Boruto Episode 62

Boruto Episode 62

Introduction

Before we begin, you may notice that this Boruto episode review is being posted on Thursday instead of Friday. This is because tomorrow Figure Friday will be coming back! Next week’s Boruto episode review will also be on Thursday for the same reason.

Episode 62 is titled “The Ōtsutsuki Invasion” and as you would expect, it’s about the Ōtsutsuki clan invading the Hidden Leaf Village. This arc, like the chunin exam arc before it, was included in the Boruto movie, but it has some slight differences this time around.

For one, in the movie there were only two members of the Ōtsutsuki clan, Kinshiki and Momoshiki, but in the series version there’s a third named Urashiki. Apparently Urashiki was originally supposed to be in the movie, but was cut for some reason.

Summary

The episode picks up where episode 61 left off with Boruto being disqualified from both the chunin exam and being a ninja in general, as well as the arrival of Kinshiki and Momoshiki. After this, the stadium is destroyed by the pair and everything descends into chaos.

It’s just after this point that we get a scene of Mitsuki which I found to be the most intriguing part of the episode since most of the rest was previously known from the movie. Mitsuki decides to use his sage jutsu in order to save Boruto from Momoshiki, but Urashiki appears and takes him out before he can do anything.

At this point, we only saw a glimpse of Mitsuki’s sage mode before Urashiki neutralizes it, but it didn’t appear to be snake sage mode since we already know what that looks like from Orochimaru and Kabuto from Shippūden.

Instead, Mitsuki has a green mask-like mark around his eyes and a single horn on his forehead. His eyes also change, but not into the reptilian slit pupils we associate with snake sage mode.

After taking down Mitsuki, Urashiki comments on how that power is dangerous even to the likes of the Ōtsutsuki clan, which suggests that Mitsuki doesn’t have a standard sage jutsu. This, combined with the horn he grows, makes me think he has some sort of Six Paths sage jutsu which is what was needed to seal Kaguya.

Last week I mentioned that I thought Urashiki was going to be the primary antagonist of a sub-plot involving the rest of the genin while Boruto, Sasuke, and the five kage all fight Kinshiki and Momoshiki. However, we saw Urashiki fight against Gaara and Chōjūrō this week instead.

After his fight with those two, Urashiki uses his Rinnegan to escape into another dimension, so it’s now unclear to me what his role is going to be, but I’ll talk about that more in the “Next Episode” section.

Going back to the main plot, Naruto, with the help of Sasuke, protects the village from some devastating attacks thrown around by Momoshiki. While Naruto would normally be able to deflect and destroy the attacks with ease, it would cause extreme damage and mass casualties so he has to stay on the defensive instead.

At the end of the episode, we see Naruto decide to sacrifice himself in order to save everyone else, leaving Boruto in Sasuke’s hand(s). Up until this point, Boruto had never really understood how strong his father was, and this is going to be the turning point for him as a character.

Next Episode

Anyone who’s watched the Boruto movie already knows what happens next as far as the main plot is concerned, so I’ll generally skip over that here. However, it seems as though next episode is mainly just going to be a bunch of setup for the expedition to save Naruto.

What I’m more interested in is finding out more about Mitsuki and Urashiki. We’ve seen Mitsuki’s sage mode as well as how Urashiki’s jutsu works, but we still don’t have much information on either of them. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll get any answers regarding those two in the next episode.

Instead, Sasuke will most likely reveal his strategy to the remaining kage and Boruto will bother him to the point that he agrees to let him come on the expedition as well. We’ll probably get to see Sasuke help Boruto develop his wind style Rasengan as well.

But how will the inclusion of Urashiki factor into the rest of the arc? Will Gaara and Chōjūrō mention their battle with him during the planning for the expedition? Will Urashiki be a part of the battle against Kinshiki and Momoshiki?

Urashiki refers to the other two as his superiors which makes me think he’ll simply be a sub-plot antagonist, but the fact that he ran away to another dimension after fighting two of the kage suggests that he’ll still be around after Kinshiki and Momoshiki.

I’m hoping that he’s not going to be the next main antagonist after Momoshiki, however, because I kind of just want the Ōtsutsuki clan arcs to be over with. I want to move on to new antagonists and possibly an all new antagonist organization completely separate from anything in Shippūden.
