Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 1 Review

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 1 Review

Those Who Manifest the Mark

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 1 is the first episode of the fourth season. I know, it’s the fifth arc. But, the Mugen Train Arc isn’t a season. So, this is Season 4, not Season 5.

Now, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the previous two seasons. I thought the Entertainment District Arc was fine. And, I thought the Swordsmith Village Arc was good. But, I didn’t think either was amazing, as most people seem to. But, I do think that this arc is off to a very good start.

One of the things I like about this episode is how it introduces a new, mysterious twist. Previously, Tanjirou, Mitsuri, and Muichirou awoke special markings during combat that enhanced their abilities. Well, now we know a little more about those markings and what they mean.

The first swordsman to awaken these markings was the very first breathing technique user. And, when one person awakens these markings, others around them begin to as well. So, it’s thanks to Tanjirou that two of the Hashira had their awakenings. That’s kind of interesting. However, what’s more interesting is the drawback.

We don’t actually know what this drawback is. But, according to Amane Ubuyashiki, something (bad) happens to everyone who awakens the mark. The simple answer would be that they’re guaranteed to die. Though, that’s not very unique. Everyone’s going to die at some point and demon slayers accept that they’ll likely die in battle.

So, my prediction is that anyone who awakens the mark will become a demon. After all, one of the Upper Moons looks exactly like the first breathing technique user. I don’t remember if it’s confirmed that they’re the same person. But, if it’s not, it seems very obvious.

Nezuko Training Arc

Alright, so what’s the Hashira Training Arc all about? Based on the title, I assumed that it was going to be about Tanjirou, Zenitsu, and Inosuke training to become new Hashira. After all, there are only six Hashira now, down from eight at the start of the series.

That may be something that happens in this arc. But, what it’s primarily about is the Hashira training all of the members of the Demon Slayer Corps. The average member of the Demon Slayer Corps isn’t that strong — and that needs to change.

To remedy this, the current and retired Hashira are going to take turns training everyone. Each Hashira — except for Giyuu Tomioka — is going to focus on a different area. For example, Mitsuri is going to teach the demon slayers to be more flexible and Iguro is going to teach them to be faster.

Okay, so what about Giyuu? Why isn’t he helping out? He said something about “not being like” the other Hashira and left. Sanemi assumed Giyuu meant he thought he was better than them. But, I’m not so sure. I think Giyuu doesn’t want to awaken the marking for some reason.

The demon slayers aren’t the only ones getting training in this arc, though. Nezuko’s getting some training as well — not in combat, but in being a human. She’s learning to speak and act like a normal person again. By the end of the arc, she might be a regular character.

Is that for the best, though? I’ll admit that if Nezuko can think and communicate normally, she’ll be more interesting. But, that also kind of takes away what makes her character unique. Would she still be the Nezuko we know today? Or, would that change her?

To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji

At the very end of Episode 1, Tamayo gets recruited into the Demon Slayer Corps. This is a big deal because Tamayo is a demon. Though, it might not seem like that big of a deal considering Nezuko’s situation.

Obviously, Tamayo and the Demon Slayer Corps are on the same side. They both want to eradicate demons but in different ways. The Demon Slayer Corps wants to kill them and Tamayo wants to cure them. However, that difference isn’t why they haven’t worked together before now.

The big thing that was stopping them from working together was that, as mentioned, Tamayo is a demon. Before the Demon Slayer Corps was aware of Nezuko, they didn’t believe demons could be “good.” They knew they could be sentient, as is the case with Kibutsuji and the Moons. But, good? No way.

Now, with all the progress Nezuko has made, it’s clear that not all demons are evil. Some still retain their humanity — with Tamayo being a prime example. But, how long before contacting Tamayo did the Demon Slayer Corps know about her? Did they only learn of her after Tanjirou became a demon slayer?

I don’t remember if Tanjirou told the leadership of the Demon Slayer Corps about her. From what we saw in this episode, her existence is still being kept secret from the average member of the organization. But, my assumption is that the Ubuyashiki clan has known about her for some time.

Tamayo hasn’t been killing humans, so there hasn’t been a reason for the demon slayers to target her. But, it does seem like they know a lot about her. And, the fact that they had to track her down implies that Tanjirou didn’t give up her location.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 1? What do you think happens to everyone who awakens the mark? Do you want Nezuko to become a demon who can communicate perfectly? And, do you think Tamayo being recruited into the Demon Slayer Corps is a trap?
