My Hero Academia Episode 111

Trumpet vs. Spinner

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 111 was another good episode. The main focus of this week’s episode was Shigaraki. But we also got a small amount of Spinner content, which I wasn’t expecting. I kind of assumed he and Mr. Compress would be left out.

I mean, when you think of the League of Villains, you probably only think of Shigaraki, Himiko, Twice, and Dabi. Spinner and Mr. Compress are effectively the side characters of the League of Villains.

Speaking of Spinner, I’m sure his quirk was mentioned before and I just forgot or missed it, but I didn’t realize he’s supposed to be a gecko. I thought he was just some generic lizard-guy and that maybe his quirk was tangentially related to his appearance.

Since Spinner’s quirk really does just seem to allow him to do things geckos can do (climb on walls), I don’t see him getting a power-up here. Twice, Himiko, and Shigaraki all became stronger, and I’m guessing Dabi will too. But probably not Spinner (or Mr. Compress).

The Liberation Army member Spinner is fighting against goes by the code name Trumpet. His quirk, Incite, allows him to boost the power of his followers with his voice, just like Belo Betty from One Piece.

Even before Trumpet’s quirk was officially revealed, I assumed that’s what his quirk was based on what we saw of him in Episode 110. But, what I don’t understand about Trumpet is how he was able to transform his watch into his Sevens Loud helmet.

That item transformation clearly has nothing to do with his quirk. And it didn’t look like a technological transformation either. A quirk was clearly at play in some fashion.

Re-Destro’s Stress

As I predicted last week, Re-Destro’s quirk isn’t simply a quirk that allows him to boost his physical abilities at will. It has a pre-requisite. I mentioned that perhaps he powers up more based on how many of his subordinates were defeated, but we now know that’s not quite the case.

Instead, Re-Destro builds up stress, which can then be converted into power. Of course, his subordinates being defeated would be a cause of stress for him, but their defeat isn’t what directly powers his quirk.

I’m not really a huge fan of this quirk, to be honest. Linking Re-Destro’s power output to something as arbitrary as his stress level doesn’t make for an interesting mechanic unless his stress levels are fluctuating throughout the fight. As it stands now, he just gets more powered up as the fight progresses without any real meaning behind it.

Additionally, his quirk seems to have some other random abilities tacked onto it. It would be one thing if he was simply able to make his body larger, stronger, and more durable. But that’s not all Re-Destro can do. He also has an energy ball ability.

This ability is called Stress Output Burden, and for now, it’s unclear if this is a natural ability of the Stress quirk or if it’s the product of another quirk combining with the Stress quirk at some point in time. It seems like the latter, but we simply have no idea.

It looks like this ability converts Re-Destro’s stress into pure energy, which can then be directed at his opponents. Fine, I’ll begrudgingly accept that. But why does this ball of energy also pull other objects in as if it has a gravitational field of its own? It just doesn’t make sense.

Tenko Shimura: Origin

As we know, Tomura Shigaraki’s birth name was Tenko Shimura. I don’t know exactly when that was first revealed, but it’s at least been stated a few times over the previous couple of episodes. I think it had been mentioned earlier than that, though.

Anyway, through Shigaraki’s backstory, we learn quite a few interesting things. First, he was originally thought to have been quirkless because his quirk didn’t manifest until relatively late. And, he’s an example of someone who has a quirk that appears to be completely random and isn’t passed down genetically.

Second, we found out that Shigaraki is actually the grandson of All Might’s mentor. She was first shown back in Episode 24 and has made multiple appearances in flashbacks since then. When we see her picture in Shigaraki’s flashback, her identity isn’t a mystery.

Something we don’t yet know about Shigaraki is what he was told about his grandmother’s death. I’m going to assume that in next week’s episode, we’re going to see that One-for-All told him that All Might was the one who caused his grandmother’s death.

But, if my memory is correct, during the battle between All Might and One-for-All, it was mentioned that One-for-All was the person who killed All Might’s mentor. So basically, One-for-All has been lying to Shigaraki this whole time.

And, one last piece of new information we got was that Shigaraki was the one who killed his family. Maybe you guessed that would be the case, but I think this is the first time it’s been confirmed. Previously, we could have assumed that they died in an accident caused by a hero, which would have been the catalyst for Shigaraki becoming a villain.

Conclusion

What do you think of My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 111? Will Spinner’s quirk get an upgrade? If so, how do you think it will be upgraded? Also, do you like Re-Destro’s quirk? And do you think One-for-All gave the quirkless Shigaraki his quirk? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Sevens Loud is the same as Curious’s gear. Gear made by Re-Destro’s company. Scenes establishing Re-Destro and his company were cut from the anime, but they are a life style equipment company who made custom items, clothes, and support items for various people and their quirks. (Like Re-Destro’s suit that won’t break no matter how much he increases his size) They recently moved into creating Hero support gear, like the stuff the Seltzer Villain that Shoto and Bakugo fought had. Gear like Sevens Loud and Curious Flattener also fall into that category.

I don’t believe. Young Shigaraki or any of the rest of his family know anything about Nana Shimura and her death. Remember that she abandoned Kotaro out of fear and him getting in danger.

Lastly on Re-Destro’s quirk. Using Burden is just an ability he has trained with his quirk, to separate the power he can create from his body. And it’s a very powerful ability, because Stress will be caused by pretty much any Negative Emotion, fear, anger, frustration, sadness. As he also explains he bottles up his stress (Which has caused his receding hair line) so he has a large well spring to covert at the start of a battle as well.

Also just a few episodes ago, we got a flashback of All for One telling young Shigaraki that he caused the deaths of his family, when he awoke a random quirk mutation.
And when All for One fought all Might he was the one who informed All Might that Shigaraki was Nana Shimura’s grandson.

    1. I already knew Shigaraki was All Might’s predecessor’s grandson. But I couldn’t remember if that was spoiled for me or if it was actually revealed before now so I never brought it up in any of the earlier reviews this season.
