Tower of God Season 2 Episode 1 Review

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 1 Review

Tower of Mid, or Worse?

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 1 is bad. I’ll admit that I barely remember anything from Season 1, so I’m sure that’s not helping. But this is a bad episode anyway. And that’s part of the reason why I’m reviewing it today instead of One Piece Episode 1111.

Originally, I planned to review this episode today since it’s brand new. You know, to capitalize on the interest surrounding it. But after watching the episode, I’m reviewing it today to get it over with. I’d much rather write about One Piece, but I’m going to have to write about this eventually.

Okay, so I don’t have to write weekly reviews of Tower of God Season 2 episodes. However, it’s generally more fun for me to write about shounen battle series than romantic comedies. I get to discuss character abilities and theorize about matchups, which I like doing.

The problem is that I don’t know how much of that I’ll actually be able to do for this series. Just looking at this first episode, I feel like I don’t have much to talk about. And I have a feeling it’s not going to get better as the season progresses.

This episode throws us right into the middle of a new story. I don’t really understand what’s going on, but we have new characters and a new location. Unfortunately, both the characters and location are boring. The dialogue sucked, and most of the episode took place in a blank, white room.

What we do know is that the ponytail guy seems to be Bam, the protagonist of Season 1. Apparently, he’s trained up and joined a terrorist organization for some reason. And one of the new characters appears to be a prince of Jahad (the family of the king).

It Feels Like We’re Starting Over

With all the new characters, it feels like the show is starting over. Even Bam looks completely different now. Though, technically, we don’t know if the ponytail guy is Bam. But considering he saw flashbacks of Bam’s memories, it seems obvious.

So, how did we get here? We know that at the end of Season 1, Rachel tossed Bam into the abyss of the tower. He then ended up at the bottom and apparently received some special training. That’s basically it. We don’t know why he’s a terrorist now or what his current goal is.

Does he still want to help Rachel? Is he out for revenge? Why is he trying to eliminate the other people trying to pass the test on the 20th floor? We don’t know. And, this may come as a shock, but I don’t really care.

Let’s talk about some of the new characters. First up, there’s Wangnan Ja. We can be pretty sure that he’s a prince of Jahad because of the ring he wears. And not only that, but he seems to be the titular prince of Jahad.

You might not have known this because the English title doesn’t include it, but Season 2 has a subtitle: Ouji no Kikan (王子の帰還). That means “Return of the Prince.” So, it looks like Wangnan isn’t going to be some minor side character. Oh, and he’s featured in the cover art for this season alongside Bam.

The other two characters worth mentioning are Hon Akraptor and Horyang Kang. We didn’t get their names, so I looked them up. Hon is the spear guy, and Horyang is the punchy guy. Horyang’s ability seems pretty interesting. He gets special buffs depending on the glowing icon that appears next to him.

I Really Thought the First Season Was Good?

I looked back at my review of Season 1, and apparently, I gave it a 7/10. That seems pretty high. If I rewatched it, I have a feeling I’d lower the score. But since I’m not ever going to rewatch it, the score stands.

This got me thinking about what my expectations are for this season now that I’ve seen the first episode. If this season ends up getting a 6/10, I’ll be very impressed. If it gets a 5/10, I’ll be somewhat impressed. My prediction is that it will be a 4/10.

This first episode felt rushed. I have no idea what the pacing of the source material is like. But this felt like it was going through things pretty quickly. And this wouldn’t be the first time a Manhwa anime adaptation speedran its story.

For this season to be decent, it’s going to need to accomplish a few things. First, we need to learn about what Bam went through since we last saw him at the end of the previous season. Second, we need the events of this season to connect to the events of the previous season.

And third, and most importantly, we need some actually interesting stuff to happen within the tower. The first season was basically a giant tournament arc, which keeps things interesting. What will this season have? Another tournament arc? That’s what this episode seems to be setting up.

But rather than another tournament arc, I’d like to see the tower get explored more. Give me some Made in Abyss-level world-building and exploration content. I don’t see it happening, but that’s what this season really needs. The first two things I mentioned are the bare minimum that I hope it accomplishes.

Final Thoughts

What do you think about Tower of God Season 2 Episode 1? Do you remember much from the first season of the series? Do you like any of the new characters so far? And what are your predictions for this season? Do you think it will be better or worse than the first?
