Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 5

Sun Breathing

Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 5 seems to have confirmed something I assumed back in my review of Episode 1. That something is that Sun Breathing is going to be Tanjirou’s sole breathing technique.

Obviously, Tanjirou started out learning the Water Breathing technique before awakening his Sun Breathing technique on his own. That initially made me believe that he was going to eventually master every breathing technique — or at least all the main ones.

However, in Episode 1, it was revealed that every other breathing technique is just a derivative of the original Sun Breathing technique. Upon learning that, I assumed it meant that Tanjirou would eventually focus solely on this technique rather than learning all of them. After all, if Tanjirou learned Lightning Breathing, what would be the point of Zenitsu?

Enough about Episode 1. How does Episode 5 confirm my assumption from back then? Well, Tanjirou states that he’s not good enough at Water Breathing, he’ll never be Hashira-level at it, and that his body is naturally suited to Sun Breathing. To me, this all means that he’s going to swap over to Sun Breathing entirely at some point.

Additionally, with the death of Rengoku, this is the first time that there hasn’t been a Flame Hashira. Sun Breathing seems pretty close to Flame Breathing. So I could see Tanjirou eventually making his way up to the level of Hashira and replacing Rengoku.

Rengoku didn’t have a successor, or Tsuguko, to replace him when he died. But he did ask Tanjirou to train under him.

However, Tanjirou is still a long way from becoming a Hashira. So I wonder if someone else will be promoted to fill the empty spot in the meantime. Or, maybe if there’s nobody qualified, the spot is simply left vacant.

Daki’s Ability (Part 2)

In last week’s review of Episode 4, I discussed what we knew of Daki’s ability at the time. Well, now we’ve learned a bit more about her ability. And this new information explains how she’s been able to control the entire red-light district on her own.

The big piece of new information we got is that Daki can split her personality among multiple “bodies.” There’s her main body, which Tanjirou is currently fighting. And then there’s at least one sub-body that takes the form of her obi.

It’s likely that she has multiple of these sub-bodies, with one in each brothel around the red-light district. And, these sub-bodies are able to think and act independently. It may even be better to view them as familiars rather than true pieces of Daki’s personality that have been split off.

In addition to learning that Daki is able to turn her obi into familiars, we also learned a bit more about how she devours her victims. I’m pretty sure she stated in the previous episode that they get devoured while trapped within her obi, but she didn’t really go into detail.

We now know that when someone becomes trapped within Daki’s obi, they’re effectively frozen in time. She saves them in this state until she needs to feed. And once it’s feeding time, I’m going to assume that’s when her victims are eaten from within the obi.

Also, considering the floor of her “nest” is littered with the bones of her victims, we can assume that the entire body isn’t dissolved. My best guess is that the flesh is dissolved and then the bones simply fall out of the obi once Daki’s done feeding.

Tengen’s Wives

All three of Tengen’s wives have now appeared in the anime, and I have some pretty strong opinions about them. So, I guess I’ll just go through each of them from best to worst. Also, keep in mind that my opinions are always objective facts.

Hinatsuru is easily the best of the three. She has the cutest design, has a normal and bearable personality so far, and seems to be the most competent. Unfortunately, it also seems like she’s going to have the least screen time of the trio, at least until she recovers from her injuries.

Makio comes in second. I don’t like her design nearly as much, she’s the angry one of the three, and other than that, her personality seems bland. Even in the flashback we got, Makio seems like a follower, not someone who would think for herself.

Suma is easily the worst of the three, but I know there are going to be a lot of people attempting to claim otherwise. They’re going to say that her scared personality is cute or something. Those people are wrong and we can all ignore them.

When I see Suma, all I see are the worst traits of both Inosuke and Zenitsu rolled into one character. She literally looks like Inosuke without his mask on (probably because the artist has a tough time drawing different faces). And as we all know, Zenitsu is unbearable enough. So why would I want another character who acts like him?

From what we’ve seen so far, Suma also doesn’t seem to be all that bright. Again, people are going to claim that makes her cute. While I would agree with that in some cases, this is not one of them. She’s the least visually pleasing, has the most annoying personality, and is also the dumbest of the group.

Conclusion

What do you think of Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Episode 5? Do you think Tanjirou will give up Water Breathing for Sun Breathing, or will he continue to use both? And, let me know how good or bad your tastes are by telling me which of Tengen’s wives is your favorite.

  1. The wives are pretty much counter parts to the boys.

Suma is Zenitsu, Makio is Inosuke, and Hinatsuru is Tanjiro. Though I personally actually like Suma the most of the three, despite Zenitsu being my least favorite of the other three.

    1. If Suma is the Zenitsu counterpart, why do she and Inosuke look exactly the same? I can’t wait for the reveal that they’re actually siblings.
