To Your Eternity Episode 6

Fushi’s New Form

The first thing I want to get out of the way in this review is that there is no review of Episode 5. There were no reviews last week, and I’m not going to retroactively make up for them. So when I refer to the previous review, I mean Episode 4, but when I refer to the previous episode, I mean Episode 5.

With that said, the previous episode was both expected and unexpected. I expected that March would die because that would “immortalize” her in the same way the boy from Episode 1 was. However, I wasn’t really expecting March to be the only one to die.

I thought that each arc of the story was going to be relatively self-contained. However, that assumption seems to be wrong. We’re moving into a new arc now, and yet there are characters and entities that are carrying over, such as Pioran and the Yanome.

Also, when I say that I expected March to be “immortalized,” I don’t mean that I expected Fushi to take on her form as he did. I believe it was in my review of Episode 4 that I mentioned that Fushi will likely have four forms at the end: Human (the boy), wolf (Joaan), bear (Oniguma), and an owl we’ve only seen in the ED.

I thought that Fushi would simply carry on March’s memory and will forever; not that he would be able to transform into her. But, since he can, I do like that Fushi’s March form has a distinct purpose — she’s not just another human form that functions the same.

When he’s in his March form, Fushi is much lighter weight, smaller, and proficient in climbing. This adds to Fushi’s arsenal of different forms for different situations.

Fushi’s Creator

From the start of the series, I assumed the narrator (voiced by Kenjirou Tsuda), was supposed to be some sort of deity. We knew that he was the one who created Fushi, and that’s it. But now, this mysterious character has actually appeared within the series.

It’s possible that he’s still a deity of some sort — after all, he did create an immortal life form. But, I was expecting more of a hands-off type of deity who stuck to being the narrator. This is clearly not the case. He’s going to be hands-on if this episode is anything to go by.

With all of that said, we still don’t really know anything about this mysterious person. I doubt what we saw in this episode was his real body considering he was see-through and rose out of the ground. But at the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was considering he can also do things like stop time.

In this episode, we also learned that there’s some greater goal Fushi’s creator is trying to achieve through Fushi. Apparently, they’re going to “preserve this world.” I’m not sure what that means, but maybe it involves Fushi gathering information on all sorts of people and creatures so that they can be replicated.

Using the word “preserve” makes it sound like Fushi’s creator has a noble cause. But, I’m not really convinced by that. On the other hand, you could say that by using the word “preserve,” he’s actually stating his intent to stop the world from moving forward.

And considering what Fushi’s creator looks like, I’m going to guess that he’s not a good guy. He reminds me of another character voiced by Kenjirou Tsuda, Jigen from Boruto. He too would probably claim that he has some noble goal, but at the end of the day, he’s just a terrorist.

Fushi’s Goal

Another reason why I think Fushi’s creator is going to be an antagonist (the main antagonist) is that his goals probably aren’t going to align with Fushi’s. The problem with creating a sentient creature is that there’s no guarantee it will share your ideology.

From what I understand, Fushi’s goal is simply to gather experiences and knowledge. But, as we’ve seen, the experiences and knowledge he gathers imprint themselves on him. So while he’s still seeking new experiences and knowledge, he now has a course to follow.

Let’s take a look at the two examples we’ve had so far. First, the nameless boy says that he wants to reach “paradise” where there’s plenty of food. Fushi then achieved this by making his way to Ninannah. And now that he’s “become one” with March, he wants to “grow up” by learning to be a human.

Why I think all of this matters is that as Fushi grows and experiences more things, he’s going to develop his own identity. It’s going to be a mixture of all the people and creatures he’s interacted with, but that mixture will be unique to him.

So, what happens when his creator comes along and tries to push Fushi in a different direction? I don’t think Fushi will respond very well to that. I’m not sure if he’ll have a truly individual personality. But, he’s already well on his way to being able to formulate and express complex thoughts.

If Fushi has an experience and from it, he learns that he should do “X,” he’s going to prioritize that over someone else telling him to do “Y” instead. He’ll have no attachment to “Y.” Meanwhile, “X” will be what his instincts are telling him to do.

Conclusion
