My Hero Academia Episode 94

My Hero Academia Episode 94

Kinoko Komori

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 94 wasn’t as good as Episode 93, in my opinion. Yes, we got to see two new quirks and were reminded of another. But none of those quirks got the same showcasing as Kuroiro’s quirk did last week.

The first of the three quirks we got to see in this episode was Kinoko Komori’s Mushroom quirk. I mentioned this last week, but Kinoko is just the Japanese word for mushroom. And when you look at her outfit, it’s obvious that her quirk is going to be mushroom-based.

So far, I think a lot of the Class 1-B quirks are fairly obvious like this from their character designs. You can look at 90% of them and tell what their quirk is going to be just from their designs. This doesn’t work as well with the Class 1-A students.

Anyway, how exactly does Kinoko’s quirk work? Well, simply put, she can create a large number of mushrooms of various kinds. If that doesn’t sound like a very good quirk to you, that’s because it’s not. At least, not when used like that.

Sure, it effectively nullifies invisibility quirks and can probably slow your opponents down a bit. But at the end of the day, it’s not really much more than a mild annoyance. With that said, it actually can be a devastating quirk when used correctly.

At the end of the fight, Kinoko activates mushroom spores within Tokoyami’s lungs. This makes it difficult for him to breathe, and could eventually lead to death if left unchecked. By using her quirk in that way, Kinoko is actually a very dangerous opponent as long as her enemies aren’t wearing gas masks to prevent breathing in the spores.

Manga Fukidashi

Manga Fukidashi’s quirk doesn’t work in the way I expected it to. Last week I mentioned that I really didn’t know how it was going to work. But that was only because there are multiple different ways to make a manga-based quirk work that are all viable.

The way I thought was most likely, though, was that he would turn real-world objects into manga panels, thereby making them 2-dimensional. Maybe if he touches something, he can turn it into a 2D manga version of that object (or person).

Obviously, my assumption was wrong. But before we get to how his quirk actually works, we need to talk about its name. His quirk is actually called “Comic,” not “Manga.” And no, that’s not just the translation. It’s actually called Comic (コミック), which is pretty funny considering his name is Manga.

If you’re a fan of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, then Manga’s quirk may actually be familiar to you. It doesn’t work like Rohan’s manga stand, but it does work in a very similar way to Koichi’s Echoes stand from Part 4.

Basically, Manga can make the onomatopoeias (sound effects) from comics become real. If he says “crash,” then a giant piece of stone that’s carved to say the word “crash” might suddenly appear in the air and come crashing down.

Additionally, if he says “damp,” then the word damp will float through the air and disperse moisture. It’s a very versatile quirk. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get to see it used in complex ways. We only got to see the basics of Manga’s quirk.

It would have been cool to see a lot more of his onomatopoeias. Can he effectively replicate other quirks by chaining sounds together? And is he proficient enough with his quirk to change the landscape or weather? We don’t know.

Itsuka Kendo

I’m fairly confident that we’ve seen Kendo’s quirk in the past. However, until it was shown in this episode, I forgot what it was other than the fact I knew it had something to do with hand-to-hand combat. I mean, you can tell that much just from her character design.

Kendo has a very straightforward quirk. She can increase the size of her fists, and the bigger they are, the harder they hit. The only real question I have about it is how the size of her fists is determined. Can they be expanded at will as much as she wants?

I think it’s pretty obvious that the size of her fists has an upper bound. And she can probably increase this upper size limit through training with her quirk. But as long as she has the space needed to do so, is there anything else stopping her from always maxing out her quirk?

The more I think about it, the more I feel like there aren’t any additional limits on Kendo’s quirk. Her quirk doesn’t really need to be limited by the physical capabilities of her body as Deku’s is because it’s simply not as strong as Deku’s quirk.

If both Deku and Kendo punched something their hardest, I have no doubt that Deku’s punch would be far stronger than Kendo’s. But in order for him to use all of that strength, he would have to severely damage his body, unlike Kendo.

Another way to think about it is that Deku already has his quirk “maxed out.” His body just can’t use the full power of One-for-All without further training. However, for Kendo, she can already use 100% of her quirk. It’s just that what that 100% is will increase over time as she trains more.

What do you think of My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 94? I think this might have been the weakest episode in this Class A vs. Class B training arc so far. The previous episodes just did a better job at showcasing the new quirks featured in them.
