Barriers and Souls

I think for the first time throughout this entire series, I’m actually looking forward to the direction it’s going in. Even when Rimuru’s city was attacked, I didn’t really care about what was going to come next because I assumed that nobody important would die. But, TenSura surprised me.

Well, it almost did. But then it was revealed that Rimuru is actually going to resurrect them.

Gobzo dying was surprising. But I think it’s fair to say that Shion’s death was the real shock. Remember how I had been complaining about how useless Shion’s character was for a few weeks? Well, ironically enough, once she got killed off she actually gained a use.

Obviously, Rimuru mourned for all of his fallen citizens. However, I don’t think he would have chosen to go down the path of becoming a Demon Lord if not for Shion. Shion was one of his closest retainers since her job was to literally carry him.

Now, while I liked that the series was willing to kill off characters in order to give Rimuru a push, I’m not so keen on the whole revival thing. The idea that barriers can keep souls contained is fine, I guess. But I’m not so sure about it being used in this way.

Also, exactly how the resurrection works wasn’t explained. Do people who are close to a Demon Lord automatically get revived? Does the Demon Lord get one wish? Does the Demon Lord gain access to hidden and forbidden magic? We don’t know.

How Not to Become a Demon Lord

For a few weeks now I had been mentioning that Rimuru might become a Demon Lord. I thought Milim had told him back in season 1 that he had the ability to become a Demon Lord. Maybe I’m misremembering though since Rimuru seemed somewhat surprised to learn that in this episode.

Anyway, enough about Rimuru for now. We finally got some backstory for Milim, so that’s what I want to write about. I don’t know about you, but as soon as the fairytale began I knew it was about Milim. I’m pretty sure she had already been labeled as a dragonkin or something.

But, it was nice to have that definitively stated now that one of her parents is in fact a dragon. That helps to explain why she’s considered to be the strongest of the Demon Lords. On top of that, she’s also the first of the (current) Demon Lords, which is a bit more interesting now.

Milim never set out to become a Demon Lord, and it’s unknown if there were any Demon Lords before her. What we know is that she took revenge on the kingdom that killed her pet dragon (which is a bit weird for her to have considering one of her parents was a dragon). And through slaughtering 10,000+ humans, she became a demon lord.

This act allowed her to revive her dragon, but it was a soulless monster at this point and so she ended up sealing it. Now, I thought for a moment that the dragon she sealed may have been Veldora, but we already know it was the Hero who sealed him, not Milim. Maybe Milim’s dragon will become a plot point later on.

And the last thing I want to mention about becoming a Demon Lord is: Why did the other Demon Lords become them? Aside from Milim, there’s Clayman, Carrion, and I think one other that was named that I’m forgetting. But, did they each have people they wanted to revive as well? Or did they want something else?

Episode XXXII: A New Hope

Rimuru’s choice to commit genocide just to revive about 50-100 of his citizens is a little bit extreme if you ask me. I mean, I get it. He wants revenge, he needs to kill 10,000 people to revive his friends, and if he doesn’t crush Falmuth and the Church, his people will continue to be in danger.

But at the same time, committing genocide seemed like a choice he didn’t even have to think about. I wonder how far beyond killing the 20,000 soldiers marching to his border he’s going to go. Is he going to slaughter everyone in those two kingdoms? Probably not, considering then there would be no reason to make Youm the King of Falmuth.

Killing 20,000 people is still kind of a big deal though, even if they are soldiers coming to attack your country. If this was a war and 20,000 enemy soldiers were killed in it, that would be one thing. But this is Rimuru walking up to the army and slaughtering them all single-handedly.

There is a seed of doubt in the back of my mind. I’m actually interested in seeing how Rimuru goes about this slaughter and how it changes him as a person. And I kind of like the fact that he’s made up his mind and is going to follow through with this heinous plan. He’s not backing down this time as he normally does.

But, I think there might also be a way out for Rimuru. And I’m really hoping it doesn’t come to it.

In this episode, we saw Rimuru kill Myulan for a second by removing the artificial heart Clayman had implanted in her and replacing it with one of his own. Does that count as actually killing Myulan? Rimuru said it did. So what if he does that to the 20,000 soldiers? What if he kills them without killing them?
