The Ancient Magus’ Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm Review

The Ancient Magus’ Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm Review

The Wild Hunt

The Ancient Magus’ Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm is a 3-episode OVA. It takes place after Season 1 and leads into the college arc of Season 2. But, as an OVA, it’s by no means a mandatory watch.

If the content of this OVA was important for Season 2, that would have been pretty annoying. Why? Because these three episodes aired over the course of an entire year. The first one released in September 2021 and the last in September 2022. That’s not exactly the best release schedule if viewers need to watch.

Anyway, this OVA features the Wild Hunt. These are spirit horsemen who travel the lands followed by death and destruction. They’re a natural force that usually doesn’t cause problems — they clear the brush for new life to spring up. But, this time, disaster (lightning) strikes.

The Wild Hunt from the anime OVA The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm
The Wild Hunt

During a summer storm, lightning struck the stone within which the Wild Hunt reside. This caused pieces to break off, which left the Wild Hunt separated from their leader. Without their leader, overstayed their welcome and trampled the forest. So, naturally, it’s up to Elias and Chise to save the day.

The thing is, Elias and Chise aren’t exactly the main characters of this OVA. It would be better if they played a bigger role. But, the real main character is some random kid from London named Gabriel. I’ll discuss Gabriel more a bit later in this review.

Chise’s main role in the OVA is to be the canary in the coal mine. I guess because she’s a sleigh beggy, she’s more susceptible to the Wild Hunt’s negative energy. So, throughout these three episodes, we can keep track of the Wild Hunt situation by how Chise feels.

Reuniting a Boy and His Horse

For most of the OVA, the Wild Hunt isn’t around. They’re scattered throughout the forest and don’t appear as a unit until the last episode. The only members of the wild hunt who are around are “Evan” (the leader) and his horse. Though, even those two are separated.

Reuniting “Evan” and his horse is the main plot of the OVA. “Evan” is with Gabriel. And “Evan’s” horse is with Chise and Elias. Before going further, I should explain why I’m putting “Evan’s” name in quotes for those who haven’t seen the OVA.

“Evan” doesn’t have an actual name. He’s simply the leader of the Wild Hunt. And, by leader, I don’t mean that he’s in charge. There’s a king of the Wild Hunt who stands above him. By leader, I mean he literally leads the pack as they travel. That’s why they need him.

"Evan" and his horse from the anime OVA The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm
“Evan” and his horse

The name “Evan” comes from Gabriel. It was inconvenient for the boy not to have a name. So, Gabriel names him after the knight in one of his favorite stories. At the time, however, he doesn’t know that “Evan” actually is a knight.

Now, reuniting “Evan” and his horse is something that needs to be done. If it’s not, England is going to become a wasteland. For Chise and Elias, it’s also more personal. Chise’s condition will only worsen if the Wild Hunt doesn’t move on. But, Gabriel doesn’t view it the same way. He doesn’t want “Evan” to leave.

Gabriel suffers from some pretty severe asthma. That’s why his parents moved from London out into the country where the air quality is better. But, this isn’t something Gabriel wanted. He doesn’t have friends out here. That is until he met “Evan,” a friend he can play with despite his condition.

Gabriel and “Evan”

Despite the fact that I think this OVA is boring, Gabriel is a very well-written character. He’s a kid going through a rebellious phase because his parents are overbearing. At least, that’s how he views the situation. In reality, his parents are concerned for his health.

What makes Gabriel such a compelling character, though, is how he responds to this. His parents tell him not to run because of his asthma. So, what does he do? He runs, of course. His parents also forced him to move far away from his friends. So, he withdraws into his hobbies and fantasies.

He does the things we’d expect from a boy of his age. That’s why he’s a good character. And, he likes knights and magic and stuff like that. So, it’s no surprise that he finds this whole Wild Hunt thing to be exciting.

"Evan" smiling at Gabriel from the anime OVA The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm
“Evan” smiling at Gabriel

Of course, because Gabriel is a kid, he doesn’t always make smart choices. For example, he doesn’t appreciate the danger that “Evan” and the Wild Hunt pose to him. Simply coming into physical contact with them is detrimental to his health. But, Gabriel cares more about playing with his new friend.

In the third episode, Gabriel even “decides” that he’d rather go with the Wild Hunt than return home. Though, it’s unknown how coerced this decision was. Gabriel was clearly being influenced by the Wild Hunt’s magic. But, it still may have only influenced him because it’s what he wanted.

Either way, at the very end, Gabriel snaps out of the spell and realizes his poor decision. He realizes that his family cares about him and that he doesn’t want to be away from them. And with that, “Evan” releases him from spending eternity with the Wild Hunt. Yeah, that’s the end.

Final Thoughts

In the end, I had to give The Ancient Magus’ Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm a 4/10. It’s bad. It doesn’t further our understanding of magic. And there’s barely anything to the plot. If you have an hour to spare, I wouldn’t waste it on this OVA.

Kakegurui Twin Review

Kakegurui Twin Review

Kakegurui Twin anime series cover art
Kakegurui Twin

New Student Mary Saotome

Kakegurui Twin (賭ケグルイ双) is a prequel ONA to the main Kakegurui series. In case you aren’t aware, ONA stands for Original Net Animation. It’s like an OVA, Original Video Animation, but released online (in this case, on Netflix).

As a prequel, Kakegurui Twin doesn’t follow Yumeko. She’s not at Hyakkou Private Academy yet. Instead, it follows Mary Saotome, one of the main series’ supporting characters. But, why is it called Twin? Mary has a twin-tail hairstyle. That’s why one of the strokes in the character for Twin (双) is the same color as her hair.

Now, it’s been years since I watched the main Kakegurui series. The first season came out way back in 2018 and the sequel came out in 2020. So, I don’t exactly remember how it started off. I don’t remember if Yumeko comes in partway through the first year or at the start of the second.

Tsuzura viewing Mary as her prince

But, in Twin, Mary seems to come into the school partway through her first year. By the time she enters the school, the hierarchy has already been established. There are winners and there are losers (pets). And, obviously, Mary wants to be a winner.

The thing is, Mary is pretty different in this series compared to how she is in the main series. She’s not entirely a different person. But, in the main series, she’s a lot more twisted. She’s no Yumeko. But, she has her moments when she goes off the rails. We don’t see that in Twin.

Twin’s version of Mary is much nicer as a person. She has friends whom she cares about. She wants to save Tsuzura Hanatemari from her fate as a pet. And, she treats both Tsuzura and Yumiki as her equals. That’s not the Mary I know.

The Pet Girl of Hyakkaou

Let me explain the pet system of Hyakkaou for those of you who are new to Kakegurui or have simply forgotten. Hyakkaou is a private school where gambling decides the hierarchy of students. And, if you go into debt, you become a pet.

Pets are second-class citizens within the school. It’s completely okay for other students to bully and take advantage of them. And, the only way to stop being a pet is to pay off your debt to the student council. However, you can’t do that whenever you please. There are specific dates on which payment is due.

So, this brings us to Mary’s best friend, Tsuzura Hanatemari. At the start of the series, Tsuzura is a pet with a million yen in debt. However, Tsuzura comes from a wealthy family and has no issue lending Mary large amounts, like 500,000 yen. So, how is she in debt?

Mikura Sado and Sachiko Juraku from the anime series Kakegurui Twin
Mikura Sado and Sachiko Juraku

Anyway, Tsuzura is one of the two main pets of this season. Unfortunately, she’s the worse of the two. She doesn’t really have any redeeming qualities and is only there to be Mary’s right hand. Kind of like how the male lead in the main Kakegurui series was to Yumeko.

The better of the two main pets is Mikura Sado. She’s the personal pet of Sachiko Juraku, an upperclassman and student council member. Sachiko is the primary antagonist of this prequel. But, it’s Mikura who’s actively working against Mary at every turn.

You see, Mikura is a complete masochist. She wants nothing more than to be used and abused by Sachiko. And, when Sachiko starts taking an interest in Mary, Mikura feels threatened. She needs to ensure Mary fails in all her gambles to Sachiko will lose interest in her.

Gambling to the Top

In this section, I want to cover some of the bad things about Kakegurui Twin. But, I want to preface it by saying that I enjoyed this series, as you’ll see from my final rating.

My first complaint is that — most of the time — this show looks like garbage. In the picture above, you’ll notice a greenish tint. Well, that greenish tint is present for a large percentage of the anime. And, you may recognize it from some of Mappa’s other shows, like the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Second, and something I mentioned a bit already, the characters aren’t very good. Mary feels like a watered-down version of herself. And, the new characters are all pretty boring. Alongside Tsuzura, Yukimi Togakushi is also one of Mary’s friends. She’s as bland as can be. The only good thing about her is the way she bounces in the ED.

Yukimi, Mary, and Tsuzura from the anime series Kakegurui Twin
Yukimi, Mary, and Tsuzura

The antagonists aren’t any better. I already mentioned that Sachiko Juraku is the main antagonist. But, there’s also a secondary antagonist, fellow student council member Aoi Mibuomi. Neither of these antagonists plays a very active role in the series. They just set up gambles and let others participate.

The third issue I have is that Twin doesn’t feel like a complete series. It’s only six episodes long and doesn’t have a real conclusion. Maybe that’s because it actually isn’t complete. I have no idea. But, it can’t go on forever since it will run into the main series at some point.

By the end of these six episodes, Mary hasn’t defeated either of the student council members in her way. There’s no satisfying ending where she beats one of them or even loses to them. It just kind of ends — and not even with Yumeko’s introduction.

Final Thoughts

Even with the problems I have with Kakegurui Twin, I still gave it a 7/10. Kakegurui is still a fun anime to watch. The gambles in this prequel weren’t as exciting as some of those from the main series. But, I think that’s mainly because Yumeko and her over-the-top reactions weren’t involved.

Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2 Review

Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2 Review

The Battle of Heaven and Earth

Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2 is the last part of the series. For real this time. It even covered chapter 139.5 at the end. So, there’s literally no additional manga content to go over.

In this review, I want to go over the main parts of the special, the iconic moments from the manga, and add a bit more context. Not everything is explained very well in this last part of the series. And, there’s a pretty good reason for that.

It seems like Isayama (my GOAT) had absolutely no idea what he was doing toward the end.

With that said, the first part of the special doesn’t have too much to discuss. It focuses on the large battle against the past generations of the Nine Titans on Eren’s back.

Past generations of the Nine Titans from the anime series Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2
Past generations of the Nine Titans

From what I remember, this is the first time that we really see how the various Titans work. For example, the Beast Titan doesn’t have to be a giant ape. That’s Zeke’s Beast Titan. There are many others, like the dragon Beast Titan we see for a second.

And, what’s cool about this is that it was hinted at way back in the OP of Season 2. Go watch it and you’ll notice a bunch of animals running alongside Zeke’s Beast Titan. These are previous generations of the Beast Titan. And, some of the interesting ones we see there are a whale and a tyrannosaurus rex.

The Warhammer Titan is similar in that it doesn’t always use a hammer. It uses various weapons throughout history. But then, there are some Titans that are less obvious. For example, what would you think Falco’s titan is? It’s a bird, so it’s the Beast, right? Wrong, it’s the Jaw Titan.

A Long Dream

The second part of the special is where we start getting into the iconic scenes. In my review of the first special episode, I mentioned how it was actually better than the manga. Well, I can’t say the same for this special episode.

For example, there’s the scene where Zeke starts talking to Armin about the origin of life. In the manga, he had me thinking he was about to drop a bombshell about Titans being aliens. The anime didn’t quite capture that misdirection, which I think is a shame.

Though, I’d still argue that the Titans are aliens. After all, there’s the worm. We never get a very good explanation of what the worm is other than “the will of Ymir.” But, we also know that the worm existed before Ymir. It was what infected her and led to the Titans existing.

Mikasa kissing Eren's severed head from the anime series Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2
Mikasa kissing Eren’s severed head

Speaking of Ymir, her role is something that’s not explained very well. But, allow me to clear things up. As Eren or Zeke points out, Ymir followed King Fritz’s orders for the past 2,000 years because she loved him. Terrible writing, I know. But, we mere mortals can’t comprehend the genius that is Isayama.

This is important, though, because it ties into something else dumb that Isayama does. He makes Mikasa the protagonist of the series. Mikasa was “always” meant to be the one who saves the world. And we know that because Ymir chose her. But, why?

It’s simple, actually. Ymir was in an abusive “relationship” with King Fritz. And Mikasa is in an abusive “relationship” with Eren. So, Ymir wanted Mikasa to kill her lover as a proxy for herself and King Fritz. Or, something like that. It’s unclear if Mikasa kissing or killing Eren was the goal.

Toward the Tree on That Hill

I guess I should have mentioned that Mikasa kissing Eren’s head is another iconic scene. But, less because of the kiss and more because of Ymir smiling in the background. The anime did that scene justice. It would have been hard to mess up.

Unfortunately, these next two iconic scenes weren’t as good in the anime. The first is Eren’s “10 years at least” crying scene. It was always cringe to see Eren break down and say something that pathetic. Even Armin says as much. But, it just wasn’t as funny in the anime.

And, skipping ahead, the scene of the bird pulling on Mikasa’s scarf wasn’t as good in the anime, either. Though, that may only be because I already knew about it. After the final chapter of the manga came out, there were a lot of great bird Eren memes.

Mikasa sitting by Eren's grave from the anime series Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2
Mikasa sitting by Eren’s grave

What was the scene that the anime butchered the most, though? For me, it was the scene of Levi saluting the ghosts of his fallen comrades. The manga version of that scene hit way harder than the anime version, even when I went back to re-read it.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think my issue with the anime version of this scene was the color. Seeing Levi’s comrades depicted in color made it feel less like he was seeing their ghosts. In the manga, everything’s in black and white. So, it looks like Levi’s seeing his comrades’ figures in the smoke itself.

And, the final scene I want to mention is the last scene of the anime. Even after the Titans were gone, war persisted. And in the post-apocalyptic world, we see a boy come across Eren’s grave. He enters the tree’s hollow, and this is exactly how Titans originated with Ymir.

Final Thoughts

I ended up giving Attack on Titan: Final Season – The Final Chapters Special 2 a 7/10. I genuinely think it’s a good piece of media. Even with the parts I felt the manga did better, it’s a good watch. But, I also recognize I may be a biased manga reader.

Yumekuri Review

Yumekuri Review

Makoto and the Onsen Maidens

Yumekuri isn’t the anime I planned to review today. But, since Zom 100 has been delayed yet again, here we are. It was the only one-episode OVA I had on my list that wasn’t effectively hentai. Though, you wouldn’t know that from the cover art (not included in this review).

Now, before I get into the content of Yumekuri, there are some things you should know. First, Hiro is the original creator. You may be familiar with one of their other works, Akebi’s Sailor Uniform, which I really enjoyed.

Second, Yumekuri is older than I thought it was. This anime came out in 2012. And, unfortunately, I only saw it available in 480p quality. It would have been better if the picture quality was a bit higher. Anyway, finally, this is a short OVA that’s only six minutes long.

Makoto and Akino (holding a cat) from the Yumekuri anime OVA
Makoto and Akino (holding a cat)

Due to its length, this anime is more of a trailer for the manga than a real OVA. But, it does introduce us to all the main characters. The protagonist is Makoto Yukami, a guy who works at a hot spring. And the other five characters are girls who also work at the hot spring.

Akino Mikogai is the first and youngest girl we meet. She refers to Makoto as onii-chan, but there’s no indication they’re actually related. Next, we have Tokura Ushiki, who seems to be the oldest of the girls. From what we see, she’s a classic older sister type.

Tsutsuji Tounosawa is the energetic, sporty girl of the bunch. At least, that’s what I gathered. And Mitomo Rokuya is a bit of a mystery. We don’t get much of her. But, she has a smug face in the cover art. Finally, there’s Yuri Shirahane, the goddess of the hot spring.

Goddess of the Hot Spring

Yes, you read that right. Yuri is the goddess of the hot spring. But, what exactly does that mean? It means she’s a goddess with supernatural powers, duh. However, that’s not as unique of a description as you might think.

It turns out that all of the girls who work at the hot spring have supernatural powers. And, we see three of the girls use these powers when they need to heat up a bath. They have the ability to heat up water with some kind of magic.

Tsutsuji also seems to exhibit superhuman physical prowess. After neither she nor Akino can adequately heat the bath, she runs off in search of Yuri. And when she returns carrying Yuri, she does so by dropping out of the sky. This is why I said she seems like the energetic, sporty type.

Mitomo and Makoto watching Tsutsuji heating up a bath from the Yumekuri anime OVA
Mitomo and Makoto watching Tsutsuji heating up a bath

So, again, what does it mean that Yuri is the goddess of the hot spring? Is she actually a goddess? Or, does that title simply mean that she’s the most skilled of the hot spring attendants? After all, she was able to heat the bath to the perfect temperature when the others couldn’t.

Tsutsuji wasn’t able to make the bath water hot enough. And Akino made it so hot that it began to boil. Yuri was the one who made it just right. To me, that makes it seem like Yuri isn’t actually a goddess but holds a specific title, instead.

However, there is one other bit of information I’ve kept from you. In the cover art for this series, Yuri looks different. Within the OVA, she has black hair like Mitomi. But, in the cover art, her hair is white. So, there could actually be something special about her.

A Hot Spring for Cats

Based on the six minutes of this OVA, it’s a bit hard to say what the full series is about. But, since this is a review of the OVA, that’s all I’m going off. And, according to what I saw in it, it’s about a hot spring for cats.

Akino wants to bring a cat into the hot spring, and Makoto says no. Then, everyone works together to make a separate hot spring for the cat and a bunch of other cats show up.

In the end, however, the girls end up taking the cats into the main hot spring anyway. Why? Because they remembered that this is their off-season. That means cats in the hot spring won’t be bothering any other guests.

So, case closed, right? The series is about a hot spring for cats.

Mitomo and Tsutsuji in an onsen with a cat from the Yumekuri anime OVA
Mitomo and Tsutsuji in an onsen with a cat

I don’t think that’s actually what Yumekuri is about. Though, it’s very possible that I’m wrong since I haven’t read the manga. But, my impression from this OVA is that it’s about a “normal” (supernatural) hot spring. Not a hot spring for cats.

As we’re told, the only reason they could bring the cats into the hot spring was because it’s the off-season. I’d imagine that the majority of the series doesn’t take place during the off-season. And that would mean that for the majority of the series, there are no cats in the hot spring.

If Yumekiri ever got a full-length anime, I’d watch it. From what little I saw, it seemed like it could be a good slice of life series. But, I doubt that’s ever going to happen. It’s been 11 years since this OVA came out and the manga ended back in 2016. What incentive is there for an anime series now?

Yumekuri: 6/10

In the end, I gave Yumekuri a 6/10, which is higher than the OVA’s average score. Yes, it’s short and the picture quality is bad. But, piqued my interest in the series. And, who knows? Maybe you’ll even see a review of the manga from me in the future.

The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc

The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc

The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc

The Childhood Friend

The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc (Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai: Tenri-hen / 神のみぞ知るセカイ 天理篇) is the 4th installment in Kaminomi. It’s a 2-episode OVA that comes after the Four Girls and an Idol OVA. It also appears to set up the Goddesses arc.

Since there are only 2 episodes in this OVA, it only features a single conquerable girl: Tenri Ayukawa. Tenri is, apparently, Keima’s childhood friend. Although, Keima claims he has no memory of her. But, over the course of the arc, he slowly remembers the time he spent with Tenri.

For her part, Tenri also initially claims she doesn’t remember who Keima is. However, it becomes clear that she was lying when she said that. How could any girl ever forget a guy with as much rizz as Keima?

Tenri Ayukawa from the anime series The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc
Tenri Ayukawa

The fact that Keima doesn’t remember Tenri, though, is a problem I have with this arc. Plot devices like amnesia or suppressed memories aren’t very interesting to me. In order for them to work, the entire series or movie has to be built around them. A good example of this is the non-anime movie Memento.

In the first episode of the OVA, the majority of the runtime goes into introducing the new characters. Not all that much actually happens in it. And then in the second episode, most of the runtime has to do with Keima regaining his memories of Tenri. Conquering Tenri only happens in the final few minutes.

Also, unlike the other girls in the series, Tenri already likes Keima. There’s not much that goes into him conquering her. That’s why it’s done at the very end of the OVA. But, that also means we miss out on some of the best content — when the girls start to get feelings for him.

New Characters

There are four new characters in the Tenri arc. These are Tenri Ayukawa (of course), Diana, Nora Floriann Leoria, and Ryou Asama. Besides those four, the only other characters in the arc are Keima, Elsie, and Keima’s mother.

Tenri Ayukawa is, as mentioned before, Keima’s childhood friend. However, that’s not exactly the most apt description of their relationship. They were in the same class in grade school. But, they didn’t really interact with each other. The one time they did was when they got stranded on a boat during a school trip.

What I wasn’t expecting from Tenri was her personality. Based on the cover art for this OVA, she looks a lot like Tsukihi Araragi. Of course, both Kaminomi and the Monogatari series have the same character designer. But it’s more than that. Even the face she’s making is similar. However, Tenri isn’t like Tsukihi — she’s extremely shy.

Nora Floriann Leoria from the anime series The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc
Nora Floriann Leoria

Diana is kind of like Tenri’s alter ego. At first, Keima and Elsie thought Diana was a lost soul within Tenri. But, it turns out that’s not the case. Diana is something else and claims that she used to hunt down lost souls.

Nora Floriann Leoria is a demon like Elsie. And like Elsie, she’s tasked with hunting down lost souls. It turns out that when a demon locates a lost soul, they have to call it in to the HQ and claim it. That way, two demons won’t be hunting the same lost soul.

Ryou Asama is Nora’s “buddy.” He’s to Nora what Keima is to Elsie. But, he’s not like Keima at all. He tries very hard to be romantic. And when that doesn’t work, Nora results to other tactics. She believes that hatred is the best way to fill the void in someone’s heart.

Lost Soul or Goddess?

So, I said that Keima and Elsie thought Diana was a lost soul at first. But, she’s not. She actually had a lost soul in her possession that she gave to Keima at the end of the OVA. And what she said to him is that she used to hunt down lost souls.

Does that mean she’s a demon like Elsie and Nora? Not quite. She seems to be something else entirely. And I was going to say she might be an angel. But, then I remembered what the title of the next arc is: “Goddesses.”

It seems very likely that Diana is actually a goddess. Even her name hints at this being the case. Diana is one of the Roman goddesses. And this is why I mentioned earlier that this OVA seems to be leading into the next arc. It introduces the first goddess.

Keima kissing Tenri from the anime series The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc
Keima kissing Tenri

Something else to keep in mind is that Keima didn’t really have to conquer Tenri in this arc. Tenri already had a crush on him from the start. And she didn’t even have a lost soul within her. There was no hole in her heart.

But, then we need to ask the question, why did Elsie’s lost soul radar go off? I can think of two possibilities. The first is that it was reacting to the lost soul Diana had captured. And that seems to be what the end of this OVA wants you to believe.

However, I think the real reason is different. My guess is that her radar was reacting to Diana. Since the next arc is the Goddesses arc, that implies Keima is going to have to conquer goddesses. So, that must mean there’s a lost soul in Diana’s heart — or she’s become one herself.

Conclusion

In the end, I gave The World God Only Knows: Tenri Arc a 5/10. That’s the same score I gave to the previous OVA in the series. Hopefully, the Goddesses arc is better since it’s a full season and not an OVA.
