Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 4 Review

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 4 Review

Dragon Slayer Rudeus

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation began with a red dragon hunt. Rudy teamed up with Stepped Leader to take on this quest. But, in the end, it was Rudy who took down the red dragon alone.

First, Rudy created a smokescreen so his allies could flee from the dragon. Next, he protected himself from the dragon’s fire by casting a water spell, resulting in a burst of steam. Then, he shot large projectiles at the dragon using earth magic. And, finally, he finished the dragon off once it got stuck in his quagmire.

This fight had some pretty cool animation. It reminded me a lot of the fight between Eris and the giant snake back in Season 1 Episode 11. Though, I think I prefer that fight over the dragon one we got in this episode.

It’s hard to say exactly how strong a red dragon is. But, in Episode 2, I theorized that Stepped Leader could be an S-ranked party. Or, at least, I’d say they’re A-ranked (which is the same as Dead End was). So, the fact that they had to retreat from the red dragon should mean it’s pretty strong.

Obviously, that also means Rudy’s pretty strong since he was able to defeat it on his own. Though, he did say that it was already half dead. I wonder what made him think that.

Anyway, we’ve known that Rudy’s strong for a while. So why am I bringing this up?

Well, Rudy got an invitation to attend the Ranoa University of Magic in this episode. And someone (I forget who) said that attending there will make him even stronger. So, my question is, how much stronger can Rudy become in terms of his magic?

Invitation to the Ranoa University of Magic

Let’s back up for a moment. Before Rudy received his invitation to the University of Magic, he met a certain someone. Elinalise Dragonroad, a former S-ranked adventurer, arrived in town looking for Rudy. And it was none other than Roxy who sent her.

In case you forgot, Roxy was traveling with Elinalise and Talhand. Talhand is the dwarf who was part of the same adventurer party as Elinalise, Paul, Zenith, and Geese. This trio was traveling together in search of Rudy and the rest of his family.

At some point, Zenith’s location was discovered. So, Roxy and Talhand went off to meet up with Paul and retrieve Zenith. Meanwhile, Elinalise went to find Rudy on her own. And, according to Elinalise, it didn’t take very long to find him. She expected that he’d be much farther away than he was.

While Rudy and Elinalise were staying in the north, the letter of invitation arrives. And, at first, Rudy doesn’t want to attend the University right now. Finding his missing family members is a higher priority to him. But, Elinalise believes he should go to the University instead.

On some level, it’s because she doesn’t want to see Paul again. We don’t know what happened between them. But, she’s in no rush to rejoin his group. However, that doesn’t appear to be all there is to it. She also understands that this is the perfect opportunity for Rudy to get even stronger.

And, it’s not just Elinalise who thinks Rudy should postpone reuniting with his family. The Man-God who visits Rudy in his dreams says the same thing. If Rudy doesn’t attend the University now, he’s going to regret it. My prediction is that’s because Sylphiette is also at the University right now.

Rudy’s New Traveling Partner

At the end of Episode 4, Rudy and Elinalise head out toward Ranoa. I don’t know how far away it is. But, I’m hoping we get at least one episode of these two traveling together before they arrive.

I know the next episode’s title is “Ranoa University of Magic.” But, that doesn’t actually tell us all that much. It could mean Rudy and Elinalise arrive there at the end of the episode. It could mean we explore the University through other characters before Rudy arrives. Or, it could mean the whole episode is about Rudy attending the University.

Of those three options, I’d prefer the first or second. The first would be my number one pick. As I said, I want to see more of Rudy and Elinalise traveling. Elinalise is a pretty mysterious character who I want to learn more about.

The second option would also be good though. I wouldn’t mind getting an understanding of the academy before Rudy shows up. It would give us an opportunity to learn about the other characters. Without Rudy there, they’d have more screen time. But, we might get the third option.

Anyway, back to Elinalise, why am I interested in her? Obviously, it’s because she appears to have a sex addiction. But, there seems to be more to it. She loses interest in Rudy once she sees he’s friends with another elf. That didn’t seem very in character for her.

Based on what we’ve seen of her, she’s not picky when it comes to the men she sleeps with. So, why did Rudy having an elf for a friend change things? Does that necklace symbolize that he’s another elf’s “property?” Are all elves like Elinalise? Will Sylphiette become like her, too?

Conclusion

What do you think of Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 4? Was Rudy’s fight against the red dragon your favorite of the series, so far? Are you looking forward to the University of Magic arc? And, why do you think Elinalise gave up on pursuing Rudy as a man? Let me know in the comments.
