What’s New for Season 2?

Isekai Quartet 2 (異世界かるてっと2) is obviously the sequel season to Isekai Quartet, the half-length anime which is a crossover between four isekai anime series. I’m not going to spend too much time going over this because you can just check out my review of season 1, but Isekai Quartet includes characters from Re:ZERO, KonoSuba, Overlord, and Tanya the Evil.

So what’s new for season 2? Nothing really.

There are a few characters from newer anime featured in this season, but I’ll be discussing them in the next section. Aside from that, though, the main difference between the first season and this one is a couple of new supporting characters who were added in from the four original series.

For example, Chomusuke, Megumin’s demonic cat, makes her first appearance as a “transfer student.” There are also a few other side characters ported over from both Re:ZERO and Overlord. However, I don’t specifically remember any new characters from Tanya the Evil being added.

As for the “plot” of the series, that’s the same as it’s always been. The characters from these various series need to work together to have a good school life so that they can go back to their respective (not original) worlds. And I’m going to spoil this right now, they don’t make it back — sorry.

The OP and ED for this season are also pretty similar to those of season 1, but I actually liked the season 1 songs more. This ED, however, features the secondary female characters of each series rather than the main female characters.

Season 1’s ED features Emilia, Aqua, Albedo, and Tanya. Season 2’s ED features Rem, Megumin, Shalltear, and Viktoriya.

New Series Characters

If you’ve already watched season 1, then you’ll be aware that characters from the anime The Rising of the Shield Hero were revealed to be in season 2. Three characters from that series were included in Isekai Quartet 2: Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo.

Now, if you’re anything like me when you saw that reveal you were probably thinking, “They can’t call it Isekai Quartet if it’s an isekai quintet now!” And if that’s the case, you’ll be happy to know that the Shield Hero characters don’t really play a role in this series at all. They’re basically just background characters who get a few lines per episode — if that.

But actually, after completing the entire season, I think the Shield Hero characters would have been better off as full characters in this series. The reason being that it just felt weird to include them, but then to also make them nothing more than background characters.

Adding in main characters from an entirely new series isn’t the same as adding in supporting characters from the original four series, and it felt odd that it was treated like it was. Either commit to making them real characters or limit them to a single cameo (or cut them altogether).

Also, I was considering spoiler tagging this, but there’s an image later on in the review which will spoil it anyway, so I’ll just come out with it. Shield Hero isn’t the only new series that got characters in Isekai Quartet 2. Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overly Powered but Overly Cautious was also featured.

Both Seiya and Ristarte made it into season 2, but these two really were featured in more of a cameo role. I only remember them making an appearance in one episode, but they may have been in the last two.

Predictions for Season 3

There’s not really much else to discuss in regards to season 2, so I figured now would be a good time to make some predictions regarding season 3 since it’s been confirmed. And for my first prediction, I don’t think this will be the final season.

I do think that Isekai Quartet is going to end somewhat soon, but I think they can get a fourth season out of it still. As for why I think it’s going to end, I’ve heard that Overlord is ending. Of course, the Overlord anime isn’t ending just yet (unless they decide to cut it short), but I think once that does end we might see the end of Isekai Quartet as well.

It’s possible that Isekai Quartet could continue even after the end of Overlord, or that Overlord could be replaced by Shield Hero or Cautious Hero, but I don’t see it happening. I think they’ll just move on to something else instead and leave the Isekai Quartet series as a finished product.

I also expect to see the Shield Hero characters play a larger role in the next season. They were turned into supporting rather than background characters at the very end of season 2, so I think season 3 will feature them a bit more. And with this, the Cautious Hero characters may be upgraded as well.

Of course, I still think the characters from these other series will be supporting characters, not main characters, but at least they won’t be background characters.

And, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the inclusion of characters from yet another new series. Maple and Sally from BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense seem like prime candidates to me for inclusion into this series at least in a cameo capacity. BOFURI isn’t exactly an isekai, but it’s close enough.

Overall, Isekai Quartet 2 is a 6/10 from me, which is what I rated the first season as well. I enjoy watching it, but I still think that the four main series which make it up are better than Isekai Quartet individually. I’d rather watch any of those anime over this crossover.
