Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 2

Deep Floor Monsters

As far as I’m aware, Bell has come into contact with 2 types of monsters from the deep floors of the dungeon. The first was the golem monster from DanMachi IV Part 1. And the second is the sheep monster in Part 2 Episode 2.

I don’t remember what the sheep monster’s called. But, its name doesn’t matter. What matters is how much stronger it is than the monsters of the upper floors. Though, you could be forgiven for not thinking it’s that much stronger than what Bell has faced before.

When Bell fights (and defeats) the sheep monster, he’s severely injured. So, if an injured Bell can defeat it, it can’t be that dangerous, right? Well, no. We have to keep in mind that Bell is a pretty strong adventurer at this point thanks to his special skill.

Bell piercing a monster’s gem with his knife

Also, without Ryuu’s knowledge, the fight could have ended very differently. Bell wasn’t aware that the monster had camouflage. So, for any adventurer entering the deep floors, that alone could be fatal. I don’t remember any of the upper-floor monsters being able to hide their locations like that.

In a lot of ways, the sheep monster is the same as the Juggernaut spawned by the dungeon. Doesn’t that have camouflage, too? It’s also fast and strong. The only difference is that the sheep monsters aren’t immune to magic damage. Oh, and you can kill them by stabbing them in the eye.

Speaking of the Juggernaut, we actually still don’t know how to defeat it. The last time it appeared, it seems to have disappeared on its own after almost everyone was dead. It could be that it goes away once the dungeon “heals.” Or it may disappear after enough bloodshed.

Floor Boss Phase 2

At the end of the previous episode, I assumed the floor boss fight was almost over. Clearly, I don’t play enough RPGs. Bell’s party did not, in fact, defeat the floor boss. They defeated one phase of the boss battle. And in the second phase, it summoned some friends.

Now, it doesn’t seem like phase 2 of the floor boss battle is that different from phase 1. The extra fish monsters didn’t pose much of a threat. Well, unless you fall into the water. But, I mean, who would do that? Certainly not Mikoto.

When I say this phase isn’t much different from the first, that’s not good for our heroes. They only beat the first phase thanks to Mikoto’s gravity magic. Well, that combined with the debris it caused to fall from the ceiling onto the boss. And the problem is that it doesn’t seem like she can do it again.

Mikoto drowning

Even if Mikoto could use her gravity magic again, I have a feeling she won’t. Why? Because she disappeared into the depths of the lake. The floor boss created a wave that knocked her into the water. And then the fish monsters grabbed her and dragged her down.

With that said, I don’t believe Mikoto is going to die. She’s one of the main characters. I can’t see any members of the Hestia Familia dying. Other supporting characters are fair game. But Hestia Familia members? I’ll be shocked if any of them die.

So, how is Mikoto going to survive? Can she hold her breath for a long time? Is she going to grow gills? Or, is a certain mermaid Xenos going to come to her rescue? My money’s on the latter. I don’t remember her name, but mermaid girl is coming back.

5 Minutes to Rest

At the end of the episode, Ryuu tells Bell that he has 5 minutes to get some sleep. After that point, they’ll likely need to start moving again. And, the implication was that while it’s Bell’s turn to rest this time, Ryuu will rest next time.

However, I’m not sure that’s the case. At first, I thought maybe Ryuu was tricking Bell into sleeping longer than 5 minutes. After all, once he’s asleep, she can let him continue to sleep. If she told him to sleep for an extended period of time from the start, I doubt he would listen.

But, I don’t know if I still think that’s what’s going on here. Ryuu actually seemed like she was going to hold out for 5 minutes while he slept. So, what she told him about only having a few minutes may be true. She’s the deep floor expert.

Ryuu injured from the anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 2
Ryuu injured

Going back to what I said about no Hestia Familia members dying, Ryuu isn’t a familia member. That doesn’t mean I think she’s going to die, though. I don’t know what’s going to happen to her. But, if she does end up dying, her death could be impactful for Bell.

Why would Ryuu get killed off, though? If she’s an important character, wouldn’t it be better to keep her around? Is it worth killing her just so Bell can have a bit of character growth? If Ryuu’s story is over, then yes, it could be.

Remember, this whole arc is about Ryuu returning to the scene of her familia’s massacre. It’s about her getting revenge for her dead comrades. Once she’s done that, what is there left for her to do? She could join the Hestia Familia or she could die. Those are her main options.

Conclusion

What do you think about Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 2? Do you think Bell could have defeated the sheep monster without Ryuu? How do you expect Mikoto to survive? And, do you think Ryuu is going to die at the end of the arc? Let me know in the comments.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 1

Floor Boss Amphisbaena

The last time I did an episode review for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? was back in 2020 during Season 3. I didn’t have very high expectations for Season 4, so I skipped reviewing the episodes for Part 1.

But, I actually enjoyed Season 4 Part 1 more than I anticipated. It went back to the stuff I like about DanMachi, the dungeon exploration. So, since the first part of the season was good, I figured I’d pick up the second part for my weekly reviews.

Now, Season 4 Part 2 Episode 1 picks up right where Part 1 Episode 11 left off. Bell and Ryuu fell down into the lower floors with the Juggernaut. And the rest of Bell’s party comes face-to-face with the boss of Floor 27, Amphisbaena.

Bell’s party preparing to fight Amphisbaena

Amphisbaena wasn’t supposed to respawn for another 2 weeks. But, it seems like the rules of the dungeon are more like suggestions. Well, I’m sure there’s a reason for the floor boss respawning early. However, we don’t know what that reason is right now. It could have to do with the Juggernaut spawning. Or, it could be unrelated.

Why the floor boss spawned isn’t important right now, though. What’s more important is that it traps Bell’s party by blocking the exits. And, to be fair, this makes sense from an RPG perspective. If you’ve ever played an RPG, you’ll know that once you enter a boss’ room, you usually have to beat the boss to leave.

As for the boss itself, Amphisbaena is a giant, aquatic, two-headed dragon. One head breathes blue flames that can burn through steel. And the other head breathes a red mist that dissipates magic. It’s certainly a dangerous boss.

Mikoto’s Gravity Magic

By the end of the episode, it looks like Bell’s party is about to defeat the floor boss. And the reason they’re able to get this far is thanks to Mikoto’s gravity magic. Did she always have this? I don’t remember it being a thing before.

So, here’s the thing, gravity magic is extremely powerful. It’s no time magic, but it’s up there. So, the fact that this is something Mikoto can use whenever she wants is a big deal. Well, I’m sure she can’t use it often because of how much mana it uses.

Now, I don’t want to say that gravity magic on its own means defeating the floor boss is simple. If Mikoto used it without there being a plan in place, she would have wasted it. But, when used as part of a plan it does make the fight a bit trivial.

Mikoto using gravity magic on the floor boss from the anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 1
Mikoto using gravity magic on the floor boss

My suspicion is that we’re going to see Mikoto use this magic again this season. Specifically, she’s going to use it against the Juggernaut. We’ve established that she can use gravity magic against strong enemies here. So, the next step is for her to use it in a higher-stakes situation.

The thing that makes the Juggernaut so dangerous is its speed. But, if Mikoto can use her magic on it, she can slow it down or even stop it in its tracks. Then, her allies can hit it with everything they’ve got.

I’m assuming that Bell and Ryuu won’t be able to defeat the Juggernaut on their own. They’re severely injured. So, that’s why I’m thinking the rest of Bell’s party will have to come to their rescue. And that’s when Mikoto will have the opportunity to use her gravity magic again.

Time to Drop Cassandra

Let’s talk about Cassandra, one of the healers of the party. The other healer is Haruhime, by the way. Now, while Cassandra’s primary role is that of a healer, that’s not her only ability. She also has future sight in the form of her dreams.

Unfortunately, Cassandra is unable to make full use of her future sight abilities. Why? Because she believes people won’t take her seriously. And, in her defense, she’s right to believe that. Even her best friend, Daphne, doesn’t believe Cassandra’s dreams of the future are real.

But, that’s the smallest problem Cassandra has. A bigger problem is that she’s too timid when it comes to telling people about her dreams. If she stood firm and insisted that her dreams of the future were real, more people would believe her. The real issue is that Cassandra backs down as soon as she gets pushback.

Daphne beating some sense into Cassandra from the anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV Part 2 Episode 1
Daphne beating some sense into Cassandra

The biggest problem with Cassandra, though, is that she’s a coward. As a healer, she plays a vital role in her party. And yet, she wasn’t helping for the majority of the fight against the floor boss. By the time she healed her allies, the fight was pretty much over.

Honestly, if I was one of Cassandra’s party members, I’d drop her from the party after this. It doesn’t matter that she finally did her job in the end. By that point, it’s too late. Her fate with my party has already been decided.

I don’t care that the reason for her inaction was her fear. It doesn’t matter that she believed they were all going to die anyway. What matters is that her allies were fighting, and she gave up. It’s just too bad we won’t see her get dropped from the party here.

Conclusion

What do you think of DanMachi IV Part 2 Episode 1? Why do you think the floor boss spawned early? Do you remember Mikoto having gravity magic before? And would you kick Cassandra out of your party? Let me know in the comments.

Season Overview

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV (Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka IV: Shin Shou – Meikyuu-hen / ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうかⅣ 新章 迷宮篇) is a really long title. It’s also the fourth season of the DanMachi series. So, I’ll be calling it DanMachi IV.

This season of the series is a bit different from the previous 3 seasons because it doesn’t cover an entire arc. Season 1 was the introduction to the series. Season 2 was the Ishtar Familia arc. And Season 3 was the Xenos arc. This season begins the Labyrinth arc but doesn’t finish it.

In a way, the fact that the season doesn’t conclude the arc it begins is annoying. But, I’m willing to look past that because I think this is the best season so far. And part of why it’s a good season might actually be because it’s not a self-contained arc.

The Labyrinth expedition party

So, what’s this arc about? Calling it the Labyrinth arc isn’t very descriptive. After all, the entire series revolves around the Labyrinth, right? Well, that’s the title that the series itself gives the arc. The subtitle of this season is Shin Shou – Meikyuu-hen (新章 迷宮篇), which translates to “New Chapter – Labyrinth.”

You may have guessed this already, but most of this arc takes place within the Labyrinth. And, it takes place on deeper floors of the Labyrinth than we’ve previously been to. But, that’s not all. The arc also introduces monsters far more powerful than those we’ve seen before.

You could say that the goal of this season was to show how dangerous the Labyrinth really is. We’ve seen adventurers get injured and even die in the Labyrinth before. However, DanMachi IV takes turns this up a notch.

Marie is the New Wiene

Do you remember Wiene from DanMachi III? She was the blue Wyvern Xenos Bell befriended and protected in the Labyrinth. Well, DanMachi IV has a new and improved version of Wiene, Marie. Marie is a Mermaid Xenos Bell meets deeper in the Labyrinth.

The neat thing about Marie is that she’s better than Wiene in every way, but fulfills the same role. She’s the season’s (now seemingly obligatory) Xenos girl. Marie is cuter and less annoying than Wiene, which already makes her better. But, I also like how her character was used within the arc more, as well.

One of the big problems I had with Wiene was that she was an escort mission character. Throughout Season 3, Bell had to escort, protect, and save Wiene. That doesn’t make her a very interesting character. She was also a major focus of the arc, despite being boring.

Marie and Bell from the anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV
Marie and Bell

Marie isn’t a helpless Xenos like Wiene. That’s not to say she’s a combatant — she’s not. But she’s always in need of saving. Instead, it’s actually Marie who saves Bell on multiple occasions in this season. And by setting up Marie’s abilities early on, the season was able to dodge an instance of Deus ex machina at the end.

You see, when Marie’s introduced, we learn that Mermaid blood has healing properties. She has Bell drink some of her blood, and it heals his wounds after a battle. With that established, it doesn’t feel out of place when she does it again at a crucial moment later on.

And, another nice thing about Marie is that she’s not a major focus of the arc. She’s a recurring side character who doesn’t overstay her welcome. Marie didn’t get enough screen time to become annoying, which is key.

The New Arc the Series Needed

So far, the Labyrinth Arc is the most brutal arc of the DanMachi series. And that’s saying something, considering the Xenos arc was about slavery and genocide. Those topics may be darker. But, this season is all about revenge — two sides trying to get revenge on each other.

Something brought up in a previous season was that Ryuu Lion’s familia got wiped out. She was a member of the Astraea Familia, which had a rivalry with the Rudra Familia. This rivalry resulted in the Rudra Familia laying a trap for the Astraea Familia in the dungeon.

The Rudra Familia intended to cause a cave-in to trap and kill members of the Astraea Familia. However, because of the damage done to the Labyrinth, a terrifying monster spawned. This monster killed every member of the Astraea Familia other than Ryuu, who escaped. It also killed many members of the Rudra Familia.

Ryuu Lion from the anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV
Ryuu Lion

After that catastrophe, Ryuu made it her mission to get revenge on the Rudra Familia members. And, to her credit, she did exactly that. She single-handedly slaughtered them all over the years. Well, all except for one, Jura.

So, DanMachi IV focuses on the battle between Ryuu and Jura. They both want to kill each other, and their revenge takes them deep within the Labyrinth. And their thirst for revenge results in the deaths of many other adventurers. Neither cares about the number of innocents injured or killed as long as they come out on top.

To me, this is exactly the kind of arc DanMachi needed right now. It shifted the focus of the series back to the Labyrinth. It takes place deep within the Labyrinth. And it’s not a simple good vs. evil plot like we had with the Xenos arc.

Conclusion

In the end, I gave DanMachi IV a 7/10. That makes it tied with Season 1 as the highest-rated season of the series. It’s definitely better than Seasons 2 & 3. And I’m looking forward to seeing how the Labyrinth arc continues in the next season, whenever we get that.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

Season Overview

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III (Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka III / ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうかIII), or simply DanMachi III, is the third season of DanMachi. This season takes place within the city of Orario once again, which I wasn’t expecting.

I remember the end of DanMachi II involving someone leaving Orario and maybe even Bell chasing after them. So with that in mind, I figured that this season would follow that and take place elsewhere in the world. That’s not what happened though, so maybe I just misremembered the ending of season 2.

What DanMachi III is actually about are sentient monsters, known as Xenos, that have begun appearing within the dungeon. While the Xenos have human-like intelligence and emotions, their external appearance means that they will never be accepted on the surface. But at the same time, they have no place within the dungeon either.

Monsters don’t recognize the Xenos as their kin. Adventurers slay the Xenos as if they were normal monsters. And there are even hunters who capture the Xenos and sell them on the black market.

One of my main concerns with this season’s premise was how the Xenos would affect the future of the series if they were accepted in the end. After all, how could adventurers continue to slay monsters in the dungeon while knowing that those monsters might not be so different from themselves?

I’m not going to spoil how the season ends. But I will say that throughout the season, it does attempt to address this concern a few times — not that I found those attempts very convincing.

New Characters (Xenos)

Of all the Xenos who were introduced into the series, five of them stand out as being the most important. These are Wiene, Lyd, Ray, Gros, and Asterius.

Wiene is the most important Xenos as well as the first one we’re introduced to. She’s a vouivre, which is basically a wyvern, or dragon-kin. I’m not sure if this is the case for all vouivre, but Wiene only has a single wing. Wiene is important to the story because she’s the first of the Xenos to befriend Bell and the Hestia Familia.

Wiene from the anime series DanMachi III
Wiene

Lyd is the leader of the Xenos group that lives within the dungeon. He’s a Lizardman who’s proficient at fighting with human weapons. That weapon proficiency isn’t unique to Lyd, but not all of the Xenos are so quick to adopt human customs such as weapon carrying. Of all the Xenos, Lyd is the one who most wants to be able to live alongside humans.

Ray is the most minor of these five Xenos. She’s a siren, which is basically the same as a harpy as far as fantasy series are concerned despite their mythological origins being different. She works as the second in command of the Xenos behind Lyd.

Gros, a gargoyle, is the leader of the anti-human faction within the Xenos group. He doesn’t believe that Xenos and humans will ever be able to get along and instead calls for the Xenos to fight rather than attempt to make peace. Gros also notably doesn’t use human weapons in combat.

Lastly, we have the minotaur Asterius. According to Lyd, Asterius is the strongest of the Xenos, and this checks out based on what we see of him. Not only does Asterius wield human weapons, but he also uses a magic weapon at one point, making him the only Xenos to do so.

Comparison to Previous Seasons

My rating of DanMachi III is in a bit of an awkward place in relation to the previous two seasons. I think it’s definitely better than DanMachi II. However, I don’t actually remember the original season of DanMachi all that much. And by “all that much” I mean at all. I couldn’t really tell you what happened in season 1 at this point.

In my defense, I reviewed DanMachi almost three years ago, and it’s been even longer since I actually watched it. And over the years, I’ve watched and written about hundreds of other anime. So things get a bit hazy after a while.

However, that haziness has caused a problem. While I rated DanMachi III above DanMachi II, I rated it below DanMachi despite it probably being better. Why did I do this? Because I gave DanMachi a 7, and I don’t really think DanMachi III is 7 material. However, I’m not going to lower my score of DanMachi unless I rewatch it, which is unlikely to happen.

Bell and Lyd shaking hands from the anime series DanMachi III
Bell and Lyd shaking hands

Basically, what I mean to say is that DanMachi III is probably the best season of DanMachi despite what the ratings at the end of my DanMachi season reviews may imply. But why is that the case? What does DanMachi III do that the previous seasons don’t?

To answer that, let’s take a look at DanMachi II. The second season covered two arcs, only one of which I usually remember. The first arc was that forgettable tournament arc against a god who I don’t remember. Me forgetting that arc isn’t because I’ve watched a lot of anime since it like with season 1. It’s because it’s a forgettable arc.

The second arc was the Ishtar Familia arc. While I wouldn’t call this one forgettable, I wouldn’t call it good either. I remember wishing it would just end so we could go back to the dungeon the whole time.

DanMachi III solves both problems I have with DanMachi II. It focuses on just one arc that I don’t see myself forgetting in the near future. And it actually takes place within the dungeon, which I think is one of the primary draws of this series for a lot of people. Orario isn’t that exciting of a setting — the dungeon is.

Also, DanMachi III had some very good action and animation at the end. I don’t remember DanMachi II having much of that.

Conclusion

Overall, I think Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III is a 6/10 It’s probably a high 6, but I wouldn’t put it in 7 territory. And as I mentioned, if I rewatched season 1 today, I probably wouldn’t have that as a 7 either.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III Episode 12

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III Episode 12

Argonaut | Hero’s Return

DanMachi III episode 12 was by far the best episode of the entire DanMachi season. Sure, there’s probably some recency bias in that statement, but I do believe it to be true. This episode was a very strong end to what I would consider a pretty good season overall.

I think my only real complaint about this episode is that Hermes turning “evil” for a single episode didn’t really make all that much sense. I guess it fits into Hermes’ lore in that he’s mischievous. But was it really necessary for him to betray Bell and the Xenos at the very end like that?

It’s suddenly revealed that he hates the Xenos because they’re monsters. But at the same time, he doesn’t hate them enough to kill them. He just needs a few to sacrifice themselves to make Bell look like a hero and then he lets the rest go.

Bell protecting Eina from Gros from the anime series DanMachi III
Bell protecting Eina from Gros

Hermes’ intervention was like a reverse Deus ex machina. Rather than a god suddenly appearing to save the day, a god suddenly appeared to add in some last-minute conflict. However, I can’t complain about it too much because the conflict it gave us resulted in some of the best fights of the season.

Although it was overshadowed by the Asterius fight later in the episode, Bell’s fight against Gros was good too. I know, I had just been complaining about the lack of on-screen fights as recently as last week. What I liked about the Gros fight was how it showed Gros’ character development.

Normally, you’d think that Lyd would be the one to sacrifice himself and bet on Bell to come through for the other Xenos. But instead, it was Gros — who was originally the leader of the anti-human faction.

Fate of the Xenos

Something you may not have noticed is that by the end of the episode, not much had actually changed since the start of the season. Some adventurers and gods now know about the Xenos, but that’s it. The Xenos still aren’t accepted by the wider population, and most people don’t realize they’re any different from standard monsters.

The Xenos are even back living within the dungeon. And all of their wounds have been healed — including Asterius’ missing arm. So while there were some Xenos who died throughout the season, the majority of them are in the same state they were when the season began.

Also, let’s not forget that they have Fels with them. With Fels on their side, there’s basically nothing they have to worry about. He’s immortal and able to use the most powerful healing magic in existence. Theoretically, he could just revive all of their dead comrades unless too much time has passed since their deaths.

Asterius from the anime series DanMachi III
Asterius

Earlier in the season, I questioned how the existence and acceptance of the Xenos would change the series. If the Xenos are accepted by the adventurers and people of Orario, then that would put all monsters within the dungeon in a grey area. Should they really be killed considering they have the capability to become sentient?

The Xenos themselves told Bell not to hold back when fighting non-Xenos monsters. But I think that advice was mainly meant in the context of if Bell was being attacked. I don’t think the Xenos would really approve of adventurers continuing to kill monsters for sport as they do now.

But in the end, none of that matters because the Xenos aren’t accepted by adventurers and the general population. Once again, nothing really changed over the course of this season.

Bell Versus Asterius

Bell’s fight against Asterius was clearly the best-animated part of the entire season and probably the entire series. However, it wasn’t only a great fight because of the animation quality. There are some other aspects that went into making this fight as good as it was.

First is the history between these two. Ever since Asterius’ introduction, it’s been pretty clear that he and Bell had a history. After all, the series opens with Bell being attacked by a minotaur in the dungeon. I don’t remember if Asterius is that original minotaur, but at the very least we saw a flashback of the two of them fighting at some point in the past.

Why does that matter? Because it has to do with the origin of the Xenos. The Xenos aren’t inherently different from other monsters within the dungeon. The only difference is that something caused them to “awaken” from their dream-like state. Asterius remembering his fight against Bell is proof of this.

Bell vs. Asterius from the anime series DanMachi III
Bell vs. Asterius

It also seems like this fight is important to Asterius because he wants to somehow prove to himself that he has control over his body now. He wasn’t the one really fighting in his previous battle against Bell. That was his monster instincts controlling him. This time he wants to fight Bell as a Xenos.

The second thing that I think made this fight so good was that it really put Asterius’ strength on full display. This has to do with the animation to an extent, but also the art and the way scenes were laid out. Everything about this fight showed how much physically stronger Asterius is than Bell.

In most fights against large monsters, I don’t think this is effectively conveyed. Asterius is just a giant mass of muscle and I love how that was clear to see.

Conclusion

What do you think of DanMachi III episode 12? Was it really the best episode of the series? Or am I forgetting a better one? Do you think the ending with the Xenos going back to hiding within the dungeon was a good conclusion? And what do you think of the fight against Asterius? Let me know in the comments.
