Season Overview

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X (Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta… X / 乙女ゲームの破滅フラグしかない悪役令嬢に転生してしまった…X) is the second season of the My Next Life as a Villainess anime.

I wasn’t a fan of the first season of this series, and the same is true of the second season as well. A lot of people do seem to like this series, though. I don’t understand why, but to each their own, I guess.

Anyway, this season picks up after Catarina Claes cleared all of the death flags from the game in which she now lives. So, unlike in the first season, she doesn’t know what’s going to happen throughout this season.

What does that mean for the series, though? It means that the one thing that “set this series apart” from other generic isekai has been removed. Without Catarina attempting to dodge death flags, how is this any different from a normal, bland fantasy anime? The answer is that it’s not.

Instead of death flags, this season features multiple kidnappings. Towards the start of the season, Catarina gets kidnapped. And toward the end of the season, there are multiple episodes dedicated to Keith being kidnapped.

This season also revisits some things from the first season. For example, the episodes focused on Keith’s kidnapping also have to do with dark magic, which I feel was already done enough in the first season. It’s almost like having someone with dark magic show up is the go-to way to end a season.

And, in the very last episode of the season, Catarina and her friends graduate from school.

More of the Same Thing

Although there are no more death flags in this season, it’s still largely the same content, just more generic. All the other characters are still competing for Catarina’s attention, she’s still oblivious to the fact that they all love her, and the only thing she thinks about is still food.

From what I understand, it’s actually these characteristics of the series that fans like. So I guess actual fans of the series might have enjoyed this season more than the first. But, according to MyAnimeList, most people agree with me that this season is just worse.

There’s no character development going on at all. I don’t want to watch Catarina stuff her face and be socially oblivious for another season. It wasn’t interesting the first time around, and it’s still not interesting now.

Most series like this have some kind of development that makes them worth watching. It might be character development, plot development, continual world-building, etc. My Next Life as a Villainess X has none of that.

The first season did have a plot — to avoid all the death flags. Season 2 has no plot. Time passes within the season, but there’s nothing the season is working towards other than its own end. I’m guessing that some people are going to mistake the passage of time in the second season for plot development. They’re not the same thing.

“But the season is building toward Catarina’s graduation from school.” No. Time is passing and bringing her closer to graduation. Nothing that happens in the season has anything to do with making steps towards her graduation.

Because of this, the entire second season feels like filler. It might be based directly on content from the light novels. I don’t know. But I can tell you that it’s primarily just more of the characters acting in the same ways we’ve always seen them acting without any development.

It Just Keeps on Going

It would have been nice if the series ended upon Catarina’s graduation. That seems like a relatively good stopping point when you consider that she’s already cleared her death flags. But, that was unfortunately never going to be the case.

Throughout the season, it was mentioned multiple times that Catarina and Maria were planning to go to the Ministry of Magic, or whatever it’s called after graduation. So, based on that, we could assume that there was going to be another season.

And, as it turns out, that’s exactly what it seems is going to happen. I don’t think a third season has been officially announced yet. But at the end of this season, it was made abundantly clear that a third season is in the works in some capacity.

The good news is that the likely third season seems like it’s going to go back to the formula of the first season — at least to an extent. Apparently, there’s a sequel to the game Catarina was originally transported into, and it’s that sequel the third season is going to be based on.

That means the concept of death flags is probably going to make a return, which is a good thing. But, since Catarina never played this sequel before she was transported into the game world, she doesn’t know where the death flags are. That’s what seems to make the next season a bit different.

Personally, I don’t think the return of death flags is going to make the next season worth watching, though. I think I’m just going to skip it and drop the series with this season. I can’t see it improving enough for it to not be a waste of my time.

Conclusion

Overall, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X is a 4/10. It’s really just a worse version of the first season of the anime. If you liked that season, you might still like this one. If you didn’t, don’t bother watching this.
