Mushoku Tensei Part 2 Episode 3

Mushoku Tensei Part 2 Episode 3

Life in a Dedoldian Prison

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Part 2 Episode 3 started off with Rudy’s description of the prison cell he found himself in. I really enjoyed this part of the episode, especially because at first I didn’t remember how the previous episode had ended.

I did remember that Rudy was captured by the beastkin before he got to the punchline about his free accommodations being a prison. But, it was still good nonetheless. Regardless of how you feel about Rudy being horny all the time, you have to admit he has a pretty good sense of humor.

And then, just when I thought the comedy for the episode was done, we were introduced to Rudy’s cellmate. At first, I thought he was a beastkin as well. But then I realized he wasn’t speaking their language and actually didn’t have animal features.

I can’t say I was expecting Rudy to acquire a prison kouhai. That said, I don’t dislike that he did. I doubt Geese is going to be a recurring character going forward, but I wouldn’t mind him sticking around at least until Dead End leave the Dedoldian forest.

For anyone who’s seen One Piece, specifically Dressrosa (which I’ll get around to reviewing at some point), you probably instantly thought of Bartolomeo when Geese started calling Rudy “senpai.” I know I did.

I can’t be bothered to check if Geese and Bartolomeo actually have the same voice actor or not. I haven’t heard Bartolomeo in a while, so maybe they sound less alike than I’m thinking and it’s just their speech patterns that are the same. But, I’m going to pretend it’s the same voice actor until told otherwise.

Smuggler’s Raid

Alright, so last week I mentioned that one of the smugglers who was killed by Ruijerd looked somewhat like Gallus. Obviously, that wasn’t Gallus. But, it turns out I was on the right track when I questioned why the smugglers would task Rudy with freeing trafficked beastkin.

It turns out that they had Rudy do that so the beastkin warriors would go after him and the children, leaving Dedoldia unprotected. Basically, they gave up five (six) beastkin children in order to acquire many more directly from the village. It was a good strategy in theory but also left a lot up to chance.

For example, there was no guarantee that Ruijerd and the children would have gotten far from the smuggler’s den before the beastkin warriors arrived. If the beastkin arrived before Rudy and Ruijerd set off for the city, they would have all been back in Dedoldia before the attack took place.

Rudy had already been in the Dedoldian prison for an entire week before the attack happened. If Gallus really wanted to succeed, he would have launched his attack at the same time that the beastkin warriors were attempting to rescue the children, not a week later.

I also find it odd that Gallus was so willing to allow Rudy to either join him or go free. Sure, having Rudy as an ally would be good. But the alternative being to just let him go doesn’t make sense. The risk that Rudy is either going to come after Gallus with his allies or that he’s going to tell someone else is too high.

Gallus knows Rudy and the other members of Dead End are strong, even if he believes Ruijerd to be a fake Sperd. It’s better to eliminate Rudy while he’s alone. I get that this is what he attempts to do in the end. But it really should have been his original plan.

Dead End Heroes

I’ve heard that the author of Mushoku Tensei has said he doesn’t plan for Rudy to ever outgrow his horniness. However, I’m hoping that doesn’t mean he never grows as a character at all.

I’m not expecting a lot of growth between the end of Part 1 and where we are now in the story. But it would have been nice to see Rudy at least consider some of his past experiences and think about how he could make a difference this time around.

When Gallus drags the beastkin girl past him, Rudy just thinks about how he’s not as strong as Ruijerd, who would risk his life to save a child he doesn’t know. Instead, I’d have liked to see Rudy think about what happened last time he chose not to save a child when he had the chance — they were killed by a giant snake.

If Rudy’s goal is to change how people feel about Sperds through the heroic actions of Dead End, he needs to start acting heroically himself. The only reason he ended up attacking Gallus this time around was because the sacred beast attacked first.

Even if Rudy attempts to save someone and fails, that would be a step in the right direction. I’m not expecting him to become your typical shounen battle series protagonist who always saves everyone. All I’m asking is that he eventually learns to take action even if the outcome is uncertain.

Don’t get me wrong, though — I loved seeing the aftermath of Rudy’s poor choice with the demon children adventurer group at the end of Part 1. But if Rudy doesn’t learn from that, it’s a lot less impactful.

Conclusion

What do you think of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Part 2 Episode 3? Do you want Geese to stick around, or is he annoying? Why do you think it took so long for Gallus to attack Dedoldia? And do you think Rudy will ever become more confident in his decision-making? Let me know in the comments.
