Attack on Titan Episode 67

I avoided writing about the visuals of this season last week. So to make up for that, let me start this week’s review by mentioning how great the visuals were this week. Obviously, there was barely any titan content, which helps since they’re mostly CGI these days. But the quality of animation we got in this episode was on par with the best parts of the previous seasons.

Now, I’m not going to lie to you and say that the rest of the season will look as good as this episode did. After all, this was a very big episode. But what I want you to take away from this is that the animators who are working tirelessly on this series are great and are doing an amazing job considering the schedule.

Also speaking of the schedule, it should be mentioned that there’s going to be a part two of this final season. Attack on Titan generally covers about 1.5 chapters per episode (this episode was just one chapter — 105). And this season has covered 15 chapters in 8 episodes. The manga is still 31 chapters ahead (and counting) with 8 episodes remaining in this “season.”

Moving on to what I assume everyone wants me to talk about: Sasha is dead. That’s right, the girl with the best character design in the entire series is dead, and Gabi is to blame. There is one better (male) character design that will be revealed shortly, though. So you have that to look forward to.

Honestly, there’s not much to really say about Sasha’s death other than if it wasn’t her it probably would have been Connie. In my mind, the two of them are very similar. But Sasha was the one to die simply because she was already set up as Gabi’s enemy earlier on.

When will the Fighting End?

Regardless of who it was Gabi killed, the death of one of the core Scouts is very important for the character development of everyone else present. Obviously, Sasha’s death hits the Scouts hard — in particular, Connie, Jean, Armin, and Mikasa.

And this manifests itself in a few different ways. One of them being that the rest of the Scouts blame Eren’s actions for the deaths of their comrades. I believe it was Hange who mentions that this whole attack on Marley wasn’t planned. Eren selfishly went off on his own, and the Scouts had to go retrieve him or risk losing the Founding and Attack Titans.

Another way we see Sasha’s death affect the Scouts is through how the old and new Scouts react. The old Scouts just want the war and killings to end, regardless of which side the losses are on, and this is what they’re fighting for. Meanwhile, the new scouts are out for blood and even wanted to throw children out of the airship.

On the other side, this episode gave us some great insight into and development of Gabi’s and Falco’s characters. Gabi doesn’t hide the fact that she’s driven by vengeance. However, something new that we learned about her is that she’s willing to dismiss the hardships of others if it fits her agenda. For example, she brushes off the genocide of the Paradis Eldians because she didn’t see it happen herself.

Meanwhile, Falco is developing into a very different character from Gabi. He was there when Eren and Reiner were talking about their shared past and how the two of them are actually the same. Falco understands why Marley was attacked and also seems to believe that a peaceful resolution is possible if the Paradis Eldians are simply left alone.

Yeager Brothers

You probably have a lot of questions regarding why exactly Zeke appears to be working with the Scouts. Well, let’s take a look at what was said and see if we can piece anything together. Zeke mentions that they now have both the Founding Titan (Eren) and a titan with royal blood (himself).

So from that, we can assume that both the founding titan and royal blood are necessary for whatever their plan is. However, we also know that if someone with royal blood wields the Founding Titan, they’re bound by the first king’s non-aggression pledge, so it’s not as easy as having Zeke eat Eren to take the Founding Titan from him.

This is exactly why Willy Tybur was so afraid of Eren. Eren doesn’t have royal blood, so he’s an unpredictable threat with the Founding Titan.

Also, I guess a refresher on Zeke’s lineage might be important. Zeke is Eren’s half-brother. They’re both the sons of Grisha Yeager, but while Eren’s mother was Carla Yeager, Zeke’s was Dina Fritz of the royal family. This was all explained back in episodes 57 and 58.

What was also explained in episode 58 is a key piece of information relevant to why Zeke and Eren are teaming up right now. Back then Eren theorized that if he came into contact with a titan of royal blood, he would be able to use the power of the Founding Titan.

Now the only question is: What common goal do Zeke and Eren share that involves utilizing the Founding Titan? Eren obviously wants revenge. But Zeke has been on Marley’s side this entire time, so what about him?

And as a final comment, I’d like to share with you that while rewatching episode 57, I noticed that Grisha’s comrade who was fed to the titans rather than being transformed into one himself had the surname Grice. That’s Falco’s surname.
