Helos and the Tybur Family

Attack on Titan: The Final Season episode 64 is one manga readers have been waiting for. But, I’m actually looking forward to the next episode even more because we’re finally going to see the Warhammer Titan. I’m not counting that as a spoiler because it’s literally included at the end of this episode.

Anyway, in this episode, we got to see Willy Tybur recount the secret history of the world known only to the Tybur and Fritz families. As a reminder, the Tybur family are the true rulers of Marley and the Fritz family are the rulers of Paradis. By all accounts, they should be enemies — but as it turns out, they aren’t.

As we’ve already known for a while, King Fritz vowed never to use the Founding Titan’s powers again. All of his descendants are also bound by this vow, which is why the titans have remained on Paradis for the past 100 years. However, since Eren isn’t a member of the Fritz family, that vow doesn’t bind him.

Back before the Eldians were banished to Paradis, the Tybur family that holds the Warhammer Titan sided with Marley. King Fritz then made a deal with them to end the fighting. He would exile himself and his people on Paradis Island and the Tybur family would create a false narrative to feed the rest of the world so that they would stay away from the island.

This false narrative came in the form of Helos, a fictional Marleyan hero who supposedly fought alongside the Tyburs. So, why does Willy reveal that the hero Helos is fake? Because the peace that the Tyburs and King Fritz agreed to is no more. A true threat to the world has awakened — Eren Yeager.

Though, it is ironic that Eren only became a threat because his homeland was invaded. And the reason his homeland was invaded is that the Tyburs allowed the world to continue believing that the Paradis Eldians were a threat.

Old Friends

While I’m sure the highlight of the episode for a lot of people is going to be the appearance of Eren’s Attack Titan, I much prefer the conversation between Eren and Reiner. Last week, I wrote about how Reiner is a victim of war and suffers from PTSD because of it. That was on full display this week.

We basically got to see Reiner go through the five stages of grief within a matter of minutes. He goes from being in denial about Eren being in Marley to accepting that he’s probably about to die before Willy’s speech is even over.

Honestly, all three characters in this scene are great. Eren’s all calm and collected because he knows that he has his enemies right where he wants them. All of Reiner’s past trauma is combining into a glorious mental breakdown. And Falco is piecing together the situation on the fly and realizing the role he played.

Going back to Reiner for a moment, though. I love how despite his mental breakdown just moments before, he immediately turns to protect Falco when Eren begins his transformation. Reiner may be mentally weak, but he still always puts others before himself. He listened to Eren so he wouldn’t kill all the people in the building above them and he’s willing to sacrifice himself to save Falco.

But there is one complaint I have. I get that Eren’s eye color is green, but I really don’t like his control over the Founding Titan being depicted through glowing green eyes. I would have rather his eyes become silver like all the previous Founding Titan wielders. The manga even depicts his eyes as silver, such as on the alternate cover of volume 30.

The glowing silver eyes we’ve seen before in the anime are way more intimidating. They really make the Founding Titan wielders look godly/otherworldly.

Declaration of War

Little did Willy Tybur know that what was meant to be his declaration of war against the Paradis Eldians would actually turn into Eren’s declaration of war against the rest of the world. Also, in case you didn’t notice, Eren ripped Willy in half. So R.I.P. Willy (unless he’s the Warhammer Titan).

Something we should keep in mind regarding this scene is that Eren planned his declaration of war to line up with Willy’s specifically because he knows (most) of the truth. I don’t believe he knows everything since he’s not a member of the Fritz family. But he still does have many of their passed down memories thanks to the Founding Titan.

When you consider what’s found within those memories, it’s not hard to see why Eren would consider the Tybur family to be his enemies. They could have spent the past 100 years assuring the rest of the world that the Paradis Eldians would never be a threat again as long as they were left alone — and they didn’t.

Also, they control Marley, the country that got Eren’s mom killed with their attack. So it’s personal as well.

But, how successful is Eren’s surprise attack really going to be? A large contingent of Marley’s military is onsite, as well as the Armored Titan assuming he wasn’t knocked out or killed. The Jaw and Cart are in a hole, so they’re probably out of the fight, but the Beast is still nearby.

It would seem like Eren’s in a bad spot. However, remember that he has allies as well. We haven’t seen them yet, but he did mention that his letters got to them. If Armin is there, that means Eren has the Colossal on his side. One transformation from Armin could theoretically level the entire square.

When you think about it, the Colossal Titan really is overpowered. Just look at how much it took to take down Bertolt last season.

Conclusion
