Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 Episode 22 Review

Save Zenith, Even if it Kills You

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 Episode 22 was definitely one of the major episodes of the series. Episode 18 was titled “Turning Point 3.” But I think the turning point was actually these past five episodes as a whole.

I wasn’t exactly expecting the battle to save Zenith to happen this week. I thought that might be the final episode of the season. But here we are. And before the battle took place, Paul told Rudeus to save his mother even if it kills him.

Yeah, maybe that’s not something Paul should have said. I get that Zenith is his wife and all. However, he shouldn’t be so willing to say that he’d rather lose his only son than one of his two wives — especially directly to that son.

Okay, but what about the part when Paul got mad at Rudeus for not being worked up when they found Zenith? Was Paul in the right? No. But, Rudeus’s take is a bit odd, as well. He doesn’t view Zenith as his mother. To him, she’s more of a roommate. She’s a woman who he lived with for a few years.

He didn’t say that out loud. But if he had, I’m sure Paul would have hit him. However, this way of viewing Zenith kind of makes sense. Rudeus didn’t spend his formative years with her. He already had 20-30 years’ worth of memories when he was born.

On top of that, it’s not like Zenith did much to raise Rudeus, anyway. Lilia was arguably more of a mother to Rudeus than Zenith was. And when he was only 7 years old, Rudeus was sent off to live with relatives. He’s now 17 and hasn’t seen Zenith in 10 years.

Hydra Slayer Rudeus

The monster guarding Zenith within the Teleportation Labyrinth is a hydra. Specifically, it’s a manatite hydra, which has scales that absorb mana. Because of that, Rudeus’s and Roxy’s spells don’t work on it — at least not from far away. If they’re close enough, their spells can get through the barrier.

But something about how the hydra’s scales work doesn’t sit right with me. If they were blocking fire, water, and even ice magic, that’d be one thing. However, we also see them blocking the stone projectiles Rudeus uses. Those are solid objects, not mana.

I guess the idea is that Rudeus is making the projectiles out of mana, not only firing them with mana. But would it have worked if he created the projectiles out of the physical stone of the dungeon? I’m not sure and we never got to find out.

Anyway, because this is a hydra, the obvious way to defeat it is to cut off its heads. It has a lot of heads on very long necks that look great for cutting. However, also because it’s a hydra, it regenerates the heads that are cut off. So, how are you supposed to defeat it?

Luckily, Rudeus uses his knowledge of mythology from our world to solve the problem. Just as Hercules (Heracles) did, he’s going to use fire to seal the wounds after Paul cuts off the hydra’s heads. And the good news is that this plan actually works.

Unfortunately, as we saw, just because the plan worked didn’t mean the hydra was no longer a threat. Figuring out how to defeat the hydra is only the first step. Actually defeating the hydra is the second — and the one that’s far more challenging. But at least nobody died, right?

Zenith Got Casca’d

Time to spoil the episode. Paul is dead. He pushed Rudeus out of the way and got bitten in half by the hydra. But maybe he survived long enough to see that Rudeus saved Zenith. I doubt it. He was most likely mentally gone by the time he smiled at the end.

Now, I can’t say I was expecting that. I didn’t think anyone in the raiding party would die. Though, I did previously predict that Zenith would die. You can go back to my review of Episode 18 to check that for yourself.

Looks like I was wrong.

However, just because Zenith didn’t die doesn’t mean she’s okay. After sleeping for four days, she finally wakes up. And when she does, she seems to have suffered from severe mental decline. She has no idea what’s going on and is unable to communicate.

So, what do I mean when I say that Zenith got Casca’d? Well, time to spoil Berserk. Casca was a cool character in Berserk who had her mind broken. She mentally reverted to a childlike state and became unable to communicate. That sucked because I liked Casca as a character. And looks like the same thing is happening now.

I like Zenith as much as I feel anyone can like her. We don’t know all that much about her. But she’s cute, and we know that, like Paul, she’s a former S-rank adventurer. So, I wanted to get to know her more now that she’s been rescued.

From the looks of it, that’s not going to happen. It’s possible that Zenith’s condition could improve over time. Or, it’s possible that someone (maybe Rudeus) can use magic to heal her mind. However, I have a feeling that she’s effectively gone for good.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 Episode 22? Do you understand why Rudeus doesn’t feel all that close to Zenith? Were you expecting anyone to die in the fight against the hydra? And how do you feel about Zenith’s mental state?
