That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Episode 29

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Episode 29

Prelude to the Disaster

Just as the title of this episode suggested, “nothing happened.” Obviously, things did happen, but none of the action happened. I thought for a moment that there was going to be some action involving the otherworlders. But then I remembered that this episode is all setup and quickly dispelled those silly thoughts.

But, something this episode made me think about is how the title of an episode can impact your enjoyment of it. If you download anime, you might not always see episode titles unless there’s an explicit title card. And even then, you may miss it. But for viewers who watch on streaming sites like Crunchyroll, which titles all the episodes, does the title influence you?

In most cases, I would say that it doesn’t. However, this one is a special case in which I would say that it does.

With a title like “Prelude to the Disaster,” I’m already being told that there’s not going to be any action in the episode. That also tells me that this episode is purely going to be setting up for what comes next. So already, I’ve lost some interest because I know there’s not a chance that something exciting will happen.

Meanwhile, the previous episode was titled “The Scheming Kingdom of Falmuth.” That title gave us an idea of what was going to happen within the episode, but it didn’t do so in what I would consider a “negative” way.

By this, I mean that the episode title is telling us what’s going to happen, not what’s not going to happen. It preserves the element of surprise to an extent. It tells us there’s going to be world-building, not that there isn’t going to be something else.

Humans Being Humans

Last week, I mentioned that of the three otherworlders, one of them seemed like he could be reasoned with. That no longer seems like the case. Maybe they will be reasoned with in the end. I don’t exactly see them being killed. But I do think having Rimuru have to contemplate killing them would be interesting for his character.

The reason I no longer see reasoning with the otherworlders as a possibility, and the issue I have with them as characters, is that they were depicted as simple, evil humans. They believe they’re entitled to better things than everyone else, they view everyone else as beneath them, and they attempt to start fights in town because that’s what evil humans do.

Basically, the majority of the depth their characters could have had was just wiped away. After seeing how they behaved in this episode, I’m fairly confident in saying that these characters aren’t going to be important.

Will they cause some problems in town in the short term? Sure. Are they going to be lasting threats? No. I really don’t see how that would be possible. If anything, they’ll eventually join Tempest — just like everyone does — and they’ll be relegated to being background characters who do nothing.

It’s also worth mentioning that this is how TenSura seems to treat a lot of its characters once their respective arcs are over. The dwarves don’t make many appearances, Gabiru has shown up maybe once this season, the orcs are out somewhere paving roads, etc.

At the same time, I’m not really sure what these otherworlders would contribute to Tempest anyway. I guess Kirara could use her ability for good instead of evil. But would she? And how often would it really be necessary?

Myulan’s Misunderstanding

To start off this section about Myulan, I just want to point out that the scene of her standing in an alley with her mouth open using the magic-canceling spell lasted over a minute. That was over 60 seconds of literally nothing happening. That scene could have been 5 seconds and we wouldn’t have lost anything.

But, I guess that’s what happens when you need to pad out the episode. It reminded me of the old One Piece episodes (and probably new ones still) that would show a character falling in slow motion for way too long for the same reason.

Anyway, this whole thing with Myulan is just a big misunderstanding. And while some people might like that, I find it to be pretty annoying in most cases. So, what misunderstanding is going on here?

The big misunderstanding Myulan has is that she believes the Demon Lord Clayman is more of a threat to Tempest — and Youm in particular — than he actually is. For this reason, she believes that she needs to follow Clayman’s orders if she wants to protect Youm from him.

Little does she know that Tempest is one of the strongest nations around at this point. Rimuru alone is about on par with a Demon Lord in terms of strength. Myulan also sees Clayman and Milim teaming up as a major issue. But she doesn’t realize that Rimuru and Milim are actually best friends and that Milim has spent time within Tempest.

But, I can’t really blame Myulan, or anyone else present, for this misunderstanding. Even if someone else told her all of this, why would Myulan believe them? Who would believe that a slime is on par with a Demon Lord and friends with the strongest Demon Lord? Really, it’s kind of Rimuru’s fault for always trying to downplay himself.

If Rimuru let the world know how strong he was, such as by taking credit for killing the Orc Lord, this wouldn’t be an issue. Sure, other countries would view him as more of a threat. But direct attacks from them are easier to plan for than someone like Myulan infiltrating the country.

  1. I just have to clear that misunderstanding: It is in NO WAY a misunderstanding on Myulan’s side, that Clayman (not carrion, he’s friendly) poses a threat right now. Don’t compare the Orc Lord with real DLs, he was more like an infant. Remember when Milim visited Tempest and Great Sage warned Rimuru about her being at least 10 times as strong and more likely much more? Well, that goes for most of the DLs. Clayman may be one of the weaker ones, but right now he still should be at least around 5 times as strong as Rimuru and has vastly greater troops. That also goes for some of the stronger nations by the way, even human ones, the western nations always speaking about fearing the eastern empire has a reason, for example…

    1. I barely remember anything that happened in season 1. They probably should have put the recap episode at the start of this season rather than the end of the first season.
