning style techniques, and the Akimichi clan’s signature Expansion jutsu uses the Yang nature. I don’t really think I need to go more in-depth about Chōchō so let’s move on to the far more interesting, final member of Team 10.

Inojin Yamanaka

Inojin Yamanaka is pretty strange. Despite the fact that we’ve seen him use multiple jutsu, he actually doesn’t have any confirmed chakra natures. But, there are two natures we can be almost certain that he does have and three more which he might.

First of all, we know he can use both the Mind Transfer and Super Beast Scroll jutsu. We can also infer that these jutsu use the Yin and Yang chakra natures respectively — this is based on how the jutsu work and what natures their other users have.

So from all that, it’s a pretty safe bet that Inojin is able to use both the Yin and Yang natures despite this not actually being confirmed. But, I don’t want to say that it’s a guarantee. There’s always the (extremely low) chance that the Mind Transfer and Super Beast Scroll jutsu are both natureless.

Then we have the other three chakra natures he might have: Earth, Water, and Fire. Normally I wouldn’t say that someone can use chakra natures just because they’re secondary natures their parents use, but Inojin is an exception. Both of his parents can use Earth, Water, and Fire.

If it was a combination of natures from his parents that would be one thing, but since they both know all three of those natures I find it pretty suspect for Inojin not to know them in some capacity as well.

Denki Kaminarimon

Denki Kaminarimon either has no chakra natures or they simply haven’t been revealed yet. He’s only been shown to use two jutsu throughout the series thus far, and both of them are natureless. But I’m going to make a prediction right now and say that Denki will eventually manifest a chakra nature.

Denki’s last name, Kaminarimon, comes from the word “Kaminari (雷)” which means thunder. This is why you’ll notice a lot of things around the Hidden Leaf Village have the word “Thunder” in their names. So based on this, I assume Denki will eventually use the Lightning style.

And I get it, Thunder and Lightning aren’t the same thing, so why should Denki use the Lightning style just because his last name has thunder in it? Well, the reason is because what we call Lightning style is actually Thunder style. Whenever it’s shown in the series it’s written with the kanji for thunder, not lightning.

If Denki ever does manifest the Lightning nature, that’s going to be his affinity if he has one at all..

Iwabee Yuino

Iwabee Yuino is the only member of the “Boruto 12” who is able to use the Earth nature. Coincidentally, that’s the only nature he’s able to use. But, despite only knowing one nature, I have high hopes for Iwabee later on in the series — Earth style is pretty cool after all.

In the Hidden Leaf Village, most Earth nature users are pretty limited in what jutsu they know how to use. It’s almost always some variant of the Earth Wall jutsu. And that’s why I think Iwabee has the potential to be interesting. Since he specializes in Earth-style jutsu we should get to see a lot more variety from him.

I don’t particularly see Iwabee learning other chakra natures, but if he did I think Yang could pair well with his Earth nature and fighting style. Either way, if he has an affinity for any nature it has to be Earth-style since that’s all he knows how to use at this point.

Metal Lee

Metal Lee is, in some ways, the most obvious of all these characters when it comes to chakra natures. He simply has none just like his father. And you shouldn’t expect him to ever manifest any throughout the course of the series. The fact that he can’t use ninjutsu is his entire gimmick.

Yes, he can use things like the Eight Inner Gates which involves chakra, but that chakra has no nature. And even when someone who can use chakra natures like Might Guy uses the Eight Inner Gates, it’s still used with natureless chakra.

Because Metal Lee is the final member of Team 5, that also means that Iwabee’s Earth nature is the only chakra nature the team has (confirmed). But, they aren’t the only team to only have one chakra nature across all three of its members.

Team 15 from the anime series Boruto Naruto Next Generations
Team 15

Wasabi Izuno

Wasabi Izuno is another character who has no confirmed chakra nature, but I don’t think that means she can’t use any. For now, her signature Cat Cloak jutsu is listed as natureless, but I think it could actually be Yang nature due to the way in which it works.

Yang is the nature of physical energy and is used for techniques that enhance the user’s physical capabilities. This is exactly what the Cat Cloak jutsu does. It envelopes Wasabi in a cloak of chakra which enhances her physical capabilities such as speed and strength,

But, it’s also always possible that this jutsu is similar to the Eight Inner Gates. That too uses chakra to enhance the user’s physical capabilities and is natureless.

There’s also always the possibility that Wasabi will learn a chakra nature later on. She’s a fairly minor side character so it’s not like she’s really had much screen time to develop in. Other than the Yang nature, I think Wind could be one she may use later on.

Sumire Kakei

Sumire Kakei knows the Water nature and this is likely what her affinity is for. I’m not just saying that because it’s the only chakra nature she knows, but also because she seems to be quite proficient at it. Remember an affinity just means you can learn jutsu of that nature more quickly, and Sumire seems to exhibit this.

While someone like Boruto is basically a prodigy because he can already use three chakra natures, Sumire is someone who I think has a lot of room to grow. Aside from the fact that she seems to have an affinity for the Water nature, she appears to be the kind of person who would excel at anything she tries.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sumire being able to use three or more chakra natures later on in the series. Earth and Yang styles don’t really seem to fit her, but I could definitely see her learning Yin, Wind, Lightning, or Fire in addition to her Water style.

Namida Suzumeno

Finally, we have Namida Suzumeno who is actually one of the more interesting characters in the series due to her signature jutsu. I get it, her Crying jutsu is annoying, but we don’t actually see sound-based jutsu all that often. Unfortunately, sound-based jutsu other than genjutsu are all natureless.

And Namida doesn’t know any genjutsu. If she learns some sound-based genjutsu later on in the series then we’ll know that she’s able to use the Yin nature, but for now, we don’t.

However, what we do know for now is that she’s able to use the Water nature — though I wouldn’t exactly say she has an affinity for it. To be perfectly honest, Namida doesn’t seem like someone who would have an affinity for any chakra nature. But, maybe she’ll be hooked by Urashiki Ōtsutsuki and we’ll find out.

Either way, for now, Team 15 is only confirmed to know Water nature across all three of its members, much like Team 5 with Earth nature.

Bonus Character: Konohamaru Sarutobi

As a bonus, let’s take a look at the chakra natures of Konohamaru Sarutobi. The first thing that makes him impressive is that he’s able to use four of the seven basic chakra natures. These are Fire, Wind, Lightning, and Yang. However, it’s less impressive when you remember that his grandfather could use all seven.

Of these four natures, we don’t actually know which is his affinity, but I’m going to guess anyway. It’s probably not Lightning or Yang. However, Fire and Wind are definitely options. Wind mainly because he’s Naruto’s pupil and Fire because that’s the nature of the Hidden Leaf Village.

Of these two I’d really rather it be Fire considering his namesake. He’s named after the Hidden Leaf Village which resides within the Land of Fire. Supposedly the ninja of the Hidden Leaf are good at using the Fire nature, though we tend to only see this with the Uchiha clan.

An argument for his affinity being Wind nature is that the only natured Rasengan he uses is the Wind style Rasengan. On the other hand, that’s the only Wind-style jutsu we’ve seen him use, and he’s used quite a few Fire-style jutsu.

Conclusion

Well, that’s it for all the chakra natures the characters from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations have right now. I’ll probably update this post if more natures or affinities are eventually revealed.

Also, you may have noticed that all of these characters that know any natures at all only know basic natures. While Sarada’s Sharingan is a Kekei Genkai, none of these Boruto characters have Kekkei Genkai chakra natures. However, there are other characters who do, such as Shinki.
