Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 263

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 263

Special Instructors at the Academy

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 263 was a decent episode. The main thing that was good about it was that we finally learned what jutsu Hana-sensei uses. But, before I get to that, let’s go over the rest of the episode.

At the start of the episode, Hana invites some special instructors to the class. These special instructors are going to teach the students about ninjutsu. And, of course, the special instructors are Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki of Team 7. They also don’t really teach the kids about ninjutsu so much as they demonstrate ninjutsu.

But, it’s during this part of the episode that we learn our first bit of information about Hana. Boruto shows off the Rasengan. Sarada shows off the Fireball jutsu. And Mitsuki shows off the Snake Lightning jutsu. According to Hana, these jutsu are all flashier than what she can do.

The Rasengan being flashier than something Hana can do makes sense. It’s an advanced Ninjutsu that only a few have mastered. The Fireball and Snake Lightning jutsu are pretty basic, though. Since Konoha is in the Land of Fire, the Fireball jutsu is fairly common.

As for Snake Lightning, Mitsuki’s the only person we know of who uses it. But, nothing about it implies it’s difficult to use. So, we can infer that Hana can’t use the Fireball or Snake Lightning jutsu due to her chakra affinity. She can’t use Fire Release or Lightning Release.

With that said, Hana does show us that she can use Wind Release. She uses a Wind-style jutsu to knock some of her students back when they get too close to Mitsuki’s jutsu. And, if she can only use Wind Release, that may explain why her jutsu aren’t “flashy.” It’s kind of hard to see wind.

The Candy Bar Feud

In this episode, we also get the name of another one of Kawaki’s classmates, Soul. Unfortunately, we don’t know what clan Soul comes from. But, we do know that she’s a huge fan of Might Guy. So, it’s possible that she wants to master taijutsu.

Also, speaking of Might Guy, he should be the hero of more young shinobi. Madara Uchiha himself declared Guy the strongest in Naruto: Shippūden Episode 421. Think about that. Guy came closer to defeating Madara than even Naruto and Sasuke combined.

Anyway, Boruto comes up with a plan to teach the students about sharing. He buys enough food for half of them and then says they need to fight over it. But, the lesson they’re supposed to learn from this is actually that they should split the food and share it. They didn’t learn this lesson.

Instead, the students break into two factions. On one side, led by Ehou Norimaki, are the students who took the competition too seriously. And on the other, led by Soul, are the students who think anything not barred by the rules should be allowed. Technically, Soul’s faction is correct.

The real problem of the episode is that nobody explains the lesson to the students. Everyone’s focused on trying to get Ehou and Soul to make up. But, the easiest way to do that would be to explain to them how they both misinterpreted the lesson. It’s not about the competition or the rules.

If someone explained to them that the lesson was about teamwork, they’d see they’re both in the wrong. By fighting with each other like this, they’re doing the opposite of what good shinobi would do. Hana does eventually say this in a roundabout way when she mentions Guy.

Hana-sensei’s Jutsu

It’s finally time to reveal what Hana’s jutsu actually is. And, the answer may surprise you. I actually didn’t immediately realize what her jutsu was. It took me a moment to figure out what was going on. But, if you put all the clues together, it becomes clear.

So, first of all, we know Hana can use Wind Release. That’s the only chakra style we can confirm that she knows. Keep that in mind.

Second, as Kawaki realizes, the cherry blossom petals Hana scatters are paper, not real. When he mentioned this, my first thought was of Konan. If you don’t remember, Konan was the second-in-command of the Akatsuki. Her signature jutsu all involved paper and origami.

So, that’s it, right? Based on the fact that Hana scattered paper flower petals, she must use some sort of paper jutsu. Well, not so fast.

If you go back and watch the scene of Hana scattering the petals, you’ll notice two things. One is that she’s using Wind Release to scatter the petals. And the other is that she’s not producing an infinite amount of paper petals with a jutsu. The petals already exist.

As Hana blows the petals out of her hand, you can see the pile getting smaller until all the petals are gone. So, the petals aren’t actually part of her jutsu. She went out of her way to make the petals beforehand. Her jutsu is simply the Wind Release she’s using to scatter them.

At the end of the day, Hana doesn’t have some special jutsu. At least, she never uses one in the episode. And she’s probably not a Jōnin, so we shouldn’t expect her to be super strong. Even Iruka Umino, Naruto’s Academy teacher, is only a Chūnin.

Conclusion

What do you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 263? Are you surprised the kids knew about Team 7 but didn’t realize Kawaki is a member? Do you think the Kakashi or Minato trading card is rarer? And, did you realize that Hana’s jutsu was just Wind Release? Let me know in the comments.
