Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 3 Review

Tanjirou Joins the Hashira Training

If you like shirtless, muscular men, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 3 is a great episode. And if you’re not into that, it’s still a good episode. The training montage was satisfying and there’s some good action.

It’s finally time for Tanjirou to join the training program. Until now, he’s been recovering from his injuries. But he needs to start doing some real training. He’s never going to reach the rank of Hashira by taking it easy.

Speaking of reaching the rank of Hashira, I still think that’s how this season will end. By the end of the Hashira Training Arc, Tanjirou should be the newest Hashira. He’s way more skilled than the average demon slayer. And, he’s already helped defeat two of the Upper Moons. None of the current Hashira can say they’ve done that.

Now, something I like about this episode is that everyone seems to recognize this. Sanemi and Obanai mentioned how none of their trainees are going to be a match for an Upper Moon. The other demon slayers training alongside Tanjirou know that he’s built different. And Tengen even has special training for Tanjirou.

There’s an understanding that this Hashira training program has different goals. It’s not meant to make the average demon slayer capable of killing an Upper Moon. The goal for them is for them to be able to handle more of the minor demons.

That will free up the stronger demon slayers, like Tanjirou, to focus on the stronger demons. This is what Tanjirou is training for. He’s specifically training to be able to defeat more of the Upper Moons.

Finally, there are the current Hashira. The goal of this training for them is to awaken their marks.

Dueling Hashira

Sanemi and Obanai, the Wind and Serpent Hashira, don’t have much faith in the Hashira training program. Instead of training up the Demon Slayer Corps riff-raff, they want to focus on more important things. Things like figuring out where all those demons at the castle went.

We’ve known about Kibutsuji’s pocket dimension castle for quite a while. So, I kind of forgot that the characters don’t know about it. Sanemi and Obanai were the first two demon slayers to make it that far. Not even Tanjirou has been inside the castle.

But what’s the significance of the castle? Why is locating it so important? First, they likely assume that this could be where Kibutsuji is hiding. And, as we know, the primary goal of the Demon Slayer Corps is to kill Kibutsuji. Once he’s dead, the rest of the demons should disappear.

Second, the fact that the demon’s castle dimension disappeared is troubling. Does that mean it can reappear at any time? What about anywhere? If that pocket dimension can pop up anywhere Kibutsuji wants it to, that’s a huge issue for the demon slayers. He can launch a large-scale sneak attack.

Now that Sanemi and Obanai are potentially on Kibutsuji’s trail, though, they need to get stronger. They need to awaken their markings before they face him in combat. And, that seems to be the rationale behind these two challenging each other to a duel.

From what we know, the markings appear under certain circumstances. They have to be in a life-or-death battle, and they have to push beyond their limits. By having a real duel between themselves, Sanemi and Obanai may be able to manufacture these circumstances.

They’re not going to fight with wooden swords; this is a real duel.

Tanjirou Kamado vs. Tengen Uzui

I’m now remembering that I made a prediction about the special markings. Sometime during the Swordsmith Village Arc, I predicted that Tengen awakened it. Not that he awakened it during that arc, but that he already had the marking awakened.

My evidence for this was the dot pattern on his face. It was the same color as the marks we saw on Tanjirou, Tokito, and Kanroji. So, I assumed that was Tengen’s mark. But now, it’s pretty obvious that’s not the case. That seems to have simply been face paint.

Tengen had that mark on his face 24/7, not only when he was in combat. And, during the Hashira meeting at the start of this season, Amane said Tanjirou was the first to awaken the mark. At least, of this generation’s demon slayers. We know that, at the very least, the first demon slayer awakened the mark, too.

So, is Tengen training to awaken his mark like the current Hashira? I doubt it. He’s already retired, and his wives don’t want him to go back to fighting. It really seems like he’s more focused on training the other demon slayers than himself.

As I mentioned earlier, Tengen even provided special training for Tanjirou. He took Tanjirou and the other demon slayers into the mountains at night and acted as a demon. The normal demon slayers’ goal was to “survive.” Tanjirou’s goal was to defeat Tengen while protecting the others.

Tanjirou didn’t do a great job at this. Tengen took out most of the other demon slayers before Tanjirou could even track his movements. And, in the end, it doesn’t appear that Tanjirou was able to defeat Tengen. However, Tanjirou and Tengen also weren’t using their breathing techniques. Could Tanjirou have won if they did?

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc Episode 3? Did you like seeing Tengen’s demon slayer training? Who do you think would win a duel between Sanemi and Obanai? And, do you think Tengen is going to return to the frontlines for the final battle or stay retired?
