My Hero Academia Episode 106

My Hero Academia Episode 106

Death by Hero

I guess I’m just losing interest in My Hero Academia because even though Season 5 Episode 106 actually had things happen in it, I didn’t really care. If there’s not a bunch of quirks I can theorize about or a giant fight, I get bored with this series.

I know that makes it seem like all I care about in anime are action scenes, but that’s not true. It’s just that the characters and plot of My Hero Academia are so boring that the only things there are to look forward to are the action scenes.

Unfortunately, even though this episode introduced a new quirk and had some action, it still wasn’t enough to keep me from being bored. Ending’s quirk that allows him to control the painted lines on roads isn’t that interesting — and what we saw was the boosted version.

I guess if his quirk is unboosted, Ending could only control one or two paint lines. That’s a pretty lame quirk considering how oddly specific it is. Yes, road paint lines are pretty common in urban environments. But if he can only control a few, he can’t truly take advantage of how many there are in a city.

The one thing that makes Ending somewhat interesting as a villain is that his goal is to be killed by Endeavor. Pro heroes never kill anyone, but that’s what Ending wants to provoke Endeavor into doing. But, I don’t think Ending’s reason for wanting to die by Endeavor is that good.

Basically, he just wants Endeavor to kill him because he wants to be killed by a hero as great as Endeavor. I would have liked it more if he had another goal, like trying to corrupt Endeavor’s image as the #1 hero by having him kill someone.

Hero Name: (Not) Bakugo

I remember that fairly early on in the series, there was a significant number of people who thought Bakugo might end up becoming a villain. At this point, it’s been obvious for a long time that he’s not going to do that. But I actually don’t remember if I ever thought that or not. Maybe I wrote about it in an old review.

I’m bringing this up, though, because I felt like this episode showcased the “best” of Bakugo as a hero so far. Yes, he’s still the angry and aggressive Bakugo we know, but both his actions and words made it clear that he takes being a hero very seriously.

During the exhibition match arc against Class 1-B, we got to see a side of Bakugo we hadn’t really seen before; we got to see him working together with others. His actions this week feel like they’re just as significant for his character as his actions back then were.

In the past, there are two things we might have expected Bakugo to do when faced with the Ending situation. Either he would ignore everything else and focus on taking down Ending, or he would attempt to do everything himself.

This time around, he did neither of those things. Bakugo focused on saving Natsuo and left Todoroki to take down Ending and Deku to save the other people who were in danger. That alone shows how much he’s grown — he trusts others.

After he saves Natsuo, he does ask if Todoroki and Deku did their jobs properly. But I don’t think he does this because he doubted them. He does this to make sure that the threat is gone and that everyone is safe. That’s pretty heroic of him.

Rebuilding a Family

Will the Todoroki family ever actually be rebuilt and be functional? I don’t know. That would certainly make for a happy ending for them. But I also don’t think that they necessarily need to have a happy ending. An average ending in which the status quo only slightly improves is fine too.

With that said, I think Toya is the key to it all. I can’t say much about Rei because her situation has a lot of unknowns. But for Natsuo, at least, if he can’t ever forgive his father for what happened to Toya, their family can never be whole again.

So, this got me thinking, “What would make Natsuo able to forgive Endeavor?” The answer that sticks out to me is if Toya isn’t actually dead. If Toya didn’t die due to Endeavor’s action or inaction, then Natsuo’s hatred for his father would be invalidated to an extent.

Perhaps you remember that when the villain Dabi was first introduced in the series, a lot of people thought he was a Todoroki because he has a fire-based quirk. Back then, I thought that was a dumb idea. Just because he has a fire-based quirk doesn’t mean he’s related to them — and his fire looks different anyway.

Now, I think it’s actually very possible that Dabi is Toya. I don’t have any direct evidence for this. But if we look at Dabi’s character design, I think we’ll see an important clue. Why is he all scarred and stitched up? That appearance has nothing to do with his quirk.

Once you realize that his appearance isn’t due to his quirk, it seems obvious that Dabi was in some sort of horrific accident. He also has the same color eyes as Endeavor. So my guess is that Toya didn’t die that day and was instead taken in by the League of Villains and now goes by the name Dabi.

Conclusion

What do you think of My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 106? Did you find Ending to be an interesting villain? Did you ever think Bakugo would turn to the dark side? And what are the chances that the Todoroki family are able to rebuild their bonds? Let me know in the comments.
