To Your Eternity Season 2 Episode 5

To Your Eternity Season 2 Episode 5

Bon-sama the Benevolent

The more time we spend with Bon-sama, the more I like him. To Your Eternity Season 2 Episode 5 showed us a new side of Bon we hadn’t seen before. Between this episode and Episode 4, he’s easily the most developed character of the season.

Last time, we learned about Bon’s past and his ability to talk to the dead. This time, we learned about his relationship with his men. I assumed Bon didn’t care much about people other than himself. He came across as someone who only tolerated others as long as they were praising him.

However, we now know that’s not the case. Bon cares deeply for all those who follow him. And he showed this multiple times throughout the episode. The first time came when he introduced the soldier Purkis to Fushi. Not only does he know Purkis’s name, but he had a prosthetic leg made for Purkis.

It’s not only Purkis whose name Bon knows. He seems to know the names of all his men. Dewey, Douglas, Micky, Corey, Tyrone, and Rolls are some of the men he names in this episode. And when Thomas gets trapped under some rubble, Bon personally runs over to him and calls out his name.

And guess what. It doesn’t stop there. After all his men are safe and accounted for, we see that Bon even knows their families. He may not be on a first-name basis with each of their family members. But, he recognizes them and cares about them.

Bon seems like he’ll be a good ruler if he survives long enough to become one. He’s great at PR, is loved by the people, cares about those below him, and has the ability and desire to lead. He’s a strange guy, but that’s okay.

Anna’s Reincarnation

The second phase of the episode is where things really start getting interesting. Fushi travels with Bon to the Uga Castle in Ilsarita where he meets Anna, the daughter of the castle lord. Anna is severely sick and on her deathbed when they arrive.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing Fushi can do for her at this point. It’s unlikely he would have been able to do anything for her even if she wasn’t about to die. But, because of her current state, he couldn’t even stay in the same room as her. He couldn’t bear feeling her die.

After Anna dies, the lord begs Fushi to bring his daughter back to life. But, we know this is beyond Fushi’s abilities. So, Bon has Fushi show the lord the extent of what he can do. He takes on Anna’s form and then steps out of her body to reveal an empty husk.

What comes next, however, is a huge twist. Bon suddenly starts looking around and comments that he can’t hear someone anymore. He doesn’t think much of it at the time. But, on his way out, Anna comes back to life. The implication here is that he couldn’t hear Anna’s ghost anymore.

Why did he stop hearing her voice? Because her soul entered the husk left behind by Fushi and reanimated it. This is a huge deal for a few reasons that Bon recognizes. First, he realizes this means Fushi could bring his dead friends back to life in the same way.

But, what I find to be more important is that he also recognizes the burden this will be on Fushi. He doesn’t explain why this knowledge would be a burden. However, I have a guess. Fushi will want to save everyone who died.

Followers of the Immortal

Think back to all the ways Fushi tried to stop people from dying. The biggest example is his exiling himself on an island for decades. He did that so the Nokkers would come to him rather than attack innocent civilians.

If Fushi learned he could bring people back to life, he’d want to save everyone who ever died “because of him.” He’d also want to save everyone who died in the future. That’s a huge burden for him to carry. But, I have a feeling he actually can’t do all that.

You see, over the past 2 episodes we’ve seen the ghosts of Fushi’s friends who follow him. Notably, there are only 5 of them. There’s March, Gugu, Tonari, Liggard, and Oniguma. So, my guess is that this means he’d only be able to reincarnate those 5.

Why wouldn’t he be able to reincarnate anyone as he did to Anna? Simply put, because their souls have already moved on. We don’t see Parona’s ghost following Fushi. So, we can assume that she already moved on to the afterlife. Even if Fushi creates a Parona husk, there’s no soul left to fill it.

Now, does that mean the followers whom he can reincarnate are effectively immortal? Could he keep creating new husks for them to fill every time they die? In theory, I guess the answer would have to be yes. But, we should consider why these 5, in particular, haven’t moved on.

My prediction is that they have unfinished business. So, if Fushi does reincarnate them, they won’t be around forever. They’ll do what they still have to do in the world of the living and then they’ll move on for good. Or, they could stick around as permanent characters.

Conclusion

What do you think of To Your Eternity Season 2 Episode 5? Is Bon the best character of the season? (The answer is yes.) How do you feel about Fushi being able to reincarnate people? Is that a good twist? And, do you think his ghost followers are going to stick around for good? Let me know in the comments.
