Was This Season Better Than Season 1?

Yes, Urusei Yatsura (2022) Season 2 (うる星やつら第2期) was slightly better than Season 1. However, that was mainly thanks to the ending, which I’ll get to later on in this review. I wouldn’t say that the majority of the season was any better than Season 1.

For the most part, this season is a continuation of the first, which is to be expected. It’s a primarily episodic show. It’s not like there are going to be many major plot developments. But one thing this season does is add in a few new characters, which I liked.

The first important new character is Inaba. He works for the Fate Production Bureau, an interdimensional agency responsible for, you guessed it, fate production. While most of the employees are humanoid rabbits, Inaba is a human in a rabbit kigurumi. He also ends up in a relationship with Shinobu, Ataru’s original love interest.

The next important new character is Asuka Mizunokoji, the younger sister of Tobimaru Mizunokoji. Apparently, Tobimaru was in the first season. But Asuka is brand new. She’s afraid of men except for her brother (whom she loves) and Mendou (whom she believes is her brother).

Some of the gags featuring Asuka get a little stale, as is the case with the majority of character gags in Urusei Yatsura. However, I still like Asuka more than most other characters for one simple reason. Look into her eyes. There’s nothing going on in that head of hers.

The final two important new characters are Rupa and Carla. They’re only introduced in the final few episodes of the series. But what I like about them is how their relationship mimics Ataru and Lum’s. Carla is obsessed with Rupa despite him “loving” another woman, who happens to be Lum.

Ataru Grew as a Character?

The most surprising thing about this season was seeing Ataru grow as a character. That’s not something I ever expected to see. His personality doesn’t change all that much. But there are some subtle differences, especially when it comes to his relationship with Lum.

Obviously, Ataru still chases other girls whenever he gets the chance. That part of him isn’t ever going to change. However, he does so with a bit less conviction in this half of the series. He enjoys the chase but doesn’t seem to actually want to be with any of these other girls.

I remember one episode from the first season when he completely stood Lum up. She was waiting to go on a date with him, and he was chatting up girls in a restaurant instead. He knew she was waiting for him, and he didn’t care.

The Ataru of this season is far more considerate of Lum’s feelings. He intentionally flirts with other girls to make her mad less often. And he comes to her aid more frequently. There were multiple times when Ataru chased other guys away from Lum because “she’s his.”

That’s not something Ataru did very often in the first season. Back then, if anyone started showing interest in Lum, Ataru would generally push her off onto them so he could go flirt with other girls. This is one of the biggest changes in his personality.

I like this version of Ataru a lot more. He’s far more relatable now. He’s still a terrible person a lot of the time and primarily cares about himself. But at least he’s a more well-rounded character now. Chasing every girl in sight is no longer his entire personality. Though, I’m sure some people liked that.

The Ending Was Actually Very Good

The very ending of Season 2 is the best part of the whole series. It’s the culmination of Ataru’s character development. And it’s a very satisfying conclusion to the series for a few different reasons. Let’s go over it.

In the final arc of the series, Ataru and Lum get into a fight. Rupa kidnaps Lum and takes her as his wife. And because of Rupa’s tricks, Ataru believes that Lum chose Rupa over him. So, he turns his back on Lum and says that she doesn’t mean anything to him anymore.

Meanwhile, the world is getting destroyed by alien mushrooms. And the only person who can save it is Rupa. Lum says she’ll convince Rupa to save the Earth if Ataru says he loves her. And unsurprisingly, Ataru refuses. But Lum gives him one last chance. They’ll play a game of tag just as they did when they first met.

If Ataru can catch Lum, she’ll get Rupa to save the world. However, she says that the only way he’ll catch her is if he says the words she wants to hear. The fact that we’re going back to the game of tag that started the series is awesome.

As you might expect, Ataru isn’t having much success at catching Lum. And he’s also not caving in and saying he loves her. But his reason for not saying that is because he felt like she was the one who betrayed him first.

Ultimately, although Ataru never says the magic words, his actions demonstrate how he actually feels about Lum. He might not show his affection for her outwardly, but he cherishes Lum and everything she’s ever given him. And I thought the end of the series did a great job illustrating that.

Final Thoughts

In the end, I still gave Urusei Yatsura (2022) Season 2 a 5/10, which is the same rating I gave the first season. However, I think this season is slightly better, mainly because of the ending. It was nice to see Lum finally receive the affection from Ataru that she’s been seeking.
