Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 240

Ikada’s Dream

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 240 wasn’t on Crunchyroll when I went to watch it this morning. Luckily, I saw that it was up on 9anime, so I watched it there instead. I’m not really sure what went wrong over at Crunchyroll. But I’m also not surprised they would have issues.

Anyway, this episode is all about Ikada and his dream. Ikada dreams of one day building a giant ship and using it to sail around the world. He wants to meet all kinds of people on this trip and make friends.

While that dream isn’t as good as wanting to become king of the pirates, it’s still a good dream. I think it’s fitting for Ikada because it combines his passion for shipbuilding and his outgoing and friendly personality.

One thing about Ikada’s dream that I did find a bit odd was that we first hear about it from Boruto. Unless Ikada mentioned it in a previous episode and I missed it, the first time Ikada’s dream is explained is when Boruto brings it up in a question.

What’s weird about this is that Boruto doesn’t ask what Ikada’s dream is or what he plans to do in the future. Boruto asks a leading question about becoming a shipbuilder, building a large ship, and traveling around the world.

This is an awkward way to introduce Ikada’s dream because it leaves the viewer feeling like they missed something. When did Boruto learn this? Is this just a guess and Ikada is going to shoot it down? If Boruto already knows that much, why is he asking Ikada about it now?

It would have been far more natural for Boruto to ask a more general question that would prompt Ikada to be the one to reveal this information.

Ikada Funato

To the surprise of no one, it was officially revealed that Ikada is a member of the Funato clan. However, he left the clan to follow his dream of working on ships. He didn’t originally intend to become a shipbuilder, but he knew that he wanted to work on or around ships since he grew up with them.

And, as he explains to Boruto, he also left home simply because he wanted to get away. Ikada doesn’t have anything in common with his family and the pirate lifestyle just isn’t for him.

It was also confirmed that Ikada is, in fact, the boy with the webbed hands whom Boruto swore he saw. Again, that should have come as a surprise to no one. However, I have to admit that I was wrong about the reality of Boruto being saved.

Based on all the information we had at our disposal, the logical conclusion was that Boruto didn’t fall overboard. His clothes were dry. Ikada’s clothes were dry. There was no indication that either of them had been in the ocean mere minutes before they met on the deck of the ship.

Because of this, I assumed that what Boruto saw was a hallucinated vision of the future. I figured that he hadn’t been saved by Ikada, but that he would be saved by him later in the arc. That assumption turned out to be incorrect.

Despite what logic would have you believe, Boruto did fall overboard and get saved by Ikada. I don’t really like this revelation — and not because it means I was wrong. I just think it would have been more interesting if this was used as foreshadowing. This was an anticlimactic end to the mystery.

Seiren Funato

Just last week in my review of Episode 239, I said that I doubted we’d get the name of the female member of the Funato clan any time soon. Well, once again, I was wrong. The female Funato clan member’s name was revealed to be Seiren.

With that in mind, let’s quickly go over what we know about the Funato clan. Araumi is the leader. As far as we know, he has 4 children. These are Isari, Tenma, Seiren, and Ikada. We know Isari is the eldest son, followed by Tenma. And Ikada is obviously the youngest.

What we don’t know is exactly where Seiren falls. She’s older than Ikada. But where does she fall compared to Isari and Tenma? Is she the oldest? Is she between them? Is she younger than them? We don’t know. However, I’m going to assume for now that Seiren is the third child.

Ikada also told Boruto that Seiren is the only member of his family who encouraged him to go off on his own. I’m thinking that means her relationship with Ikada is going to be similar to Reiju’s relationship with Sanji in One Piece.

By that, I mean that Seiren wants Ikada to be able to live the life he wants without having to put their clan first. But, at the same time, Seiren is devoted to their father and clan. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Seiren tells Ikada to run away so that he isn’t dragged into the conflict. She probably won’t actively work against the Funato clan, though.

I’m also really hoping that we get to see Seiren use some jutsu so we can learn more about the Funato clan. However, and I might be wrong about this come next week, I don’t feel like she’s going to end up fighting anyone just yet.

Conclusion
