Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 7

Is Nezuko Too Overpowered?

Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 7 responded to my main concerns from the previous episode. In my review of Episode 6, I said that the ease with which Tanjirou and Nezuko were able to overpower Daki was a problem for the series.

If he hadn’t forgotten to breathe, Tanjirou likely would have defeated Daki. And Nezuko did defeat Daki, even though she didn’t kill Daki. If a member of the Upper Six was that easy for them to defeat, then they’re clearly already strong enough to fight Muzan himself, right?

Well, that’s where Episode 7 comes in. It turns out that Daki isn’t actually all that strong after all. Tengen easily decapitated her and even claimed that she must not really be the member of the Upper Six he’s looking for because she’s so weak.

Of course, as we learn later in the episode, there’s more to Daki than meets the eye. But, if we’re talking about just Daki’s strength, I’d say she’s probably on the same level as a Lower Six member.

So, with that in mind, is Nezuko overpowered? I have to say that she’s not — yet. I do believe that Nezuko could put up a pretty good fight against a true Upper Six member in her full demon form. After all, we saw just how insane her speed, power, and recovery capabilities were.

However, we also saw that in this form, Nezuko becomes more primal. She’s unable to stop herself from attacking humans and is therefore unpredictable. Tanjirou wouldn’t want to unleash her like that if anyone else was around.

Basically, while Nezuko is very strong, her power comes with drawbacks that limit her ability to make full use of that strength.

The Upper Six Difference

Despite Daki’s weakness, she’s still technically a member of the Upper Six. And this was made clear when she didn’t die after being decapitated by Tengen. This was probably my favorite part of the episode because it really showed us the difference between the Lower and Upper Six.

After decapitating Daki, Tengen pays her no attention. He even stands with his back to her at first, showing that he doesn’t view her as a threat. And he makes numerous comments on how she’s weak and should just disappear already.

However, we then see his demeanor change when he realizes that despite her head being in her lap, she’s not disappearing. That’s when he begins to take Daki seriously. Even before Gyuutarou appears, Tengen recognizes that something isn’t right.

Based on our encounters with two Upper Six members so far, I think the decapitation isn’t going to be the only way to kill demons going forward. Daki survived being decapitated. And it seems really hard to decapitate Akaza, so maybe he’ll have to be killed another way.

Of course, we do know of other ways to kill demons already. Being exposed to direct sunlight is one of the earliest ways to kill them that we learn. And Shinobu uses a toxin derived from wisteria flowers to kill demons since she’s too weak to decapitate them.

Also, it should be pointed out that Nezuko was decapitated in this episode and survived. I think all of this is pointing to the Upper Six demons perhaps being strong enough that other methods of killing them are going to need to be employed.

Though, I’m predicting that decapitation is still going to be the mode of death for both Daki and Gyuutarou.

Twin Demons Gyuutarou and Daki

Despite the title of this section, we don’t actually know if Gyuutarou and Daki are twins. We know they’re siblings, with Gyuutarou being the elder. But, what I mean by twin demons here is that they’re two demons in one, as Gyuutarou says.

What does that mean, though? To me, it simply means that their demonic power is shared between the two of them. And as we saw, this also appears to mean that they can share a single body as Gyuutarou came out of Daki’s back.

Why is all of this important? Because I think it explains why Daki didn’t disappear upon being decapitated by Tengen. In order to truly kill Daki and Gyuutarou, you probably have to decapitate both of them at the same time — or at least before the other can reattach their head.

And, that’s also why I think these two will still die by decapitation despite how I think that method of killing demons is going to be less successful against the Upper Six.

Considering their whole gimmick seems to be that they both need to be killed at the same time, it sets up a perfect tag-team takedown. We have 4 demon slayers on-site, and I’d love to see them work together to kill Daki and Gyuutarou at the same time.

Also, I should point out that the reason Daki is considered a member of the Upper Six is because of Gyuutarou. From what we saw, he seems worthy of that title. And since he and Daki are two demons in one, Daki gets the title as well.

I’m interested to see how the two of them fight together. My guess is that Gyuutarou is going to be the offensive one with his blood sickles while Daki is going to play defense with her obi.

Conclusion

What do you think of Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 7? Now that we know Daki’s strength relative to a true Upper Six member, do you still think Nezuko is overpowered? And what do you think of Gyuutarou’s character design? I’m not a fan of it.

  1. Remember you need to decapitate them using a special sword to kill Demons. Daki’s decapitation of Nezuko would not have killed her. Daki’s plan was to absorb her into the Obi then put her out in the sun.

  2. On Gyutaro’s desing. I really like it, one of my favorite demon designs. His unnatural emaciation makes him look delightfully creepy.
