KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3 Episode 6 Review

The Silver-Haired Thief Brigade

Even after KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! 3 Episode 6, we don’t know who Chris’s employer is. Though, as we learned in Episode 5, it’s likely the goddess Eris. I assumed that would have been confirmed in this episode. But, it wasn’t.

Still, we did get to see Kazuma team up with Chris to steal the divine treasure in the castle. Of course, this is the divine treasure in Iris’s possession that swaps bodies. And, as it turns out, this divine treasure is far more dangerous than I initially thought.

According to Chris, the body-swapping necklace can grant its user immortality. Well, a form of immortality. Technically, they’re still mortal and can die by various means. But, by swapping bodies with someone younger than they are, they can avoid dying of old age. Unless something kills them, they can live forever.

That last part is kind of important. Considering this divine treasure was in Iris’s possession, you know what that means. The original owner of this item is dead — it didn’t save them. But, luckily, since the people of this world can’t read Japanese, nobody else figured out how to use it.

Alright, but how does this item make you immortal? The body-swapping effect only lasts for a limited amount of time. Well, if you kill the other person after swapping bodies with them, the swap is permanent. However, that also means that they could kill you and take the item for themself after seeing you use it.

Anyway, this item is far more powerful than I gave it credit for and I can now see why Eris wants to remove it from this world. But, did Kazuma and Chris need to steal it? I’m sure Iris would have given it to Kazuma.

Darkness Can Be Competent Sometimes

You know, I often forget that Darkness isn’t actually stupid. In fact, the only stupid one in the group is Aqua. Kazuma’s got common sense and street smarts. Megumin is a certified genius when her chuunibyou isn’t showing. And, Darkness is a well-adjusted person when BDSM isn’t involved.

Over the first half of this season, there have been plenty of examples of Darkness being a normal person. When she needs to, she can fit right into noble society. But, there was one point in this episode that really made me remember this.

When Kazuma and Chris make it to Iris’s room, Darkness immediately recognizes them. Claire, Rain, and Mitsurugi didn’t recognize Kazuma. Aqua and Megumin didn’t recognize either Kazuma or Chris. But, Darkness did. As soon as she saw them, she understood what was going on and tried to help them play it off.

Of the main four characters, Darkness has always been my least favorite. She’s fine. But, I’ve never found her to be as funny as the other three. This, though, was good. Seeing her face when she realized what was going on was priceless.

Personally, I’d like to see more Darkness content like this. I get that a lot of people like her masochistic side. I like that side of her too. But, I often feel like it’s overused. Or, maybe it’s not overused, but it’s used in the same few ways too much. It’s not a very versatile gag.

I’m sure there are people who would argue that the other characters’ gags are too overused. And, in some ways, I agree. But, Darkness’s masochism gag is only ever used in a few ways. By contrast, Megumin’s chuunibyou comes into play in a far wider range of scenarios.

Kazuma’s Future Wife

The one other person who recognized Kazuma as one of the thieves was Iris. Though, it’s unclear if she recognized Kazuma in the moment. She definitely knew it was him after the fact, as she knows he’s the one who has her ring.

Now, according to Darkness, the ring is important for a very special reason. Whoever gives the ring to Iris is the person who’s going to marry her. Basically, it’s an engagement ring that Iris holds onto until the right person comes along. She then hands it over to them and they present it back to her.

This is why Darkness forbids Kazuma from returning the ring. I’m sure Kazuma considered returning the ring so he could marry Iris. But, even he understands that this would cause a huge commotion. It would damage Iris’s image as the princess if a random adventurer presented the ring to her.

However, at the end of the episode, Iris mentions another reason why the ring is important. Apparently, the person who’s meant to present it to her is the person who defeats the Demon King. So, by defeating the Demon King, you earn the princess’s hand in marriage.

Does this confirm that Iris is Kazuma’s future wife? Kazuma’s “goal” is to defeat the Demon King. Well, it’s not his personal goal. But, it’s the goal he was tasked with when Aqua reincarnated him into this world. And, it’s a goal he’s made pretty good progress toward.

I’m going to say that Iris and Kazuma will not end up together. Why? Because that wouldn’t be funny. This makes me think that some random person is going to get the final blow against the Demon King, denying Kazuma. Or, some technicality might block Kazuma from marrying Iris.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of KonoSuba 3 Episode 6? Does the potential for immortality change your ranking of the body-swapping necklace among the divine treasures? Do you prefer competent Darkness or masochist Darkness? And, do you think Kazuma will eventually marry Iris after defeating the Demon King?
