Overview

Non Non Biyori is a slice of life anime which follows the daily lives of four girls, much like many other series in this genre such as Yuru Yuri, Lucky Star, Gabriel Dropout, etc. However, while these other series generally take place in either urban or suburban locations, Non Non Biyori takes place in rural Japan.

In fact, the town the girls live in is so rural that their school only has five students spread between first through ninth grade. The fact that the girls live in the country is something they struggle with daily, always dreaming of what it must be like to live in a city like Tokyo.

As with most slice of life series, the characters are the primary focus, so we’ll just move onto that section now.

Characters

Renge Miyauchi is the youngest character in the series and youngest of the Miyauchi sisters. She’s in first grade and is really the main reason anyone should watch this anime. She likes to play her recorder, take care of the school’s rabbits, and do anything else she feels like doing.

While the older girls want to know what it’s like to live in a big city, Renge seems to be in denial about living in the country. She often asks the other girls if they live in the country, and points out things around them as potential proof that they do, in fact, live in the country.

The next youngest girl is Hotaru Ichijō, a fifth grade transfer student from Tokyo. Despite only being in fifth grade, Hotaru is the most physically developed of the students which is often used in contrast with one of the older girls, Komari.

Since she’s from the city, Hotaru has a distinctly more fashionable sense of style than her peers. She also has a crush on her upperclassman, Komari, and even has a collection of stuffed Komari dolls.

Natsumi Koshigaya is the seventh grade student and youngest of the Koshigaya siblings. She’s a tomboy who tends to get into trouble with both her teacher and her mother due to her performance in school. It seems that Renge is conflicted about whether or not Natsumi is a girl.

Komari Koshigaya is in eighth grade and is both the older sister of Natsumi as well as the middle Koshigaya sibling. Despite being the oldest of the four main characters, she’s the second shortest (Renge is shorter).

As the oldest of the four girls, she tries to appear mature and often attempts to show off her mature tastes in things such as music or fashion. However, she doesn’t have mature tastes and is usually overshadowed by Hotaru.

The oldest student in the school is Suguru Koshigaya, the eldest Koshigaya sibling. He’s also the only recurring male character, but doesn’t have any dialogue. He appears to be an otaku, but that’s really all we know about him.

Hikage Miyauchi is the next oldest character and is the middle Miyauchi sibling. She goes to high school in the nearby city, and although it isn’t as modern as Tokyo, it’s definitely a step up from the town the rest of the cast lives in.

After Hikage there’s Konomi Fujimiya, a high school student who goes to school nearby. She lives next door to the Koshigaya’s and that’s all the necessary information about her.

Kaede Kagayama is the second oldest of the recurring characters and runs the local candy store. Because of this, she’s referred to as “candy store” by the girls instead of by her actual name. She used to babysit Renge when she was younger.

The oldest character is Kazuho Miyauchi, the older sister of Renge and Hikage. Kazuho is the only teacher at the local school, but since each of the students is in a different grade and so work separately, she doesn’t really need to teach. Instead, she takes naps while the students work.

Conclusion

The first season of Non Non Biyori was a 6/10 and although I won’t be watching the second season for some time, I don’t really expect it to be rated any higher. Like most slice of life series, there isn’t too much going on and so it really depends on having good characters.

Unfortunately, I really care for most of the characters and found the series lacking in the comedy it needed in order to be considered good. Renge, Hotaru, and Kaede were my favorite characters, but I found Natsumi and Komari to be a bit annoying.

If slice of life anime are for you, then you’d probably enjoy this one. If not, then you aren’t really missing out by skipping it.

My review of the second season is available here.

Overview

The collection known as the Monogatari Series Second Season officially includes Nekomonogatari White through Koimonogatari. However, since we went over Nekomonogatari White with Nekomonogatari Black that one will be excluded from this post.

Another thing to note is that while Hanamonogatari is considered part of the second season, it is not a part of this collective and so will have its own post next time I do a Monogatari series review.

This means that in this post we’ll be taking a look at Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari, and Koimonogatari which each only have one arc.

Kabukimonogatari

Kabukimonogatari includes the arc Mayoi Jiangshi in which Koyomi and Shinobu travel back in time and end up saving Mayoi Hachikuji from being killed by a truck 11 years before the start of the series.

While this originally seems like a good thing, it turns out that changing the past isn’t something you should do. Who could have guessed?

Because of their decision to save Mayoi, the current world is now overrun by vampires due to the vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade (Shinobu). As it turns out, Mayoi is a pretty important character as an apparition so her removal changes the whole story.

One day Shinobu went missing and it was none other than Mayoi who first realized she was gone. Because of this, Koyomi was able to find Shinobu in time before she decided to destroy the world and make everyone into vampires.

Without Mayoi as an apparition, however, the world is dying, zombie-like vampires are everywhere, and Koyomi and Shinobu seemingly have no way to return to their normal timeline. However, a hero appears: Mayoi.

Mayoi, now an adult, has managed to survive the apocalypse and carries a message for Koyomi explaining to him how to get back to his own timeline. All he has to do is defeat the vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade.

However, Koyomi never actually defeats her, and instead, she allows him and Shinobu to use her power to return to their own timeline. This is the first time we see the vampire Kiss-Shot recognize Koyomi’s relationship with her.

Otorimonogatari

The arc for Otorimonogatari is the Nadeko Medusa arc. As I mentioned in my review of Bakemonogatari, I actually like Nadeko’s character development over the course of this series despite most people finding her boring.

While in Nadeko Snake she was simply a boring girl in love, in Nadeko Medusa she becomes a yandere goddess.

Basically, in this arc, Nadeko believes she is making amends for killing a bunch of snakes to rid herself of the charm that was cast on her originally by finding the body of a snake god. However, what she really ends up doing is releasing the snake god which had been sealed away.

Nadeko’s body is then used by the apparition and she herself essentially becomes the goddess of the snake shrine and her hair turns into a bunch of snakes. When she’s confronted by Koyomi and Shinobu, she defeats them and plans to kill them because she’s jealous of their relationship, however, Senjougahara intervenes.

It’s then agreed that Nadeko will allow Koyomi and Senjougahara to graduate from high school before killing them both.

Onimonogatari

Onimonogatari includes the arc Shinobu Time which is about what happens when apparitions stop behaving as they should. In this arc, we are introduced to a black hole-like entity which, as it turns out, is a force that corrects the natural order of the world by destroying apparitions that no longer comply.

However, it doesn’t just destroy apparitions, but any living thing in its path. After seeing the entity, Shinobu recognizes it as something she saw 400 years earlier when she first came to Japan.

At this time, She was being revered as a goddess rather than feared as a vampire which is why the black hole appeared. In the end, it went away after Shinobu returned to being a vampire after all of the citizens who worshiped her were killed by it.

This time around, however, Shinobu is not the apparition who has strayed from her path; it’s Mayoi.

As you may recall from the Mayoi Snail arc of Bakemonogatari, Mayoi became a lost cow apparition who leads people astray due to her never making it to her mother’s house before she died. However, at the end of that arc, she made it to her destination and therefore is no longer lost.

Further, since that point, she has no longer led anyone astray which means she isn’t fulfilling her duty as a lost cow apparition.

In the end, Mayoi decides that the only way to save everyone else is for her to disappear. Rather than being destroyed by the black hole, however, she chooses to pass on to the afterlife and thereby cease being an apparition wandering the Earth.

Basically, this arc is why we can’t have nice things. Mayoi becomes a dependable character who we’re used to seeing around, and then the next thing you know she has to disappear forever otherwise everyone else will die.

Koimonogatari

The arc for Koimonogatari is Hitagi End. Despite the names of the arcs not matching up, Hitagi end is actually the continuation of the Nadeko Medusa arc in the same way that the Shinobu Time arc was the continuation of Mayoi Jiangshi.

This arc takes place after Senjougahara convinces Nadeko to wait until after graduation to kill Koyomi, Shinobu, and Senjougahara herself.

Senjougahara contacts best girl Kaiki and hires him to work his magic as a con man and deceive Nadeko into believing that both Koyomi and Senjougahara died in an accident. In the end, Nadeko sees right through Kaiki, but as a master con man, he has a backup plan.

During the Nadeko Snake arc from Bakemonogatari, you may recall there was a closet in Nadeko’s room which she refuses to let Koyomi look inside. It turns out that inside the closet is a bunch of manga that Nadeko drew and doesn’t want anyone to know about.

Kaiki learns of this and uses it to his advantage by telling Nadeko that if she doesn’t return home and stop being a goddess, her parents will eventually open her closet and discover her secret of wanting to be a manga artist.

While most of us realize that her parents discovering she wanted to be a manga artist isn’t really a big deal (especially since she’s a goddess now), we have to remember that Nadeko is still only about 14 years old. And, like many children, she doesn’t quite understand the severity of various things.

In her mind, having her parents, or anyone for that matter, see the manga she drew is so embarrassing that she would rather give up being a goddess than allow that to happen. It’s kind of like how the girls in Mitsuboshi Colors see a dog getting loose in school as a more important case than murder.

Due to the end of this arc, I think many people still believe that Nadeko is a boring character, but I don’t see her that way even once she goes back to being a normal girl. Instead, I see a character who’s actually believable.

The priorities of teenagers don’t make sense; they think being embarrassed is the end of the world. Nadeko acts her age and that’s exactly why I like her as a character.

Conclusion

Overall the Monogatari Series Second Season is a 10/10 even if I include Nekomonogatari White into it. The arcs are mostly about Mayoi and Nadeko, two characters who I love and so why wouldn’t it be perfect?

The Mayoi arcs “hit me right in the feels” as the kids would say and the Nadeko arcs were just enjoyable to watch because of yandere snake goddess Nadeko.

Next time I write about the Monogatari series we’ll be looking at Hanamonogatari which will probably be shorter because it only has one arc.

Love Live! School Idol Project

Overview

Love Live! School Idol Project is an anime about, you guessed it, school idols. The anime follows nine girls who make up the school idol group known as μ’s (Muse).

μ’s was formed in order to make the high school the girls attend more popular. In recent years, there have been fewer new students applying to the school and it’s in danger of shutting down entirely. A school idol group is one way the girls think of attracting new students because they’re the new big thing for any popular school to have.

One of the most popular schools in the area has its own idol group known as A-RISE which is the most popular one in the country. While μ’s wish they could be like A-RISE, it doesn’t seem like they will be making it to that level of fame any time soon.

However, a special event is announced called the Love Live!

In this event, school idol groups from around the country have the chance to qualify to perform in a live competition to decide which group is the best. Only the most popular groups are invited to the event and so μ’s must work even harder than they ever have to earn a spot.

Characters

μ’s is made up of nine members, with three coming from each year in the school. The first years are Rin, Hanayo, and Maki, the second years are Honoka, Umi, and Kotori, and the third years are Eli, Nozomi, and Nico.

Rin Hoshizora is an athletic tomboy. She joined μ’s because her best friend Hanayo was afraid to join by herself. Rin tends to annoy me because she often tries to “talk like a cat” if that makes sense.

Hanayo Koizumi is probably my least favorite character. As mentioned just above, she’s best friends with Rin who was the one who pushed her to join the School Idol Club. Hanayo is completely obsessed with idols which is part of why I don’t like her, but the main reason is that her voice sounds like one continuous voice crack.

Maki Nishikino is the best of the first-year members; she’s the most normal. Maki’s the tsundere of the group in that she tends to appear annoyed with the other members constantly even though she actually likes them deep down. Her job in the group is to compose the songs.

Honoka Kousaka is the main protagonist of the series and one of the founding members of μ’s along with Umi and Kotori. Rin is a very energetic girl who tends to overreact about everything. She reminds me a lot of Akko from Little Witch Academia.

Umi Sonoda is one of Honoka’s two best friends. She’s the dependable, hard-working one of the second years and so is the one who comes up with practice schedules for the group. She’s also in charge of writing the lyrics for the songs.

Kotori Minami is the other best friend of Honoka and Umi. While she’s more dependable than Honoka, she isn’t quite as uptight as Umi. Kotori wants to be a fashion designer and so she designs and creates the costumes for the girls to wear during their performances.

Eli Ayase is the first of the third-year members and the president of the student council. She used to be a ballet dancer and so she trains the rest of the girls in choreography.

Nozomi Tojo is the vice-president of the student council. She tends to guide Eli by getting her to admit her true feelings about things. Nozomi also frequently uses tarot cards to predict things.

Nico Yazawa is the final member of μ’s. She’s the president of the Idol Research Club, which she is now the sole member of, and has been obsessed with becoming an idol for years. She tends to take being an idol way too far with her persona involving her “Nico Nico Ni” catchphrase pictured below.

Conclusion

Back when I reviewed Fuuka I made a statement about not understanding the appeal of anime about music because you could just watch a better anime that also happens to have a good soundtrack. Love Live!, however, has changed my mind about the genre.

I ended up enjoying the first season much more than I originally thought I was going to, and in the end, I’ll give season one a 7/10. It’s not as good as I was told (so far), but it was still good. There will be another post specifically for season two coming in the near future.

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya Poster

Overview

There are currently four seasons of Prisma Illya out; however, this review will only be covering the first one. The next two seasons, 2wei! and 2wei Herz!, will be covered together and 3rei!! will be covered on its own.

Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya is the magical girl entry of the Fate series. It’s also the best entry of the series and features my favorite character, Illya as the protagonist. Although the genre of this entry is different from the others, it still has many similarities with the rest of the entries such as characters and the classes of heroic spirits.

However, in Prisma Illya, there is no Holy Grail War in the same sense as in the other entries. Further, heroic spirits are not summoned and contracted to a mage in the same way either. Instead, there are cards that have the essence of a heroic spirit in them which can be used to gain the noble phantasm of that spirit.

Prisma Illya also introduces the Kaleidosticks, Ruby and Sapphire, which make contracts with girls and are then used to turn them into magical girls. With the help of the Kaleidosticks, the magical girls must collect all of the heroic spirit class cards by defeating the spirits who are summoned by them.

Characters

Illyasviel von Einzbern, or Illya for short, is the protagonist and titular character of the series. You may remember her as the daughter of Irisviel and Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero and the master of the Berserker class servant from Fate/UBW. She is also the younger sister of Shirou Emiya from UBW as well.

Illya was a normal elementary school girl until she was tricked into forming a contract with the Kaleidoscope Ruby. She often wishes she could go back to her regular, peaceful life before she became a magical girl.

Miyu is the other magical girl in the series and has a contract with the Kaleidostick Sapphire, Ruby’s sister. While Illya is very dramatic and overreacts to everything, Miyu tends to show little emotion and thinks things through rationally.

While she is the same age as Illya, her background is unknown. After becoming a magical girl she is taken in by Luvia who builds a mansion across the street from Illya’s house.

Rin and Luvia are the original owners of the Kaleidosticks which are now contracted to Illya and Miyu. Due to their constant arguing, the Kaleidosticks broke off their contracts with the pair of older girls as a way to rebel against them.

Rin, as you might remember from UBW, is a classmate of Shirou Emiya, Illya’s older brother. Luvia is another one of their classmates and the rival of Rin. Together, Rin and Luvia work as the mentors for the new magical girls and use them to collect the class cards which was originally their task.

Conclusion

Although I prefer Prisma Illya over UBW and Zero, I still ended up giving the first season a 7/10 as I did for those series. While it is better than those, it’s not better enough to warrant scoring it any higher.

If you’re a fan of the magical girl genre, I highly recommend Prisma Illya. It’s more of an action-based magical girl series since it’s still part of the overall Fate series, but it also makes jokes about many of the magical girl tropes found in other series.

Little Witch Academia (Movies)

Little Witch Academia (Movies)

Little Witch Academia Movie Cover Art

Overview

Little Witch Academia is a Trigger original anime series that started out as two movies. The movies were released in 2013 and 2015, but the series did not air until 2017.

As is suggested by the title of this post, I will only be covering the two movies here, although there will most likely be a fair amount of crossover with the eventual post about the series. I currently have the series on hold, only making it through 3/25 episodes.

While these first two entries into the Little Witch Academia world are considered movies, I would only really classify the second one as a movie. The first one, titled Little Witch Academia, is only 26 minutes long and is more like a first episode of a series than a movie.

The second movie, Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade, is 53 minutes long and so on par with the standard for animated movies. This movie also is not simply the first episode, but actually goes on to have a real movie-like plot.

While I do think Trigger is a generally good studio, the thing they have going for them most, in my opinion, is their art style. For me, the art style of Little Witch Academia was the best part of these movies which could be viewed as either a good or a bad thing. I see it as a bad thing.

If you’re making a movie, of course, you want it to look nice, but you probably want the plot to be the major focus as that’s what keeps the viewer’s attention the most. These movies, while they looked very colorful, had bland writing.

Characters

Since this post is solely about the two movies, I’ll only go over the three main characters here and save the rest for a future post about the series.

The protagonist of Little Witch Academia is Akko. She’s a new witch who doesn’t come from a magical family. Her inspiration for wanting to become a witch was a stage-performing witch by the name of Shiny Chariot (almost typed Silver Chariot from JoJo’s).

Lotte is one of Akko’s two friends and roommates at school. She’s the quieter, bookworm type of character who gets dragged into trouble by her roommates, usually Akko. Lotte is also decent at magic, unlike Akko who has no experience.

Sucy is the other friend and roommate. Like Lotte, Sucy has experience with magic, but her real expertise comes in the form of potions. Sucy is always making new concoctions and then testing them out on the unsuspecting Akko.

Akko Kagari

Conclusion

As I mentioned before, these movies were a bit bland and so I ended up giving them both a 5/10. If not for Trigger’s art style, however, they would have been down at 4.

Despite my criticisms of these movies, there are a lot of people who enjoyed them and then enjoyed the series even more. I think if things such as Harry Potter are what you’re interested in then these movies may be good for you, but I haven’t really been into that stuff for a long time now.

If these movies had come out 10 years earlier, I’m sure my feelings towards them would have been much different.
