My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 146 Review

All-for-One’s Failed Body Replacement

I was slightly pleasantly surprised by My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 146. At the end of Episode 145, it sounded like Dabi was going to tell Shouto about his backstory we already saw. And the start of this episode seemed to be going in that direction.

However, that’s not actually what happened. There was a little recap of Dabi’s backstory. But it was only there to lead into the second phase of Dabi’s backstory. And this new phase didn’t feel like a retcon. Instead, it filled in the existing gaps.

It turns out that Dabi was originally meant to be one of All-for-One’s body replacements. For a while now, we’ve known that All-for-One’s plan is to transfer his consciousness into Shigaraki’s body. But what if Shigaraki didn’t work out? All-for-One would be out of luck — unless he had backups prepared.

Now, there’s still some information that we don’t know. For example, we don’t know if Shigaraki was always All-for-One’s first option. There may not have been a first option, and any of the replacement bodies would have been fine. We just happen to live in the Shigaraki timeline.

It’s also possible that Dabi was the one All-for-One wanted most. But I don’t see this being the case. It doesn’t look like All-for-One singled out Dabi. Instead, Dr. Garaki was the one who “recruited” Dabi into the program. What I think makes the most sense is that Dr. Garaki was trying to give All-for-One as many high-quality options as possible.

We also don’t know how many options there were. We saw at least 13 other kids in the facility where Dabi woke up after his surgery. I assume they were also all potential body replacements. But were they as high-quality as Shigaraki?

Dabi’s Flashfire Fist

Am I the only one who didn’t care about the fight between Shouto and Dabi? I’m so over all the drama within the Todoroki family. Endeavor’s cool because he’s strong. But I couldn’t really care less about the rest of them.

As soon as Dabi revealed his motivation for being a villain, I lost interest in him. I went over that in the previous episode review, so I won’t do it again. But I also kind of feel the same way about Shouto. Like Dabi, Shouto’s whole purpose is to show his father what he’s capable of.

That was fine back in Season 2 or whenever the sports festival at U.A. was. But we’re into the seventh season now. It’s time to move on. I don’t feel like Shouto has actually developed that much as a character since then.

Okay, he reconciled with his father and wants to be the one to stop his brother. That’s good, but is it enough? In terms of importance, Shouto is about on par with Bakugo. They’re both a step below Deku. However, I’d say Bakugo has had way better character development over the seasons.

So, going back to this fight between Shouto and Dabi, I didn’t care. These are pretty boring characters having a pretty boring fight. I mean, Dabi didn’t even come up with his attacks on his own. He literally just copied Endeavor’s signature move. And then Shouto just countered Dabi’s fire so it couldn’t hurt him.

I guess that’s all I can really expect from a fight between two characters with similar, generic abilities, though. And I don’t exactly have high hopes for the other fights in this arc. Shigaraki and All-for-One aren’t very interesting to watch fight either. Bring back Overhaul.

Is Dabi Finally Dead?

Did Shouto kill Dabi at the end of Episode 146? I certainly hope so. But I have a feeling that’s not the case. My Hero Academia isn’t a series that shies away from killing characters. Plenty of characters have died — just look at Star and Stripe earlier this season.

However, the vast majority of deaths in the series are villains killing heroes. Or, in some cases, villains killing other villains. It’s very rare for a hero to kill a villain. Off the top of my head, I can only think of this happening once: when Hawks killed Twice.

If you can think of another hero killing a villain (Nomu don’t count), let me know. I genuinely can’t think of it happening another time. And that’s why I can’t see Shouto having killed Dabi here. It would go against one of the main themes of the story.

This series is all about heroes saving people no matter what. The heroic thing to do is always to save someone, even if they’re a villain. Then, the police arrest the villains for whatever crimes they’ve committed. But, the point is that heroes aren’t the judge, jury, and executioner.

This is highlighted in two main cases. Deku wants to save Shigaraki despite everything he’s done, and Uraraka wants to save Himiko despite all the people she’s killed. Even Bakugo understands that heroes don’t kill. So, I can’t see Todoroki killing his own brother.

I’m not even sure if All-for-One will end up dying in this series. Sure, he’s the main bad guy. But, who’s going to be the one to ultimately take him down? My guess is Deku. Do you really think Deku is going to kill someone? Maybe Shigaraki will team up with Deku and finish All-for-One off.

Final Thoughts

What do you think of My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 146? Do you think Dabi would have been a better body replacement for All-for-One than Shigaraki? Did you care about the fight between Shouto and Dabi? And do you think Dabi is dead after Shouto’s final attack?
