Series Overview

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? (Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari / たとえばラストダンジョン前の村の少年が序盤の街で暮らすような物語) is a generic fantasy adventure anime.

Obviously, I need to start this review by bringing attention to the absurd title. You can tell right away that this was adapted from a light novel due to the length. But also, I’m not sure why the English translation turned the title into a question.

While starting a question with “suppose” is technically correct, it’s one of those quirks of the English language that doesn’t really make sense. When you tell someone to suppose something, you’re not asking a question. There may be an implied question, but the base sentence is a statement.

It just feels so wrong for the title of a series to be written like this. It’s one of those situations where you go, “That’s technically the right translation, but nobody would ever actually say that.” So already, just from the title, this series annoyed me.

Anyway, the rest of the series isn’t any better than the title. It’s an extremely generic fantasy anime about an overpowered protagonist who doesn’t realize how overpowered he is. And it’s not just his own strength that he’s oblivious to.

Just like any generic protagonist, he’s also oblivious to the fact that the harem of girls who are constantly around him actually all like him. What an interesting development that I’ve never seen before.

If you like anime with no personality of its own, then Last Dungeon (that’s what I’m going to call it from here on out) may be the perfect anime for you.

Main Characters

Lloyd Belladonna is the protagonist of Last Dungeon. As you may have assumed from the title of this series, he originally comes from a town located near the “last dungeon.” I’m not really sure why this world has a set progression order for dungeons, but it does.

This means that when Lloyd leaves his village to join an academy to become a knight, all of the people and enemies he encounters are much weaker than what he’s used to. This gag persists throughout the entire show remains unfunny the entire time.

Alka is one of those 500-year-old loli characters (I don’t know how old she actually is). She serves as the chief of Lloyd’s village near the last dungeon and has a habit of casting spells on people, mostly her student, Marie.

Marie is a mage who Lloyd is sent to live with by Alka when he sets off from his hometown. She finds her former master, Alka, extremely annoying and wants Lloyd for herself because he’s good at doing chores that she doesn’t want to do.

Selen Hemein is, I guess, the female lead of the series. This is a harem series, but I think it’s fair to say that Selen is the main girl. She becomes obsessed with Lloyd after he accidentally breaks the curse she was under by touching her.

Riho Flavin is another member of Lloyd’s harem. I don’t quite remember how she becomes involved with him, but I think it had something to do with the fact that he was nice to her. Riho is probably the best girl of the series, but that’s not saying much.

The last true member of Lloyd’s harem is Phyllo. She likes Lloyd simply because he’s stronger than she is and wants him to train her as her master.

As Generic as can Be

While I wouldn’t call Last Dungeon a bad anime, it’s certainly not a good anime. If you were to take every generic trope from anime like this and roll them into one, Last Dungeon is what you would get. And it doesn’t play on those tropes like something like KonoSuba does.

The art is pretty average, and the animation isn’t anything special either. And while I want to say that the character designs are pretty good, I don’t think I can. They definitely have some detail, but upon closer inspection, even the designs are generic for the character tropes they represent.

I actually don’t remember the OP, ED, or any OST songs from this series either, which isn’t a good sign. But, to be fair, I actually forgot this anime existed at all (despite it just airing 3 months ago) until I scrolled through my completed anime list to look for something to review today.

Although Last Dungeon is tagged as an adventure series, it really doesn’t have any aspects of an adventure. There’s no place to which the characters are traveling. The series does feature multiple locations, but the characters move between them freely without being bound by plot progression.

If this was a true adventure series, then you might expect it to follow Lloyd as he made his way back to his hometown with his new companions. But that’s not what happens. And there’s no focus on traveling between locations. In one episode they’re in one town, and in the next, another.

Overall, Last Dungeon isn’t going to give you anything you can’t get from another series, but better. Everything about this series is the definition of average, which makes it less memorable than even straight-up bad anime. At least it’s not as painful to watch as those are.

Conclusion

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town? is, unsurprisingly, a 5/10. I really can’t point to anything it does poorly, which is why I haven’t rated it lower. It just doesn’t do a good job at anything and there’s nothing unique about it.
