Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 267

School Festival Play, My Old Friend

I have mixed feelings about Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 267. On one hand, it’s setting up for a school festival play. But, on the other, we got to see Himawari’s class dress up as the Legendary Sannin.

It’s only been 2 days since I last brought up my hate for school festival and play episodes in anime. I promise I won’t go on another rant about it in this review. But, there’s no guarantee that it won’t happen next week if the play actually happens.

Let’s stay positive this week by focusing on the costumes. I may not like play episodes. But, I enjoyed seeing the Academy students dressed up as famous shinobi (and summons) from the past. That’s way more interesting than having characters dress up as a princess and prince. And the costumes looked good, too.

Kae Yukiwari and Eiki Fūma playing Tsunade and Jiraiya isn’t anything special. It’s not like Kae and Eiki really have anything in common with Tsunade and Jiraiya. But, if not Kae, who else in the class would play Tsunade? Even though she’s not a great match, she does seem like the best option.

The problem with having an Academy student play Jiraiya is that none of them are like Jiraiya at all. There’s no class clown. Eiki’s way too serious to be Jiraiya. And even after Ehō Norimaki swaps in to play Jiraiya, he’s too serious, as well.

I like the castings for Minato and Orochimaru, though. Obviously, Himawari being cast as Minato makes sense since she’s his granddaughter. And Osuka being Orochimaru is great since she was originally the villain of the Academy. I also didn’t realize how much I needed loli Orochimaru until I saw Osuka playing him.

Sōsha’s Big Scoop

We already knew that Sōsha Amino worked for the Academy newspaper. But, the truth is that Sōsha is the Academy newspaper. Nobody else works on it but her. And now that we’ve seen what the newspaper looks like, that makes a lot of sense.

First of all, the newspaper is a tabloid. In Sōsha’s defense, she does verify her stories before she runs them in the newspaper. But, the stories she runs are still character assassination pieces. For example, at the start of the episode, she runs a story about Eiki reading Make-Out Paradise.

And second, her newspaper is literally a single page drawn in crayon. Should we even consider it a newspaper? I have a hard time referring to a flyer as a newspaper. Also, there aren’t many academy students. How long will it take for Sōsha to run an unflattering story about all her classmates?

Anyway, Eiki tells Sōsha that he has a story for her “newspaper.” Apparently, he heard that Kawaki is a Genin who infiltrated the Academy. Ever since hearing that, he’s kept an eye on Kawaki and finally saw evidence of this rumor being true — a headband.

I assumed that Eiki wanted to sic Sōsha on Kawaki so that everyone would forget about the story about him. That seemed logical. But, no. Eiki wants Sōsha to reveal Kawaki’s secrets so that Kawaki will be expelled. With Kawaki out of the way, Eiki can protect Kae.

Eiki and Sōsha did almost succeed in revealing Kawaki’s secret. But, luckily for Kawaki, Osuka saved the day. Of course, this now means there’s another person who knows Kawaki is a Genin. But, Osuka doesn’t realize that Kawaki’s on a mission. So that’s fine.

The Anonymous Tip and the Assassin

Let’s get into the interesting stuff now. Who was the one who gave Eiki the note about Kawaki’s secret? And who was the assassin at the end of the episode? Are they the same person? Or are they different, unrelated people?

My immediate guess is that the person who made the note and the assassin aren’t related. It just doesn’t make much sense for them to be. Why would a real assassin use such a roundabout way to remove Kawaki from the situation? No real assassin is going to give Eiki that note and hope it works out.

With that in mind, the note seems to have come from one of the Academy students. But, which student would know Kawaki’s secret and want him out of the way? It shouldn’t be Himawari, Kae, Eiki, or Osuka. I think it’s safe to rule those 4 out.

Neon, Harika, Mimi, Ehō, and Yuina also seem very unlikely. Neon, Harika, and Mimi are from established families in the village. And I just have a feeling it’s not Ehō or Yuina. So, that leaves Sōsha, Soul, Suzu, Ran, Kande, Konashi, Doseki, and Kura.

Sōsha could have been using Eiki to get evidence for her story. Kura and Kande are a bit suspicious to me. And I’m pretty neutral on Soul, Konashi, and Doseki. It would surprise me if it was Suzu and Ran since they’re so generic. For now, I’m going to guess that it’s Sōsha.

But, what about the assassin that went after Kae? Wouldn’t it be a good twist if Hana-sensei was the assassin? The fact that everyone views her as a weakling means they lower their guard around her. She’s kind of the perfect candidate — as long as it’s someone we know.

Conclusion

What do you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 267? Would you change any of the castings for the play? Does Sōsha’s “newspaper” count as a real newspaper? And who do you think the people are who sent Eiki the letter and tried to assassinate Kae? Let me know in the comments.
