Goblin Slayer II Episode 2 Review

Wizard Boy’s First Quest

Goblin Slayer II Episode 2 covers Wizard Boy’s first quest. A rookie adventurer is someone in their first year of adventuring. But, Wizard Boy is even less experienced than that. Until now, he’s never gone on a single quest.

But, he’s in luck. For his first quest, he gets to tag along with a pretty experienced party. Normally, new adventurers form parties with similarly ranked adventurers. All the members of the party may be Porcelain-ranked. Or, there might be an Obsidian-ranked adventurer or two mixed in. But, partying up with Silver-ranked adventurers isn’t normal.

What about Priestess, though? As a Porcelain-ranked adventurer, she was partying up with Silver-ranked adventurers. But, the difference is that her current party wasn’t her original party. Her original party was made up of all Porcelain-ranked adventurers. She only joined Goblin Slayer after he saved her.

Now, based on how Episode 1 ended, I made some assumptions about Wizard Boy’s first quest. I thought he and Priestess were going to go on a quest alone. Or, that they’d party up with some other random Porcelain/Obsidian-ranked adventurers. However, as we learned, that wasn’t the case.

It’s also a good thing that wasn’t the case because Wizard Boy would have died. He made many of the mistakes you’d expect rookie adventurers to make. And if he wasn’t with Goblin Slayer’s party, that would have cost him his life. It could have even cost the lives of the rest of his party.

Unfortunately, Wizard Boy didn’t have to deal with the consequences of his actions. Even though he made every mistake in the book, the rest of the party was able to bail him out. And in the end, he managed to help save the Acolyte despite his poor choices.

Party Leader Priestess

In case you forgot, one of the major goals of this quest was for Priestess to prove she’s not getting carried. She wants to rank up from Obsidian to Steel. But, the adventurer’s guild isn’t convinced that she’s actually earned it. After all, her other party members are all Silver-ranked.

So, Female Knight suggests that Priestess and Wizard Boy go on a quest together. This would give Priestess an opportunity to lead a party and prove herself. And it would give Wizard Boy an opportunity to see what quests are actually like.

I assumed that these two would be going on a quest alone. Or, that they would party up with some other Porcelain/Obsidian-ranked adventurers. But, that’s not what happened. They partied up with the rest of Goblin Slayer’s party. And in doing so, kind of circumvented the purpose of the quest.

If Goblin Slayer, High Elf Archer, Dwarf Shaman, and Lizard Priest are there, what’s the point? It won’t give Wizard Boy the learning experience he needs, as I’ve already covered. And, it won’t give Priestess the opportunity to prove that she’s not being carried. Those suspected of carrying her are still there to carry her.

It doesn’t really matter that Priestess is the one calling the shots instead of Goblin Slayer. Sure, she’s taking on more responsibility as the party leader this time around. But, does that actually make any difference? Her Silver-ranked party members already know what to do and have the skills to do it.

Even if Goblin Slayer hadn’t taken over as party leader, I can’t say Priestess should rank up due to this quest. However, this could be the start of a new role for Priestess moving forward. Perhaps she’ll take on more party leader responsibilities in the future.

Wizard and Wizard Boy

There were a few twists at the end of Episode 2, with the first being that Wizard Boy had an older sister. The second twist is that Goblins killed his older sister, which explains why he hates them so much. And the third twist is that we know who she was.

Wizard Boy’s older sister is none other than Wizard, Priestess’s former party member. Earlier, I mentioned how Priestess’s original party was all Porcelain-ranked adventurers. Well, Wizard was one of them. She and Warrior both died, while Priestess and Fighter made it out alive.

After that failed quest, Fighter retired from being an adventurer. And, of course, we know the path Priestess chose. But, it doesn’t seem like Wizard Boy knows who Priestess is. He doesn’t realize she was there when his sister died. But, she recognizes who his sister is after he describes how she died.

What’s a little confusing to me is how Wizard Boy ended up so different from Goblin Slayer. They both have similar backstories. The difference is that Wizard was an adventurer and Goblin Slayer’s sister wasn’t. But, in both cases, the women were killed by goblins and their younger brothers want revenge.

However, that experience made Goblin Slayer aware of how dangerous goblins can be. That’s not the case for Wizard Boy. Despite what happened to his sister, he still severely underestimates goblins. And that’s the part I don’t understand. Is it because he’s never seen a goblin before? Goblin Slayer saw what the goblins did to his sister.

Even if that’s why Wizard Boy doesn’t see goblins as a big deal, I still don’t get it. He clearly respected his older sister. So, why does he think they’re weak if they killed her? Doesn’t he think she was strong?

Final Thoughts

What do you think of Goblin Slayer II Episode 2? Were you expecting Wizard Boy’s first quest to fail? Do you think Priestess still got carried even as the party leader? And, do you think she’ll ever tell Wizard Boy that she was there when his sister died? Let me know in the comments.

  1. So I can help make sense of your questions regarding wizard boy(WB)and his different response compared to goblin slayer(GS).

For starters, GS watched it happen. He had to sit in that wall and watch, silently lest he also be killed, as the goblins do what goblins do best(or I guess worse). WB learned of this second hand. He doesn’t know the entire story all he heard was that his sister was killed by goblins. It’s a different way to experience similar events, and thus reactions to these events will be different. Not to mention it’s clear that WB still had connections with other people, even if those connections were bad. GS basically spent 5 years after the event in secluded training with a crazy and harsh mentor. Obviously they both come out of that differently.

As for the reason why WB still doesn’t see goblins as a threat, it’s explained by how others still view goblins around him. Most everyone still views goblins as low tier threats. Even if reports of adventures being killed by them surface, they are usually easily dismissed out of hand because it’s usually rookies who are the ones being killed. And WB was being humiliated because everyone was basically laughing at how his sister died to lowly goblins. So he has translated that into a desire to kill them but he is fueled by both hatred from the goblins and for those who laugh and mock him. He is inexperienced, rash, and a hothead. Someone who probably would think with their emotions first. This is vastly different from GS who, while yes also being motivated by revenge, has buried his emotions and approaches the task with his full power.

It’s what leads to my favorite scene when GS breaks down emotionally when he hears who WB sister is, and the implications of what GS did. He didn’t just mercy kill some random adventurer, he killed someone’s older sister and that has led this boy on a similar if much more dead end path. And considering GS history, that hits way to close to home and shows a vulnerability you rarely get from him.
