Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 237

The Mobile Fortress

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 237 surprised me by having good animation. I really wasn’t expecting that at this point in the arc. I figured there might be some good animation at the end of the arc. But not right now.

This isn’t a sakuga blog, though, so let’s move on from the animation. In Episode 236, Boruto, Kawaki, and Buntan infiltrated the Funato mobile fortress. And in this episode, Kagura, Hebiichigo, and Kyohou joined them aboard the ship.

With the gang all here — or, half the gang — they turn their attention to destroying the giant scientific ninja tool aboard the ship. It’s a massive chakra cannon that Tenma attempts to use to sink the ship Mitsuki, Sarada, Team 5, and the evacuees are aboard.

I have a few issues with this massive chakra cannon. The first is more of a question, though. Where is all the chakra used for the cannon coming from? That’s a lot of chakra it fired. I can’t imagine that it drains that much chakra out of those aboard the ship every time it needs to fire.

The second issue is that it doesn’t seem like the chakra cannon can aim very well. Unless the entire structure it’s in rotates, which there’s no evidence for, it can only fire at what’s in front of the ship. If it turns, it’ll just end up shooting the structure that houses it, as we saw.

And the third issue is that the weapon is clearly visible when charging. This, combined with the fact that the cannon itself can’t be aimed without turning the entire ship, means it’s fairly easy to dodge the shots. Just put a flap on the end of the barrel that hides the light and only opens when it’s fully charged.

Tenma Funato’s Jutsu

Last week, I was wondering what kinds of jutsu Tenma Funato would be able to use. He’s a pirate in the Land of Water, so it would make sense for him to at least use Water Style jutsu. But, we actually didn’t see that from him at all.

Surprisingly, Tenma didn’t use any nature transformations. I still feel like he must be able to use Water Style jutsu, though. This isn’t the last we’ve seen of Tenma. He’s definitely coming back, and I think we’ll see more of what he’s really capable of at that time.

However, that doesn’t mean he didn’t use any jutsu during this fight. He used a summoning jutsu to retrieve a weapon from a scroll. And if that’s really the only jutsu he can use, then I guess he’s just a pirate version of the strongest Hidden Leaf shinobi, Tenten.

The weapon Tenma uses is actually pretty cool, though. It’s designed to look like a giant crab claw and has two blades that make up the pincers. Don’t tell Isari, but I think Tenma’s weapon is way cooler than the living weapon Isari uses.

And since Tenma’s weapon is based on a crab, I think it’d be cool if the rest of his abilities were as well. Maybe he can summon giant crabs. We saw a Giant Crustacean summon from Nagato (Pain) as part of his Animal Path. So we know these summons exist.

The Giant Crustacean also used a Water Release jutsu called Wild Bubble Wave that basically sprays foam. Perhaps Tenma will be able to use jutsu like this one as well to complete the crab theme.

Or, what’s more likely, is that Tenma won’t be able to summon crabs or use bubble jutsu at all.

Reduced Sentences

For the past few weeks, I’ve been theorizing about why Buntan, Hebiichigo, and Kyohou would have stayed behind in the prison when Shizuma broke out. It now seems most likely that they simply wanted to stop being involved in criminal activity. And that’s pretty boring.

Well, I suspected that Buntan wanted that since she seems to be relatively normal. And as I’ve mentioned before, Kyohou doesn’t really seem capable of thinking for himself so he’s just a follower. But I never expected Hebiichigo to simply want to stop being a criminal.

At the end of the episode, though, we see Buntan, Kyohou, and Hebiichigo celebrating the fact that the mission was a success. And specifically, they’re celebrating because this means their sentences should be reduced. I don’t think we would have gotten that scene if they had ulterior motives.

With that said, there’s still one problem that might get in the way of their sentences being reduced: Kyohou. As we saw in this episode, he goes absolutely berserk when he sees blood. He attacks everyone who goes near him, regardless of whether they’re friend or foe.

First, I’d just like to say that he seems like a terrible pick to be one of the New Seven Ninja Swordsmen. What was Shizuma thinking when he invited Kyohou to be a part of the group? He’s a liability. He’s just going to end up hurting one of the other New Seven Ninja Swordsmen or being hurt by them.

But the reason Kyohou is a problem is that the next episode preview implies that he goes berserk again — this time on the evacuee ship. It’s going to be difficult to call the mission a success if Kyohou is rampaging among the evacuees who were supposed to be rescued as part of the mission.

Conclusion

What do you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 237? Do you think we’re ever going to see Tenma use additional jutsu? And do you think Kyohou should ever be released now that we know how unstable he is? Let me know in the comments.
