Why Is This Anime Rated So High?

BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! (バンドリ!It’s MyGO!!!!!) is an extremely overrated anime. MyAnimeList would have you believe it’s an 8.24/10. It’s more like a 2/10. And in this review, I’m going to explain why that is so you don’t get tricked into watching it.

Let’s get the high rating out of the way. Why is this anime rated so high? Well, it all has to do with the number of people who rated it. Only 6,000 people have watched and rated this series on MAL. Why does that matter, though?

Well, with so few people rating the series, that tells me these are diehard Bandori fans. The majority of people who watched It’s MYGO!!!!! have probably watched all the other seasons, too. So, that weeds out most people who would rate this series lower. Most viewers wouldn’t make it this far into the series, or wouldn’t start here.

Why is It’s MyGO!!!!! bad, though? Pretty much everything about it is the problem. There’s the CGI animation, the characters, the unnecessary drama, the dialogue, everything.

Let’s start with the animation. CGI is a divisive topic. I don’t like CGI animation in anime. But, that doesn’t stop me from watching a series. The CGI isn’t that bad in It’s MyGO!!!!! However, it would be better if it wasn’t CGI.

While watching this series, I couldn’t stop staring at the physics-defying hairstyles. I’m sure hair in most anime isn’t much better. But, in most anime, it doesn’t draw my attention to it. It was hard not to notice it here.

The characters, drama, and dialogue are what I want to focus on for the rest of this review. I don’t like to say that people are bad at their jobs. But, what were the writers of this series thinking?

Every Band Member Is Annoying

I guess before I get into the band members, I should mention their band name. For most of the series, they don’t have one. They then decide on Maigo Band before Anon changes it to It’s MyGO!!!!!, which is a terrible name.

Speaking of Anon Chihaya, she’s the protagonist of the series. Anon is an absolute narcissist who wants to be the lead singer and guitarist of the band. However, she can neither sing nor play the guitar. Of course, she lies and claims she can do those things and more.

Tomori Takamatsu is the actual singer and lyricist of the band. She collects rocks and animal bandaids, has very poor social skills, and can’t cope with change. Unfortunately, this leads to the other characters treating her like a child and speaking for her frequently.

Soyo Nagasaki is almost the worst. She’s a rich girl who attends a prestigious school, which is fine. But, she also uses the other members of the band for her own gain and doesn’t think twice about tossing them aside. Specifically, she doesn’t care about Anon or Raana at all and would prefer if they quit the band.

Raana Kaname is the “stray cat” of the band. She has no real connection to any of the others and comes and goes as she pleases. She’s almost incapable of speech, is food-motivated, and has zero self-awareness. Raana isn’t even invited to join the band — she just decides she’s a part of it.

Taki Shiina is, by far, the worst character. I swear that over 50% of her dialogue is an incredulous “Huh?” That seems to be her catchphrase and she says it so frequently that I felt like I was going insane. Who thought that was good dialogue?

Why Is Sakiko A Villain?

Maybe I don’t understand the Bandori series. That’s very possible considering this is the first season of it I’ve watched. But, why was Sakiko Togawa set up as the villain of the series if we were never going to find out anything about her?

In the very first episode, Sakiko quits the band CRYCHIC, causing it to fall apart. We later find out that she was the one who started the band. And, at the end of the series, she forms a new band, Ave Mujica, that seems to be the “antagonist” band.

Like, the whole reason she formed Ave Mujica was to get back at her former bandmates who are now in It’s MyGO!!!!! But, why? Why does she hate the other girls and want them to fail? She was the one who left CRYCHIC. She can’t leave the band then turn around and be mad at the other girls because she left.

We never get an answer to this. We also never find out why Mutsumi Wakaba, also a former member of CRYCHIC, joins Ave Mujica. Mutsumi said she never had fun in CRYCHIC. But, that doesn’t explain why she’s in Ave Mujica. And it doesn’t explain why Soyo blames everything on her.

I guess the next season is supposed to explain all of this. It follows Ave Mujica, so I would certainly hope it does. But, I don’t have high hopes. Nothing about Ave Mujica makes sense.

Like, consider the drummer of Ave Mujica, Nyamu Yuutenji. Sakiko specifically scouted her because she was a popular influencer. Sakiko wanted to use Nyamu’s existing audience to boost her new band. And yet, she forbids any of the band members from revealing their identities.

Doesn’t that completely invalidate the whole point of having Nyamu join the band?

Final Thoughts

As I said at the start of this review, I gave BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! a 2/10. I’m sorry Bandori fans, but this isn’t a good anime; it’s pretty terrible. If you want to watch good music anime, however, there are a lot of options. Bocchi the Rock! and Love Live! come to mind.

    1. The issue isn’t that there’s drama. I love drama anime. The issue is that that the drama isn’t good. Tomori’s the only one with any sort of compelling story, and that only comes in late in the series after her second band “breaks up.”

  1. I think that the show is definitely not for everyone, however this is not a well-written review imo.
It needs concrete examples that can back up your points, acknowledgement on the aspects it did well (or the potential if the execution is bad), and better focus on what you’re trying to express (what’s the point of bashing the band’s name?)
Then again, seems like you’re writing daily posts, so I can kinda see why.
Still, I think a well-written negative review doesn’t have to pander to fans, but it needs to have solid points even diehard fans can agree on, or understand where you’re coming from.
