That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Episode 30

The Future Hero

I guess I’m starting this review of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Episode 30 off by pointing out the obvious foreshadowing of Chloe becoming a future hero. To be fair, that’s kind of been hinted ever since she was introduced back in season 1 — with her looking very similar to Shizu and all.

Also, when Hinata showed up, I thought for a second that it was actually an older Chloe since she looks like her as well. Just imagine it: Chloe grows up to become the next hero and then travels back in time to slay her own mentor Rimuru before he can become too powerful.

Obviously, Hinata and Chloe aren’t the same person. That was just my initial thought when Hinata showed up right after Rimuru and Ranga foreshadowed Chloe’s future.

But, why is Chloe’s role as the next hero important right now? Because it means that Hinata is not going to be the next hero to follow in Shizu’s footsteps. And that’s important because Hinata probably views becoming the hero as effectively her birthright.

Hinata was raised by the previous hero and probably wants to carry on her master’s will. But, if she’s not destined to be the hero, that means her character can be used in other ways. Just as Shizu was introduced into the series to grow Rimuru’s character both literally and metaphorically, I see Hinata playing a similar role.

I’ll say more about Hinata later. But for now, I also want to point out that Chloe will likely ally with Tempest in the future. And if she then becomes the hero, that will add a lot of legitimacy to Tempest as a nation.

Attack on Tempest

The weakest part of the episode was definitely the part that took place within Tempest. I’m just not very interested in most things involving Tempest, though. I’d much rather explore the other regions of the world than focus on Tempest.

But, anyway, I’m not really sure how to feel about the whole barrier that weakens monsters thing. Without that barrier being in place, I think the oni alone could have stopped the invasion of Tempest. Benimaru and Shion probably could have wiped out the otherworlders and the entire army.

And because of that, the introduction of an anti-monster barrier feels like a bit of a cop-out. Either introduce antagonists who actually pose a threat or don’t. Doing it halfway just makes it less interesting. I don’t really care about a fight between Hakurou and an otherworlder if Hakurou is forced to fight at 10% of his normal strength.

It’s one thing if a character is injured in some way and so they can’t fight at full power. But introducing a barrier that weakens specific characters is a cheap way to create that.

And I’m even fine if a character is “pulling their punches” for a reason like Rimuru often does. We rarely see Rimuru fight at full strength, but that’s because he’s intentionally not revealing everything he has up his sleeves. Mind games like that add to a fight, not take away from it.

Another issue I have with this whole attack is that I don’t really feel like anything is at stake. Even if Tempest loses, Rimuru is just going to show up and fix everything. Nobody is going to die. You could say maybe Hakurou will in order to add to Gobta’s character development. But I don’t even see that happening here.

The Beauty Makes Her Move

The fight between Rimuru and Hinata was quite good. This was probably the strongest part of the season so far. However, I still would have preferred for it to look a bit better. It uses a lot of simplified character models and “rough” animation to add to the speed and power of the characters. Sometimes this works, but I don’t think it did here.

Going off character model isn’t an issue despite what some people believe. But when you go off character model and then also don’t have the smoothest animation, it starts to look messy.

Anyway, I’m not really here to complain about the animation of this fight. I don’t actually care about the animation all that much. What I care about is how this fight is going to affect Rimuru’s character going forward. Based on the fact that Rimuru is about to use his gluttony skill on a person, I think it could get interesting.

From what I remember, gluttony is the skill Rimuru got from combining his slime skill of absorbing things with the starved skill he got from killing the Orc Lord. So, if he eats Hinata with that skill, I don’t think there’s going to be much of her left. Or, that’s what I would say if Hinata wasn’t the top knight of a kingdom.

She’ll probably end up inside of Rimuru, come face to face with Veldora, see how powerful Rimuru really is, and get spat back out. I don’t know how Rimuru is going to survive getting stabbed for a seventh time by Hinata’s sword. But that’s not really an issue since he’s the protagonist.

And while it’s possible that Hinata could die here, will she? It’s actually hard for me to say. I didn’t think Shizu was going to be out of the series so fast either, so the same thing could happen with Hinata. And unlike with Shizu, this one wouldn’t have been a mercy killing.

Conclusion

What do you think of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 episode 30? Will Chloe become the next hero? How do you feel about the rigged fights in this episode? And will Hinata die to Rimuru? I think if his skills weren’t sealed he would have absolutely destroyed her.
