Boruto Episode 160

Boruto Episode 160

To the Land of Silence

There’s not all that much I want to discuss as far as the events of this episode go. Overall, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episode 160 was pretty boring. But, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing I want to discuss. This week, I’m going to focus on the connections this episode has to the greater Naruto world.

So let’s start off with one big difference between the Land of Silence and the Five Great Nations. While the Land of Silence does have shinobi of their own, they don’t have a hidden village. This likely isn’t because they’re a small nation — other small nations have hidden villages — but rather because it’s effectively a lawless nation.

This also means that the shinobi of this country operate differently from their hidden village counterparts. Rather than receiving missions from a central location, they pledge their services to the highest payer. They’re basically bounty hunters.

My guess is that the lack of a hidden village also means the shinobi of the Land of Silence don’t have a special headband as most shinobi do. Even the shinobi of the Land of Sound have a unique headband they wear to signify their allegiance.

But, that’s not to say there aren’t shinobi headbands in the country. As Boruto and Sarada learn, rogue shinobi who end up in the Land of Silence often sell their headbands. Thanks to this, one shopkeeper is selling headbands from the Hidden Sound, Sand, Mist, Rain, and Stone villages.

And although we don’t see any, we can assume he has Hidden Cloud headbands too, since he claims to have them from all of the Five Great Nations.

I’d also assume that some of those headbands weren’t sold by their owners, but were picked up off slain shinobi.

Kirisaki

Kirisaki is a former medical ninja from the Land of Mist who’s found himself in the Bingo Book — which means there’s a warrant out for his capture (or killing). We don’t know what he did to end up in the Bingo Book. All we know is that he caused an “incident” with his “suspicious” medical ninjutsu.

Although he seems to be out of the arc already, I’m hoping he makes a return so we can find out what’s so suspicious about his medical ninjutsu. Is it really any more suspicious than that of Dr. Yubina?

I’m going to assume his ninjutsu is water-style-based because he hails from the Land of Mist, but that’s nothing strange as far as medical ninjutsu goes. And unfortunately, we don’t know much about what medical shinobi in the Hidden Mist Village would specialize in.

Speaking of Kirisaki’s connection to the Land of Mist, this is something we may have been able to predict even if it wasn’t stated by Mugino. Kirisaki’s white hair is actually somewhat common among people from that region — most notably, Suigetsu.

While white hair isn’t as common as brown hair in the Lands of Earth and Wind, black hair in the Land of Stone, or blond hair in the Land of Lightning, it still seems to be more common there than elsewhere.

There’s also the more definitive fact that his name has “Kiri (霧)” in it, which means fog or mist. It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that someone named Kirisaki comes from Kirigakure, just like how Konohamaru comes from Konohagakure.

Also, since his name has “mist” in it, I’m guessing he’s able to heal people by turning his body into mist and using it somehow. Just as Suigetsu can turn his body into water.

Hinode Bridge

Hinode Bridge is pretty cool because it looks exactly like Tenchi Bridge located near the Hidden Grass Village from Naruto: Shippūden episode 39. Tenchi Bridge is the location at which Naruto, Sakura, Sai, and Yamato attempted to capture Orochimaru by pretending to be the then-deceased Sasori.

And what’s really neat about this scene on the Hinode Bridge is that it’s effectively the same event happening. Boruto and the gang are pretending to be Kirisaki so they can meet with whoever hired him on the bridge.

As far as I can tell, this entire scene was meant to be a reference to that episode that aired almost 13 years ago. If there’s one thing I like in Boruto, it’s when it indirectly references the older parts of the series.

Another interesting fact about the Hinode Bridge is that hinode (日の出) means sunrise. I don’t think that fact is going to be significant in any way later in this arc, but the time Kirisaki was supposed to meet his employer on the bridge was 6:00 AM — which is right around when the sun is likely to rise.

At most, I think in the next episode we might get to see that there’s a nice view of the sunrise from the bridge. Perhaps this will be shown after Boruto and the gang successfully treat the man who met them on the bridge. As I said, I don’t see the name of the bridge as being that important, but generally, things are named for a reason.

The Tenchi Bridge I mentioned earlier translates to Heaven and Earth Bridge. And if I’m remembering correctly, it was named as such because it symbolized the peace that was achieved and the connections that were forged after one of the Great Shinobi Wars.

Conclusion

What did you think of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations episode 160? Do you think the shinobi of the Land of Silence are going to have a unique headband to designate their allegiance? If so, what do you think their symbol will be? And how do you think Boruto and the gang will save the man on the bridge? I’m guessing they’ll take him back to Dr. Yubina.
